1  eHam Forums / APRS / RE: Writing APRS App for iPhone on: January 07, 2010, 04:38:28 PM
I've got the droid.  I just need the time!
The iPhone app is leaking memory and crashing on one type of message.   Working hard on those bugs right now.

well good news!   My APRS was approved by apple and is now available on the app store!   The name is, surprise, APRS.  I will say that it does crash once in a while and very randomly and only seems to do it if I scroll and zoom at the same time.   I think it's a google map bug myself, but I'll keep working on it!

I've got a droid phone coming in a week so maybe if there is enough interest I'll port the app to Android too.

hmmm I thought I posted this already but I guess not.

The latest screenshot of my app is here:

I hope to get it submitted to the app store within the next week or so.   It takes another week or two to get approved.

Hey Everyone,

I'm probably biting off more than I can chew but in the past couple of days I started writing an APRS app for the iPhone.  Right now I can connect to an APRS-IS server, filter it, eat the feed and display icons on a google map.   I'm pretty pleased with it so far but there is a LOT of work to do!

I'd be interested in hearing the features that you think are needed and "must have" for an iPhone APRS app!

Cheers,

Gary H.

Perserverence, thats what it takes!
I still don't think my audio levels are perfect, I'm not decoding nearly the amount of traffic I think I should be but it does work Smiley

Thx all!

moderators please delete this second post.
I got a mysql error the first (and second) time I tried posting and I didn't think it succeeded.

I'm about to give up on ever getting getting packet/aprs working under linux.   I've tried FC10 and 11, and ubuntu 9 (and possibly 8 too).   I've tried using a dell D600 and D400 laptops as well as virtual machines running under VMWare Fusion (Mac).

I believe my problem is with soundmodem.  I've tried source as well as packages (all the ax25 stuff loads fine with no indications of problems).   I can run soundmodemconfig  and create a configuration/channel (typically I use /dev/dsp, /dev/soundmodem0, and KISS).    I can start the diags and watch my radio input on the o-scope, the levels look fine (maybe 75% total deflection? no clipping) and I see the APRS data.  Not only that, I DO see the DCD light up when I see the data.

What I *never* see however, is any decoded data in the modem window after testing for hours.   Despite that failure, I'd soldier on and try running xastir.  And again after hours of running, it would see no data on the interface.

Before I give up and just buy a TNC, I just want to hear is that someone can confirm they actually can run soundmodem/APRS on FC10, FC11, or Ubuntu.   Besides that I would greatly appreciate any tips and suggestions.

Direct replies are fine too gary.huntress@gmail.com

Cheers,

10  eHam Forums / Digital / Fedora and Soundmodem - DCD But No Data? on: December 26, 2008, 01:45:12 PM
I'm still having some beginner issues with soundmodem.  For a while I was sure I had noisy/poor audio because I'm using the stock antenna on my vx7 HT.    Today I installed a J-Pole and while it works great it has not fixed my soundmodem problem.

In a nutshell, here's my issue:   I have installed and configured soundmodem per the ax25 howto on a fresh FC10 box.   I launch soundmodemconfig  and open the scope and modem windows.   I set my levels using the alsamixer and I can clearly see packet traffic, and I also get the DCD signal.   However, I do not get any data in the modem window as I know I should.    I've tweaked my levels high and low but I get nothing.

I've duplicated this setup with soundmodem on a windows box and it was decoding data very quickly.

What could possibly be wrong?  I'm still puzzled as why I would get DCD but no data Sad

Gary Huntress
