I need advice from someone more mechanical than myself, before I ask away no negative comments on the antenna it was bought for me as a Christmas gift and I'm currently having no trouble with it HI HI !! My vechicle is a 2004 GMC Sierra, I have a Pro Rack mounted to it (specificlly for antenna mounting), the problem I'm having is rust. I went with a direct mount to the rack via a barrel connector, and I need (or would like to leave it this way due to no operatioal problems) due to clearence and most importantly (to me) I can easilly remove it when needed (car wash ect). The bare area on the rack is constantly rusting and its becoming a chore to keep breaking out the drill and wire brush to keep it clean (cant seal it with spray or caulk, obviouslly when removed that seal will be broke). My thought is a trip to home depot to purchase an aluminum bar or stainless if I can find it. Just wondering if taking this bar and bolting to the rack and reconnecting my ground wires to the bar and sealing the outside (exposed) edges with paint and silicone is doable or maybe someone has used this same mounting method and has come up with a better idea ? OK remember it was a gift, the antenna I'm using is the ATAS-120A (used for 40-6) I have v/uhf antennas mounted sepratley on the side bars using half mirror mounts and no trouble and like I said I would prefer to use the center flat bar for the ATAS. Thanks for any help here.
Hi, I use what is called a Headache Rack on my Ford Ranger, it is similar to the Pro Rack except it looks like venetian blinds. I have antennas mounted on mine and it is painted, no ground issues at all, good swr and performance. If you would like to trade notes, you can email me at k2fox@comcast.net. -Jay

I actually work in the picking department for Amazon.com in one of their Fulfillment centers, picking customer orders. Yes, we do carry quite a few ham and shortwave radios. The 10% employee discount I receive always helps whenever I see something that catches my eye.
Hi Michael, I also work for Amazon (PHL1) in th I.T. department. Currently out on LOA, This would have been my 12th PEAK, gonna miss it this year. What FC do you work in? I too have purchased many HAM items from Amazon, between the already low prices and free shipping, PLUS the Emp Disc I'd be stupid not to. -Jay

Hi everyone and Happy Thanksgiving (late evening). I've purchased a wide variety of tubes from Penta Labs over the last several years http://www.pentalabs.com/about.html and found the tubes reasonably priced and durable. Three Chinese made 811's @ $18 each plus shipping last December. You would have to call for the current price. Just another option...all the recommendations have been good. -Jay

The rf does not know if its electrons are being used on a ham band or cb.... Some of the CB operators apparently don't know either You win, you were the first to leave a negative comment, and on only the second reply to the thread!

All really poor CB rubbish that does not belong on the ham bands.
Why any ham would want to use this CB garbage on the ham bands in the form of splattering CB amplifiers and freeband CB radios with poor IMD suppression is beyond belief. There are so many affordable genuine ham radios available that perform much better and cost less. A second point is that the economics of buying a freeband radio and crap CB amplifier dont add up when you can buy a proper 100 watt transceiver like the IC718 for much less money. The operating ergonomics is certainly superior. I guess you cant take the CB'er out of some hams. It seems many CB'ers who become hams dont want to give up their ignorant ways and poor equipment.
Leave the CB junk up on the CB bands not on the ham bands.
Hams who use this type equipment stand out like sore thumb on the ham bands because of the interference that they cause. It seems many hams who use this equipment suffer from technical deficit disorder, it seems that there is no cure for this malaise.
From the man with a CB HANDLE for a screen name. LOL!

I, too, had a similar experience. I ordered from them because they had the best price, but I also waited for what seemed an eternity to get a ship date. Yes, I was in a rush to get the item because it was going to be a gift for Christmas. Over two weeks went buy before correspondence informed me that my order had been "overlooked". With the holiday fast approaching and the item yet to be delivered, I had no choice but to cancel and drive to the nearest HRO (1 hour in good traffic conditions) to make my purchase. Needless to say, I no longer shop there.

I'm listening to N4LEN on 14.197 which is Extra/Advance portion of 20m, but N4LEN is a Tech. So Tech's are allowed on 20 now?
Maybe you copied his call wrong? N4LE"M" is listed as an extra....just a thought...

Hi. I had a similar issue on a Ford Expedition. The roof was flat underneath the "rib", which was a rubber strip glued to the flat roof. I removed a 1 inch piece of the rib right in the middle of the roof and drilled. NMO mount was right in the middle of the rib, dead center on the roof. If your Blazer is the same, it may work for you too.
Good luck.

Hi Duane, I guess by now you have mounted your radio. I used this type of mount in my last vehicle, a '98 Expedition. The mount bolted to the front edge of the left side passenger seat rail. It held an Icom 706 control head and mic, and for a short time a small swr meter - all at the same time. Nary a problem.
Let us know how you made out.

eHam Forums / Antennas and Towers and more / RE: Rohn Tower Top Section Vs. Thrust Bearing
|
on: March 22, 2012, 05:33:49 PM
|
The Rohn 25g tower that I have includes a tapered top section with a 2" O.D. tube at the top. My question is really about the top section. Does the tapered top and the tube take the place of a thrust bearing and bearing plate? Can I depend on the tube at the top to take the lateral forces? Or should I get rid of the tapered top section and start looking for a Thrust Bearing Plate and Bearing?
Thanks
Dan KI4AX
Use both the tapered section AND a thrust bearing. Taper will help with the lateral load and the bearing will help with the downward forces put on the rotor. It will extend rotor life considerably.

I think the moderators do the best they can. How would YOU like to deal with all the nasty people and cry babies on these forums? It can get like a nursery school sometimes. And if they wanted to, these folks would be gone. I think they use a remarkable amount of restraint. There are at least a dozen I would have booted.
