61  eHam Forums / Mobile Ham / HM-118 Hand Mike worthless? on: March 16, 2004, 01:54:49 PM
May be give Icom a call. I went through their manual on a 706 from their website and could not find anything on a setting you may have to perform when hooking up a different mike, as far as DTMF goes.

62  eHam Forums / Mobile Ham / HM-118 Hand Mike worthless? on: March 15, 2004, 02:56:41 AM
I don't know if you ever had any of these DTMF Mikes before,(Like what would be standard on a 2 meter rig) but with my Yaesu 2m FT-2500 (and most others I would guess) you have to key the mike, then press the buttons to transmit the tone. I do not hear the tone when transmitting, as you don't hear your voice through the speaker.

May be the simple answer ??

Good luck !

63  eHam Forums / Elmers / Speed's affect on VHF 5/8 Wave on: March 13, 2004, 01:00:09 PM
Dan,

I have a thought on this bending deal. It's a good question, and it seems answered that it doesn't matter too much, as far as what "shape" it gets in to a certain degree.

Because I run in and out of the woods a lot I put a spring on my Larson 5/8 wave. With that, the element itself has less "arch" to it as the spring allows it to bend at its base a little more, saving the whip from flexing over vs. a solid mount. Not the reason for my spring, but may be a benefit if a guy was one of them "purists" !!

The aluminum mast is four feet and the element is about 33 inches I believe.

74  eHam Forums / Antennas and Towers and more / end fed matching question on: February 18, 2004, 02:40:10 AM
As the "tuner’s” purpose is to “make” a 50 Ohm load for the radio to work into, anything going out from the tuner (your antenna SYSTEM) can be quite a miss-match. Coax coming out of the tuner (even though 50 Ohm) would not be part of the radiator element as it is shielded. The wire (long/random, whatever) because of MANY factors will most likely have a high resistance at it’s feed point thus causing VERY high SWR in the coax feeding it, making its (the coax) power loss’ VERY high.

When folks, for example, feed a dipole multi-band, they use window or ladder line out of the tuner because if they use coax to feed it the SWR would be so high, all or most of their power would be lost in the coax. Ladder or window line has very little loss in these applications.

Why would you want to rig it up the way you’re asking anyway?

Sometimes what is popular in not what is best,in other words there is a lot of hipe about the 706, but "someday" I'm getting the 706 as I have heard a lot of positive remarks on this rig, and it's continued high sales numbers must mean something.

Looked at your photo on the profile page. Are you powering those rigs you got with that little 10 amp. supply ??

73 and have fun with the new rig!
