IARU used to be more fun when they had the HQ contest. Unfortunately a tiff a few years ago spoiled it and killed it

I live in a cave.  What's a "tiff"

Thanks Randy

3  eHam Forums / DXing / RE: What to do with "confirmed" QSL cards on: May 19, 2013, 10:20:13 AM
I had the same problem.  Some of my cards are very beautiful and scenic of the area the station/dxpeditions location.  My computer has Win 7 OS and one of the features of Win 7 is the ability to create a slide show on your desktop background.  Scanned my cards, put them in a folder and have the slide show do the rest.  Sometimes I just set back and watch the slideshow.  My wife's computer has Win 8 and offers the same feature.  I don't know about other OS's.  Thanks for the psk report yesterday Jon.

at what distance can we count on making specific contacts, ball park est ?..100, 500 miles ?

That's an impossible question to answer, too many variables in this equation.  Your antenna, your equipment, your location and propagation just to name a few variables all contribute to how well you do.  One thing for certain with HF is you'll be able to outperform 2 meters hands down.  My suggestion would be to upgrade your license and explore the hf bands and have some fun in the process!

Randy- do you recall the name of the person that you spoke to?  I asked Sharon if it was here and she said 'no'.  Since DXCC accreditation is date based it could be possible that EZ8BP is accredited prior to 1/1/2007.  Did you provide a contact date to the young lady?

Jonathan, I don't recall the lady's name but I did call again and spoke to Bill Moore this time and you're right.  The lady must not have noticed the date I told her.  Boy, this really is a total let down.  After 2007, nothing is accepted for DXCC accreditation.  That is only one of 3 entities I don't have confirmed and was hoping it would be if I get a card from him.  Oh well, I guess the worst is I don't get a QSL card from him.  Sorry everyone for the wishful announcement.

UPDATE
I just got off the phone with the ARRL DXCC desk.  I did this inquiry to satisfy my curiosity.  I asked them if EZ8BP was okay for DXCC accreditation and the nice young lady told me "yes".

Thanks Bryan for the education, it sure makes keeping track of the counties much, much easier.  That's what happens when you live in a cave hi hi.  I never knew that Eqsl kept track of the counties.  I knew eQSL partnered with CQ for the counties as far as verification.  In a way it was kind of disheartening though, I thought I'd worked more counties.  636 isn't many for 4 1/2 year of using eQSL.  I only have 19 states left using CW before I get the triple play on the WAS.  Guess I need to get busy on this.  Maybe after a good nap.

The big question is how does Bill Moore know the up-to-the-minute status regarding licensing in EZ

Jonathan, I was talking to the DXCC people concerning another Turkmenistan station (EZ5A) I'd worked last year and it was a curiosity question.  He didn't imply anything but was making a comment and Bill did want me to ask the operator about submitting a required paperwork to the DXCC desk.  That raised my curiosity but subsequently my QSL was returned after a couple of months later.  The reason it was returned was written in a foreign language but interrupted "undeliverable".   I knew when I worked this station yesterday there was a lot of doubt but "nothing ventured, nothing gained".  The only time I wish I wouldn't have used that saying was on a couple of my stock investments.  I guess time will tell but I will explore this recent incident and since only wants IRC's, I'll send him a QSL card with IRC's.

Since the incident of ZK3T where there was a question of whether he was a pirate or not, I decided to take a chance.  It took about an hour before his signal got strong enough to copy and it continued to build.  Started out a weak signal so I went out and worked and then returned to find it was fair copy.  I figured I had nothing to lose except some time.  His QRZ page looked promising so now I have him in the log instead of sitting on my hands and pondering whether he’s legit or not.  Last year I’d spoken with the DXCC desk concerning Turkmenistan, I believe his name was Bill Moore, and at that time there was some thought about Turkmenistan coming on board. I hope he’s legit but only time will tell.  BTW thanks for not trying to work him, less QRM for me cause he was working simplex.  Smiley

For those of you wishing to work Turkmenistan, EZ8BP was on 20 meters CW this afternoon.  He was on for quite a while working a lot of NA.  I don't know if he'll be back tomorrow but you might want to keep an eye out for this one.  This is only the 2nd time I've seen Turkmenistan on in last 4 years and he had a nice signal into Florida.

Thanks Bryan fir the info on how you keep track of the counties.  I also use HRD version 5 (6 still has a few bugs I don't like) and eQSL.  The only place I see county option is in the layout of the logbook.  It's too bad HRD doesn't have a special part in the awards page.  It's strange that someone hasn't developed a computer program to aid in tracking counties. I should have majored in computer programming instead of nursing.  This looks like a multiple rainy day project just putting the info into their book CQ reccommends.  I have a few years worth of electronic log info to transfer.
