I don't know of anyone who has learned CW the way you are going about it. CW is about "critical listening" and associating a sound with a character and putting it down on a word processor or pad. Eventually it gets to "head copy" where one can hear CW as words. I don't think you will hone that skill "visually".
Don't take my word for it, search the forum or google "learning Morse code".
I've been working on the skill for nearly a year before I ventured to do any QSOs just recently. Do what you want, but I'm just saying that there is no such thing as a shortcut with AR CW!
As far as visual use of Morse code, consider the Navy Signalmen/Quartermasters. They don't hear any code unless the two searchlights being used are close enough to hear the shutters. And yet they are able to copy the flashing light just fine. A good sending speed for them, however, is around 12-15 WPM, limited by the amount of friction in the shutter movement. I don't know what their required speed is for receiving these days, but when I was on active duty, the Senior and Master Chief Signalmen seemed impressed that I, fresh out of Radioman school, could copy flashing light as fast as they could send it. Including two misspelled words that I pointed out. "Dammit, Bailey! I threw those in on purpose and you caught both of them! You can be a Signalman on my bridge any time you're not on watch in Radio!"

I need help with a small project for a Social Informatics course. I need to identify a small group (10-25) of people by a common thread and gather a bit on information about cell phone usage. For the group, I have chosen fellow amateur radio operators, and all that I ask is that you answer the following questions and email the answers back to me ab2rc@ab2rc.net. Age & Gender - 69 YEARS OLD; MALE Do you own a cell phone? YES If you do not have a cell phone, what is the MAIN reason that you do not have one. Is your phone considered to be a smartphone? NO If you have a plain vanilla phone is there a reason why? I DON'T NEED ANYTHING MORE. How often do you use your cell for calls? MAYBE A COUPLE OF TIMES A WEEK. How often do you use your cell for texting? NEVER If the answer for the above two questions is never - why? WHAT'S WRONG WITH USING VOICE? optional - tell me anything specific about your cell usage, have you noticed any usage patterns on your own? MOSTLY USE IT WHEN AWAY FROM THE HOUSE FOR IF XYL CALLS. Thanks in advance. You will not be identified in the study, and all help will be greatly appreciated. 73 de Alex/AB2RC

If a mounting plate is available, mount the rotor on the plate and install inside the tower. If not available, you could make one perhaps. Otherwise you'd probably have to go with a lower mast clamp above the tower. Might help if we knew just what rotor you have.

I generally carry a multimeter with me when I go to hamfests/swapmeets, etc. I trust it a lot more than I do some of the sellers.
I'd bet your dummy load's DC resistance between the center of the connector to the shell reads as an open circuit. Second guess would be dead short. It should be very close to 50 ohms.

The hardest transition I had to make with different types of keys was going from Mode B to my old Vibroplex Presentation. I was so used to having the dahs made automatically (and perfectly!) that I'd just wait, sending an extra-long dah, and wondering why it was "stuck"!
For me these days, it's Mode B or straight key.

I understand, Greg. By the time the Bosnian war was going on, I was USNR, doing my bit to keep Navy ships' electrical and IC systems up and running. When it's "boots on the ground" you have to do what's necessary, as you said, to keep the troops accounted for.
Never having had anything to do with heroic rescues other than being on a ship that carried a BUNCH of aircraft, the crews of which would have gladly done what those you worked with did, I thank you for your good words on their behalf.
Grammatically, that's probably the worst sentence I've written in a good long while!

Navy and USNR for 32 years.
I never heard of a "verify caller" prosig/prosign. If I needed to verify who was calling my station on CW, I used "DE NZFF - INT QRZ K", with the INT sent as one character.
If I thought I had the other station's call right (let's assume I had it as NUSN) but wanted to check for sure, I'd use "DE NZFF - INT NUSN K".
NZFF was USS Kitty Hawk (CVA-63). Now SK.

Ah, yes -- the "Bird". Probably talking about the Model 43, which is a decent, rugged meter which is still only accurate within ±5% of FSV. And if you add the "Peak" kit, making it a Model 43P, it's only ±8% FSV. And like any other measurement device, it requires periodic calibration - along with any slugs used with it.
The Bird 43 is not a "lab standard"; however, many seem to think it's the touchstone for "accuracy".

..--..
To the military it is/was the prosign IMI, meaning "repeat" or "I repeat". To hams and commercial CW operators it is a question mark.
and UCB -- you might want to check your call sign against what you typed in the first post.

Yep, no Hungarian freedom fighters here. So if you commuted to/from Adak via Reeve, then you probably have the honor of being among the last people on Earth to fly on a revenue flight in a Lockheed Electra! My one flight to/from Adak was in December 1974, where I was a member of a surveying team for one of the two YTBs (Large Yard Tugboats) that were assigned to Adak. Ever check out the VLF array at North West Cape, Australia? I had a chance to get stationed there in the '60s, right when construction was about complete. BUT - the Lord had other plans for me!

Sorry--inside family joke. Most of the people in my family drink coffee by the gallon and when I set up the tibor.org domain I just created a little placeholder page and thought that would be appropriate. Ah! So the Google hits regarding Hungarian Freedom Fighters and so forth aren't too relevant for these antennas -- gotcha! I thought I'd seen something like those quite a few years ago when I was on the way out to Adak via Reeve Airlines (Hail Mary Airlines).
