46  eHam Forums / Antennas and Towers and more / RE: 40 meters indoor antenna on: February 17, 2013, 10:00:09 AM
For the initial radio, impedance matching won't be critical at all since it's only for receive.  Since you don't have a radio that transmits (unless you have an impedance analyzer), you probably won't be able to closely match it anyway, so just us a calculated length.

What you can put up depends on where in the house it will go.  I would suggest a 40M dipole fed with coax, starting with 33" on each leg.  If it's going in the attic, just stretch it out as straight as you can.  If it's going in a room, I would put it at the juction of the walls and ceiling.  It won't matter much if you have to wrap the ends around the corners of the room.

Later when you have an analyzer, or a transmitting rig and SWR meter, you can trim the antenna for best SWR in the band portion of interest.  Performance may not be the greatest, as any indoor antenna is a compromise.  But any antenna is better than no antenna.

That's going to be an awfully short 40m dipole, Don.  Or did you mean 33' on each leg?

Takes all kinds to make a world,

As my old mentor used to say, "It doesn't really take all kinds - we just happen to HAVE all kinds."

Do you have the manual?  If so, look on page 11.

If not, get a copy from the Internet (free), and learn about your rig.

A lot of the "freeze spray" stuff was pure freon and one spray would cause the end of the world.
51  eHam Forums / Elmers / RE: Grounding station in 2nd story extra room on: February 01, 2013, 05:39:22 PM
Do you actually NEED a ground?  Does your house have the 3-prong receptacles?  If so, that third prong IS ground and for safety you don't need anything additional.
52  eHam Forums / CW / RE: FCC CW Test Content on: January 31, 2013, 10:01:12 PM
Yeah - that was an odd size.  Maybe it was a standard back in the day, though.  The Navy used to use   8 x 10.5 inch paper for stationery.  When I submitted my application for the Warrant Officer program, the instruction clearly stated that size, and the local Naval Reserve station actually HAD a bunch of it!

Guess it worked.  But 7 x 9???

Try it and see.
55  eHam Forums / Amplifiers / RE: General AMP question: Which one should I get? on: January 26, 2013, 09:38:58 AM
You're going to get a lot of replies that will probably be discouraging for you.  Thing is, we out here can't possibly predict exactly at what point interference will start in your specific situation..

That's what experimenting is for.

Scroll down to Cuba and follow the suggestions there.  I don't know if you have to be an ARRL member to open the link.
57  eHam Forums / Misc / RE: which band would you recommend. on: January 20, 2013, 05:48:04 PM
I strongly recommend a band that's open at the time you want to get on the air.
58  eHam Forums / Elmers / RE: Dummy Load on: January 20, 2013, 05:44:22 PM
Or you could buy one or more these and build your own dummy load. http://www.digikey.com/product-detail/en/CHF190104KBF500L/CHF190104KBF500L-ND/2174498
Put ten them together with a healthy blower cooled heat sink you have the mother of all dummy loads.

Series or parallel?

Both.
59  eHam Forums / Amplifiers / RE: Getting an L-4B to run on a Yeasu 897D on: January 19, 2013, 04:03:43 PM
The manual seems to cover this.  The only two pin jack I see in the picture is labelled VOX RELAY.

If you don't have a copy of the manual, you might get one via Google.  There are a lot of sources, and most of them are free.
