1  eHam Forums / Computers And Software / Parallel Port Pin 17 CW keying with HRD on: October 19, 2012, 08:38:52 PM
Hello all,

I have HRD loaded and all works well EXCEPT for the PARALLEL PORT I have interfaced for CW keying. I am using a simple 2N2222 driver to key my IC756PROIII. The interface works perfectly with N1MM but when I run HRD it doesnt. It appears the LOGIC state is reversed. HRD keys a LOGIC low for CW characters instead of keying a LOGIC high like N1MM does. Really odd.

I have the latest version of HRD running. Anyone else have this experience ?

How do you characterize "oscillation" ? What is oscillating and what are the necessary elements(certain power levels, etc) that need to be present for your "oscillation" condition to be present ?

The issue I have is when the rig is keyed and held keyed, the transmitter will react and not output power until about 500ms later. Every instance of keying will sometimes exhibit this. I also read that the PRO II models had some sort of "dit clipping issue" which was resolved fully in the PRO III. What caused that issue ? Are you familiar with this ?

This sounds like the common oscillation issue, usually due to a faulty RFRX-muting circuit (Q25, D22, D23 on the CTRL Unit), and possibly a bad diode or two on the RF Unit (D104, D801).

The oscillation is usually most noticeable on 6 meters, but it can also affect 10 and 12 meters.

The component damage is usually due to an ESD event, or RF-overload from a nearby transmitter.

I own a ICOM 756 PRO III which I bought brand new back in 2001.

I noted an odd transmit issue that only seems to occur on 6 meters. This only occurs on 6 meters.

Upon keying the rig in CW, the power output will throttle back fully momentarily and then key up. This occurs intermittently. Sometimes the rig works fine. The SWR appears prefect according to the SWR meter when the rig is transmitting full power or any lower level of power. I use a M2 6M5X up 70 feet, fed by 1/2 heliax. I also have a MOSLEY PRO 57B at 65 feet which I use with no issue at all at full power. The shack is in the basement.

If I watch the meter, the ALC appears to slam at full reading when the rig is first keyed, the power output throttles back for about 500ms and then powers up fully again. SWR reads perfect. This behaviour does not occur on the lower HF bands. I note that the ALC reacts odd only on 6 meters. I have 13.8 volts supplied to the rig from a solid ASTRON 35 amp supply.

I did place the PRO III on a dummy load and the issue does not occur. You would think there is something going on in the antenna system but the match is good. I recently used the rig on 6 meter SSB with no issues.

Has anyone else experienced this issue ?

<SNIP>

If this was about operating a stove or washing machine, or scrubbing a toilet, women would be standing in line to get in. <SNIP>

Huh  Roll Eyes OMG, Are you kidding me ? I dont think so !

Everyone needs to face up to the following fact when considering how Ham Radio will continue to capture interest regardless of gender:

FUN is contagious. If someone sees you enjoying yourself, then they too want to be involved too or at least watch you. Are you having fun with this hobby ?

Does anyone make a protective case with a strap for the Palstar ZM30 ?
7  eHam Forums / RFI / EMI / Remote Electric Power Meters that use TWACS on: January 05, 2011, 07:07:09 PM
I have been noting a consistent noise on 75 meters around 3890 where I normally listen. This bursty signal occurs every 5 minute. There are 4 bursts in succession. The power meter I have is a Schlumberger Power Meter with a DSCI module in it which I assume does TWACS. The local power company, Pennsylvania Power & Light uses this system.

This is a blurb on TWACS "The TWACS system uses the existing
power lines for data transmission, and since it modulates the waveform at the zero crossing
point, it uses the utility’s network at the frequency for which it was designed."

Although this is not entirely annoying, it is noticable. Has anyone else had any experiences with RFI from these meters ?
8  eHam Forums / VHF / UHF / Nothing to hear on 6M? on: July 21, 2006, 10:17:43 AM
There is plenty of activity on 10 meter FM and 6 meter FM. Dont forget that these bands "open" up for Sporadic E and sometimes F layer QSOs. 144 & 440 are not capable of opening up for DX QSO's. Having a quad band rig when the band is open is alot of fun. Ill buy your quad bander if you get bored of it.
9  eHam Forums / VHF / UHF / The best multimode HF/VHF rig for weak signal on: July 21, 2006, 09:47:04 AM
I am considering purchasing an HF rig that includes 6 meters. What is the best "weak signal" rig that accomodates 6 meters with good receiver performance:

1)good dynamic range in the front end
2)excellent sensitivity
3)an effective noise blanker
4)Digital Signal Processing
5)Bandscope

I want a solid receiver on 6 meters but I also want the rig to rock on HF.
10  eHam Forums / DXing / DX cluster email notification on: July 17, 2005, 09:27:21 AM
Is there any "freeware" or even "shareware" out there that will support the following:

1)Filtering of DX spots country/band/mode/beacons etc.
2)Based on the above, send email notifications when spots are found.

I have seen VE7CC's program which runs on your PC. I dont see any capability for email notifications in this program or have I missed something ?

Noise from High Tension wires......Certainly depends on the conditions of the lines and how well the utility maintains them. Power utilties send data through these high tension lines and this can create some horrific noise on HF.....Borrow a FT-817 if you can to poke around for noise on HF. Scan the entire spectrum from 1.8 to 50 MHz. Weather plays a big role in power line noise. Try poking around on cold and warm days if you can under different weather conditions(Wet and dry). I have been fighting RFI from many different sources for years....Neon lighting...bad sign ballasts....power line noise from the typical 5KV neighborhood power lines.....Certainly recent news from the FCC and the fact that Riley has pushed the resolution of power line noise issues back into the utility's face is a very good thing.....I have started a web page dedicated to just RFI issues....If anyone has any contributions, I would love to hear from them.
