1  eHam Forums / Computers And Software / RE: Windows 7 SP1 on: May 07, 2011, 04:14:49 PM
Hi..there has been many instances that Win 7 SP1 for 64 bit is iffy...32 bit is ok...just do a little research on the subject first, but just to let those that need to know, is that any Antivirus programs and the likes should be stopped while "doing" this transition...this is the bottleneck that usually happens when doing SP# updates...trust me, you'll have less headaches....and if possible, make sure you have "restore point" set up in case something happens....my 2 cents

And on another note....Win 7 SP1 update has a problem with 64 bit systems....do a search on this...32 bit hasn't any problems when it comes to SP1...did on 3 machines no problem(32bit)

In regards to the new laptop idea....we check out Office Depot in Canada and ACER is the very least that ever visit the
repair dept. Toshiba's are the worst....just visit one and ask the repair dept. and see for yourself....plus they usually have lots of Acers on sale...plus some on the clearance table...just thought i past that along for those that are looking.

4  eHam Forums / Elmers / Coax via window? on: March 09, 2009, 01:37:27 PM
Good day people!!...just wanting to inquire to those that ever had to run coax through your window opening.
The last 2 years in my new home have given me some challenging insights on how to channel coax thru the openings, while still being able to keep the cold and bugs out. Althought, i'll take any examples to light, if given any. The thought of an access point through the walls sends shivers up my spine(plus the xyl on my case) won't work here!!
So, who has the know-how and ingenuity for this dilema..short of throwing the window out the proverbial door!!

Thanks again for the time and patience for responding..

Hi.....whole hearted agreement about Norton...axe it.....AVG free(8.0), Spybot search and destroy (1.5.2), SpywareBlaster (4.1) and Ccleaner by Piriform ltd.(free) are my choices when cleaning other people systems....but i also purchased from PCTOOLS....Spyware Doctor and Registry Mechanic are tops ( 20 yrs exp.) help me made those last two decisions and would highly recommend to fellow hams and family

good luck

Well...if you can find old dinasaur style Cell phones attachments...i found an old metal style clip-onto window version for old cell phones antenna..(probably for those who didn't want to scratch vehicle)...anyhow made the hole big enough for SO-239, got a piece of coax...spent 19 cents at a welding shop for proper size piece of brazing rod to fit SO239 (19"+), made an itsy bitsy loop at the end of rod and now my friend won't have to scratch his AZTEC..clips to window, roll up window for tight fit, unclip when not in use...done

Well, if your 9 iron is handy, why not practice hitting it over the tree, thru the tree, at the tree etc...tape the fishing line to it and voila!

just remember to yell.... FORE!!

and listen for breaking glass and give the club to your kid!!

9  eHam Forums / Elmers / Bicycle setup on: September 17, 2004, 03:51:50 AM
I'm back...and thanks for the suggestions and ideas..

at a weekly coffee break, i mentioned this to a friend (VE3TYQ) and he remembered it has
a couple of Dynamo/wheel bike lights (older styles from 70's)..mounted to the rear wheels
(against the frame, dynamo sprung to the sidewalls for dynamo to turn and charge)
into an emergency lighting type gel cells which in turn fed to your HT to give a contact for 100
bonus points on Field Day for manmade/human powered contact(s).....
i found out these old dynamos are rated at 6v 3w

Also found out about using a long orange fiberglass flag (for bikes) and mount a jpole (twin lead or coax?) with heat shrink over it....

well you all get the idea....

This is all getting very interesting and can't wait to
experiment on holidays in a few weeks...

I just might have to join BMHA...

Bicycle Mobile Hams of America

thanks for the web listing...gonna get busy reading

and i'll keep you all posted...

thanks again

Good day friends...long time since i last posted...

Many years ago during a Field Day setup, an elmer had a human powered setup on a 10 speed bike, consisting of gel cells and the likes...it's rear wheel was mounted on an elevated stationary platform
complete with old style wheel generated bike lights!!

So just recently I bought a new bike to shed a few pounds and wanted to do something different. Then i remembered that specific Field Day. I wanted to experiment so i can still enjoy the hobby at the same time while exercising.

Has anyone come across a diagram/layout of something like this....i've checked the homebrew links here and nothing i can find...i did manage to find some neat bike antenna setups, if anyone can indulge a few website to point me to, i would be grateful...

thanks for your time and patience

13  eHam Forums / Elmers / list of must haves!!!??? on: July 13, 2002, 04:48:11 PM
Good day!..it's been a while since a threw a thread on here, but here it goes anyhow: I came across a great bargain at a ham fleamarket last weekend. What i'd like to know (and this is the most appropriate site to go) is what list of "must haves" should i put into my laptop computer?...

I'm sure there are several of you of there that swear, that you wouldn't go anywhere without your program for contesting, morse tutor or ant. design, etc...

Would the huddled massses like to enlightened me on your favourites...maybe a little blurb about why you like this program you have and perhaps a link to it for me to peruse and for those who are also interested in said program...

I'd more likely go with a Win 9x version(preference), but i'm openminded and would check all submissions to any programs...shareware/freeware are preferred (for investment later)...

i'll be looking forward to reading this thread for sometime...

Thanks for your time and patience everyone!!

Hi..you need to go to customs canada and register any equipment you want to bring in to the US...this means anything with a serial/model number on rigs, amps, perhaps antennas?...this in turns are given a green type card with said ser/model on it...but it also allows you to verify you has a legit amateur from Canada...so when you grab that neat gizmo for a few bucks..you have to declare on it, but it eliminates you from paying taxes on said item you bought...as long as it is radio related only....it's been 10 years since my last excursion, so things may have changed since then....good luck

Hi Robert, the other replies are right on the money....i found most building centres have a scrap/reduced items bin....damaged wood, doors, counter tops,etc.. that they can't sell...so you could get a solid door that was $85 for about $30, i've seen 10' kitchen tops go for $25....Home depot also has these huge 1/4" thick angle bracket 2' tall by 15" deep that has a 1000 lbs weight barrier...you could almost make a bed when your done contesting for the night and be ready for the morning!

good luck
