46  eHam Forums / Elmers / Portable Batteries for ICOM 706 on: September 06, 2006, 03:32:44 PM
Rick, If you want a battery operated radio, but the IC-703. The IC-706 requires over 1A just for the receiver, closer to 1.2A. This is a lot of resource to waste.
47  eHam Forums / Elmers / STP vs UTP ethernet cable to reduce RFI? on: September 01, 2006, 02:08:46 PM
cat 7?? cat 6 has not been standardized yet.

IN MOST CASES, unless you have a real rare problem, category 5e should work just fine. It is self shielding, and quality cable has been swept to 350MHz.

Most noise sources are not the cable, but the devices along the route... routers, bridges, hubs, switches will all generate some noise, just buy quality stuff.

the ARC offers courses in the operation of ARC jobs. Every function of the ARC has an ID, each has normally, a three level course, depending on the level of your activity.

Many of these classes require to be invited, especially, the higher level courses.

The local ARC may not offer these, but the DSHR does. As a comm tech/comm officer, it is recommended that we take all courses so we know what group requires what support.
49  eHam Forums / Misc / Why men like W6WBJ don't want women on the air.. on: August 06, 2006, 07:55:57 PM
You mean to tell me that you have never seen the bumper sticker that says...

"Ham Radio, its a MAN'S HOBBY" ??

Yes, the target was CB (Children's Band), but some took it too extreme. circa 1976
50  eHam Forums / Elmers / Launching a line w/o an airgun, bow or slingshot? on: August 06, 2006, 07:22:00 AM
then don't CALL it a "sling shot" or "spud gun", it is an antenna installation TOOL.

A "burgler tool" is only a screwdriver until someone breaks open the kitchen door in the middle of the night but the rest of its life is spent being a screwdriver.
51  eHam Forums / Elmers / Sears sold ham equipment on: July 25, 2006, 08:25:55 PM
Sears also sold a crystal controlled 220 rig.
52  eHam Forums / Elmers / Repair Help For Astron RS-35A on: July 13, 2006, 01:27:54 PM
no, you are not the odd man out, I too have never seen the LM723 (uA723) fail in my 35M, what did fail was 1/2 of the full wave bridge, one of the bridges opened. In MY 35M, they used two full wave bridges rated at 25A, used half of one for the positive side, and 1/2 of the other for the negative side. One failed.

I did mod mine to float charge a battery.
53  eHam Forums / Elmers / Why do I hear KFI on 450.725Mhz?? in LA area on: July 11, 2006, 09:31:40 PM
I hope you have not been talking there!

In these parts, the local broadcasters use this portion of the band for helocopter traffic reports as well as reporters transmitting back to the station with live feeds from the field. Fun to listen to the copter guys talking to the ground.
54  eHam Forums / Elmers / Good source for large RF toroids. on: July 10, 2006, 04:13:23 PM
yes, contact Diz, W8DIZ.

He has a huge selection with no minimum orders.

w8diz@partsandkits.com

And tell him "Oink Oink".
55  eHam Forums / Digital / Do I need a Priest???? on: July 09, 2006, 10:05:02 PM
the beeps are a function of the BIOS. They indicate either an error or a pass. Depends on the beeps.

They usually indicate a memory error, but could be a missing kybd or mouse, could even be a CPU error.

Read them as morse code!
Let us know what they say and the main board brand.

56  eHam Forums / Elmers / Property Line?? on: June 22, 2006, 05:04:55 PM
Joe, I guess it all boils down to whos ears got mashed when you climbed all over them. If you had to fight to get the permits, those that stood in the path are going to be the first to watch your every move so they can bitch at you. If the whole process was simple and friendly, chances are you won't have a problem.

Remember that most people are lazy, if you do not tell them they will never know.
57  eHam Forums / Elmers / A VERY new member says Hello! on: June 22, 2006, 04:58:48 PM
welcome to the service, it is a great hobby!

Don't waste your time with the tech or the general, but ANYONE that has taked the test to fly, much less become a flight instructor, anyone that can get certs, can surely pass a simple, painfully slow, 5wpm of morse code.

Picking gear for someone else is like picking underware.

Now, what I LIKE... I too use an IC706mk2g. I like the High Sierra Sidekick for the car and at home, I use a simple "fan" dipole and an Icom AH4 auto-tuner. Itis called a fan dipole because I have four dipoles on different bands, all fed at the same center point, and then fed by the AH4 via 450 ohm ladder line.
58  eHam Forums / Elmers / Drive on Push up Pole Mount on: June 12, 2006, 09:04:27 PM
I have the pole holder for the Reese hitch that I use while camping.

I think that you are wishing for too much when you think that you are going up 40 feet. That is a LOT of weight, you will need to guy it. The plank and floor flange works nicely with my mil-surplus mast, but I only go up about 24 feet and still, I really need to guy for large wire antennas.
59  eHam Forums / Elmers / Drive on Push up Pole Mount on: June 12, 2006, 06:26:35 PM
yes, UncommonUSA sells them, they sell flag poles and flags.

I made one from a 2x8, about 3 feet long, with a large floor flange bolted to the end of the plank. I then screw a pipe into the floor flange and drop my mast into the pipe. SIMPLE!
