1  eHam Forums / DXing / RE: Your longest wait for a QSL card..... on: April 26, 2013, 02:08:49 PM
About 27 years waiting for KZ5OJ.

After trying for years to track him down, he happened to google his old call and saw my posting here on eHam asking if anyone knew what became of him.  After a couple of emails, he sent me a photocopy of his original (blank) QSL with our QSO info written in.

A long wait, but that card confirmed all my deleted countries!

Hi Sean--

I'll be interested to hear how your project goes as I am planning something similar.

W6UX put up a hex on a spiderbeam pushup mast and posted pictures here:
https://picasaweb.google.com/1076242...eat=directlink

You can also see how K4KIO mounted his hex on a Rohn pushup mast at his website:

Hope this give you some ideas.  Keep us posted!

My hold out is Uzbekistan.  I worked UM20Y for an ATNO, but after sending a QSL and GS (mistake) and getting nothing, I see on his QRZ page that he does not QSL and does not use LoTW.  Angry

I am amazed to have actually heard them on 17 CW this afternoon (1900Z) on my vertical.

Of course the pile up was formidable especially with the EU stations calling when he was asking for USA.  It seems like the window to work him was about 45 mins because as of now (2040Z) he is barely a whisper of ESP.

After restringing and retuning my fallen 2 ele 15M inverted-V "beam" (inspired by KY6R and his K1WA arrays) and seeing (ok, hearing) some really nice F/B, I'm tempted to string one up for Heard.  Although now Rich mentions his Moxon and gets my mind working again  Smiley

Maybe a 160M Inverted L if I can get the tree guy back to clean up the tree that took out the inverted V array.  Who know, if I get real ambitious, perhaps I'll figure out a way to get a tribander in the trees Cheesy

Wow....

I could only think that if Danny Weil had half the equipment, tents, water, etc., when he made his expedition to CI,he probably would have felt he was staying at Clipperton Resort!

CQ Serenade words and music by the late Maurice Durieux VE2QS and VE2BR, played by VE2QS and his orchestra, vocal by Joyce Hahn. Produced around 1951.

From the webpage http://www.angelfire.com/planet/amateur-radio-guy/CQ_Serenade.html along with a story from K8SB:

If they activate a rare one that I need, I would ____________________......

Be shocked that, given all the resulting drama, finger-pointing, etc. that anyone would sign on with the group.  But understanding that it's the operators' choice, I would happily work them and patiently wait for the next one...

For the time being I'm living vicariously thru everyone here on this topic...last week a 40+ pine took out my MA8040V(+30) and half of my reversible 15M inverted V array!  Replacement parts on the vertical are 1-2 weeks out and I've yet to get the time to rehang the VK "leg" of the array.

Keep the info and stories comin'!

I seem to recall Paul,  N6PSE, hinting that there might be something in the works from the Intrepid Group.

I'm not sure if that means that regular stamps for Greece won't work.

Nope... I tried 2 times with the correct amount of Greek postage and didn't get any return.  Once I enclosed $5 I got the card within a month.

Doug:

Take it from the guy who tried 3 times to get a QSL from Monk Apollo, GS work best.

I tried Greek  postage twice, and then after reading that others were enclosing $ with their cards, I stuck $5 ( i know, a bit extravagant, but heck, I wanted that QSL!) in with my third card and within 3-4 weeks had his card.

I don't know why the SASEs didn't work, unless Mt Athos has its own postage.  Try the GS, I'll bet you get a card pretty quick

15  eHam Forums / DXing / RE: What was your most memorable DX contact? on: January 17, 2013, 09:58:34 AM
There are several that come to mind for me ....

FT5XO & ZL9HR -- I managed to work both after they then they called CQ/QRZ after telling their pile ups to QRX.

3Y2GV & 3Y1EE -- The 1st Peter1 expedition

7O6T  -- Just for being 7O6T.  I never thought I'd hear 7O much less work it.

VK9ZM, Mellish Reef 1989 -- Now this one stands out for what I had to do to get the QSO.  I was in the middle of my 2nd year of chiropractic school in Portland, OR and knew Mellish was going to come up when the semester resumed.  Figuring I had a darned good shot at them, I managed to string up a slanted 15M inverted V on the roof my housemate's house.  The apex was at a small TV mast and the ends tied off at the gutters.  I borrowed an instructor's FT-707 and a friend's general coverage receiver (a Grundig, I think).  The receive antenna was a hunk of speaker wire thrown out the window.  One hand was doing double duty tuning the receiver and turning down the volume control (or flipping the mute switch ... can't recall) and the other banging out my call ... on a straight key.  By luck, divine intervention, or sharply honed DXing skill, I managed to snag a QSO with that setup.
