46  eHam Forums / Mods And Repairs / Yaesu FT-8500 Deviation Adjustment ?? on: January 11, 2004, 09:04:08 PM
Hello.  I have looked in the rig and I do not see a pot to turn up the deviation.  Is it a software setting via a hidden menu??

Thanks,
Randy AB9GO

48  eHam Forums / QRP / MFJ 9420X and like QRP SSB radios on: December 29, 2003, 04:01:27 PM
Hello.  I purchased a like new 9420X with the CW adaptor for $135.00 on Ebay working 100%.  They work well for what the are.  Dial calibration is no worse than a Alda or an old Swan.  I placed a calibration graph on top of mine and I know with reasonable certainty the frequency the rig is on.  Now if you take the radio out in very cold or hot weather, the calibration sheet will be next to worthless.  Many people out there like the digital VFO's and the accuracy of a digital display.  It is a good 2nd radio.  Many a person has gotten started on HF with worse rigs than the 9420X.  A nice thing is the radio is built with all off the shelf components.  Not a custom chip in sight!  I would not buy a new one since they are too expensive for what you get.

Good luck,
Randy AB9GO

p.s. check out my review of the 9420X under KB8ASO.
49  eHam Forums / Antennas and Towers and more / Attic antenna idea's for HT to reduce lighting ris on: January 26, 2003, 07:04:51 PM
Get a mobile mag mount antenna 1/4 to 5/8 wave and stick it on the top of your refrigerator.  You may be suprised at how well it will work.  If it is still not good enough, mount it on at least a 19" X 19" piece of sheet metal in the atic.  Unless you are in an RF hole the fridge will get the job done and you will not have to climb into the atic.  I have used this type of antenna off and on for years and I get very good results.

Hello.  Has anyone found the source of the extremely strong birdie on 146.805 - 146.810?  Any ideas on how to fix other than a hammer!

51  eHam Forums / Boat Anchors / 6LB6 -- GE Only??? on: October 30, 2002, 02:09:22 PM
You can check on the tube for the RMA #.  GE's was 5-188 if I remember correctly.  If the Zenith has that code on it, it was made for Zenith by GE.  The Realistic tube will most likely have all the original markings removed and the Realistic name reprinted on the envelope.  Radio Shack got tubes from anywhere and everywhere, rebranded and reboxed them.

Hello.  I am still looking for a Cushman CE-6A service monitor manual.  It must be the "6A" version.  A CE-6 will not work.

Thanks,

55  eHam Forums / Elmers / EMP protection on: May 31, 2002, 01:30:41 PM
With the current instability of India and Pakistan and threat of nuclear terrorism, what is the best way to prep, store  and a solid state emergency radio setup against EMP.    Metal container?

57  eHam Forums / Misc / Ebay radio prices too high on: March 02, 2002, 03:38:25 PM
If you think Ebay prices are too high, don't shop there.  The thing I hate is the Ebay professional dealers that go to the local fest and buy to resell.  This only makes prices higher.  What is the motivation to sell at the local hamfest if you know your items are being resold on Ebay for more money?   Right!  You sell your stuff on Ebay and skip the hamfest.  We lost one hamfest this year and I expect that more will follow next year.  There is no reason to go anymore as anything that is any good ends up on Ebay one way or other.  All that is left is junk or goods that will not even sell on Ebay for the stupidly high prices asked.  How many hamfests have you gone to and have not seen one or two HF rigs or modern handhelds for sale?  Ebay has ruined hamfests.

59  eHam Forums / Elmers / Ham radio with a pacemaker? on: January 28, 2002, 11:10:22 AM
The problem with asking the manufacturer ( St. Johns ) is that all that they ask is that you do not hold on to the antenna when you transmit?!  Seems a little to liberal to me.  What I am looking for is if you have one of these devices for a while, how many times has RF caused a false operation of your device and what were the circumstances when it did.  My wife does not like the idea of it going off ( supposed to feel like a mule kick in the chest ) for no good reason.  I would like for her to have a 2 meter in the car and a 2 meter hand held for emergency communication as the local cell coverage is very spotty and unreliable in the county where we live with no improvement in sight.  She would feel better hearing from people that actually have a device and have real world experience with it.  The maker is not much help here.
