eHam Forums / Boat Anchors / Microwave oven transformer as a modulation xfrmr?
|
on: September 21, 2006, 10:02:57 AM

I'm just throwing out a wild idea. AM is a very new interest of mine, and I am cramming on designs and modulation methods. I knew before asking that a MOT is nothing like an audio output xformer... which is what I gather to be a close relative of a mod xfrmr. I also know that just because something doesnt make a lot of sense, its no reason to think someone hasn't tried it! 73, Jason kf6pqt

If you have T-Mobile, you can get a GPRS connection cheaply, but it its SLOWWWWWW... Like 100kbit/s It may sound faster than your dialup AOHell, but note there is more operation overhead+ interferance than you'd find on a modem dialup connection.
Unless you really need it, it isnt worth it. Its nice tho, if you carpool in a metropolitan area, to surf the web uninterrupted from the passenger seat!
One time going out to the desert, I made my girlfreind drive, and I played on the internet, and the connection was constant from Burbank, CA to Riverside... only stopped there as I was done surfing! (They like to keep the cell towers by the freeways so yuppie idiots in Land Rovers can cause accidents.)
But, I dumped the service as unnecessary.

Hi all, I'm sure my effort is highly redundant, but what the heck, its all in the name of fun with old gear. Especially when its gear thats so undesireable by collectors, us common folks can afford it! (And in my particular case, rescue a bunch of it from the trash and put it on the air!) I started the EICO7 group mainly to honor my collection of the infamous "Seven Drifty Three," but discussion of any EICO stuff is welcome, and all are welcome to join. I had a slinky dipole on 40, and it was several feet above my rooftop at its lowest point of sag. No appreciable noise problem, but put it this way, I put up an inverted V and am much happier with it!

eHam Forums / Boat Anchors / More questions about Swan 6146 conversion

Orrrr, was that the $5 6jh8 instead of the 6146?
7360=6lq6, correct?
I found this, from anothe eham post:
********************************* The 6JH8 can be retrofitted into any transceiver employing the 7360 tube. There are no circuit changes other than the tube socket pin wiring (see chart below) all other components remain the same. This requires all pins except the two filament pins rewired.
7360 FUNCTION 6JH8 PIN 1 CATHODE PIN 7 PIN 2 SCREEN GRID PIN 3 PIN 3 CONTROL GRID PIN 6 PIN 4 FILAMENT PIN 4 PIN 5 FILAMENT PIN 5 PIN 6 PLATE #1 PIN 8 PIN 7 PLATE #2 PIN 9 PIN 8 DEFLECTOR #1 PIN 2 PIN 9 DEFLECTOR #2 PIN 1
The balanced modulator tube should have a metal shield installed to prevent interaction with stray magnetic fields within the cabinet.

eHam Forums / Boat Anchors / More questions about Swan 6146 conversion

Hi, I read the threads on the Swan 350 problems and the mention of of a 6146b conversion with great interest.
I have a Swan 500cx that I got with a load of really ratty boatanchor gear, will be getting around to cleaning it up very soon. No power supply, but I intend to use the Eico 723 (721, or so) power supply to run it.
So, is the 6lq6 to 6146b just a straight across swap? new sockets, and rewire to the corresponding pins?
Any websites/articles/etc discussing the conversion?
I dont know if my 6lq6's are any good, obviously, but I've got a lot of good 6146's in shoeboxes!
Thanks and 73, Jason

Ok... yes, I have haggled with them before. So, how do I get them to sell me the three 10-foot sections of lightweight aluminum tower that have been there for over 4 years that are supposedly "movie props?" -Jason kf6pqt

WB2WIK,
In an above post, I was referring directly to my most recent visit to Apex last tuesday. Granted, I didnt have a lot of time to shop, but I saw few large transformers there.
Bear in mind too, that place must have a 14 BILLION dollar inventory, based upon their astronomical asking prices! Not too ham-freindly, IMHO. I'd be ahead of the game ordering from Peter Dahl, vs: Apex.

That's one of my problems... lack of meaty transformers. I have a couple of the "old color tv" variety, but those wont do it. I live in the Los Angles area, and sadly the once-great TRW swapmeet is mainly computer crap. I could easily count the vendors there selling actually selling ham gear on my fingers. Hopefully this Saturday's swap is better.
Also, some of the oldschool electronics surplus places are nearby, but they're either picked clean of the good stuff, or "No, you cant buy that, we lease stuff like that out for movie props."
I'm guessing that any large trnsformer thats fallen out of the hands of hams has been melted down and sent to China long ago.
However, I frequently grab microwave ovens from the curb on trash day!

Yeah, forgot to mention I have a "toy" machine shop in the garage that can handle all the socket/chassis fab no problem.
What i find especially interesting on the radars site is the use of microwave oven transformers for the plate voltage. Anybody else tried this?
I have the QEX pdf referenced, if anybody else is interested in it.
