31  eHam Forums / DXing / RE: Why should I continue to QSL via the buro? on: February 06, 2013, 03:52:21 PM
You can always put "I QSL ONLY with SAE/$$" on your QRZ.com page.

Unless you make it LARGE text and BOLDED, filling half the screen, in 95% or more of the cases, this won't work because people usually do not read the fine print. I know of several folks who are managers for DX and clubs that plainly state 'they do not use the buro' yet I get hundreds of cards a year for each of them from people who don't bother to read or never bother to check. Those buro cards go in the round file Sad It's a shame but that's the process. If you send a card via the buro and get no reply, chances are it ended up in the trash. There is NO method by which to return the cards to the sender with any info as to why on them. Outgoing buro cards are a 'pay to play' venture and us buro volunteers don't pay to send cards back ... neither does the ARRL.

What do you do when using the DX Engineering plate when the bolt (that's never been removed) hangs up in the groove on the plate while your in the middle of walking the antenna up or down?  Shocked Shocked Shocked

Don't know ... has never happened here.

I use the hand tighten tool-less knobs that DX Eng sells for their tiltover plate to tighten/loosen for tilting over a 6BTV and has never ever failed me in over 2 years. Won't say it can't happen but highly doubtful given the top quality of the components and design. Just my 2 cents from here in the windy Mojave Desert.

34  eHam Forums / Clubs / RE: Leadership styles in clubs... on: January 17, 2013, 09:29:47 AM

For a lot of people, the club is a social opportunity, not necessarily a place or venue to get things done.

We refer to those types as "cookie munchers" as all they do (usually) is show up to meetings to get free munchies and then complain about the way the club is run ........

35  eHam Forums / DXing / RE: Vertical & 1.5Kw VS Tribander & 200w on: January 09, 2013, 08:34:11 AM
Bottom line .... you use what you have and hope for the best or 'invest' more $$$ and add capabilities.

With my vertical setup, I have found that by modifying my 6BTV by extending the main antenna mast above the 30M trap and adding a cap hat (DX Eng Hot Rodz setup and replacing the 80M Super resonator with the 40M Super) I can hear better on 80M and 40M with the vertical and results indicate that my TX signal has better presence since I am logging more Qs than before. The bandwidth is wider too, appx 100Khz on 40M and 50+khz on 80M - both tuned at the low end of the band.

I would really like the chance to try for BS7H on any band using my current vertical config against my Force 12 C3S at 13M high. Someday when I move to the retirement QTH, I plan on having some 'real' antennas Smiley

36  eHam Forums / Digital / RE: Performance Advantages of Sound Card Interface? on: January 08, 2013, 05:42:03 PM
I've used everything from an expensive Soundblaster EMU soundcard system (tinkering with SDR) to the cheap $5 all-in-one soundcard (spkr/mic) on a USB thumbdrive style device and found no difference in 99% of the uses. Like was said, unless you are chasing extremely low level signals like EME or WSPR, you probably won't see any difference either. Get a cheap $20 Soundblaster compatible card and go for it. I have 3 of these in my shack PC for doing multiple bands at once on multiple rigs. Works great and cheap to replace if needed. I use a Soundblaster X51 device for JT65-HF and it works flawlessly. I have logged QSOs where I could not even hear the other station's audio yet the soundcard/PC decoded it at -25dB.

37  eHam Forums / Contesting / RE: Which RTTY contesting software do you prefer? on: January 08, 2013, 05:31:58 PM
Well I'll be #3 for N1MM and MMTTY ops. I find it to be foolproof, streamline and very intuitive to setup and use. You should have no problem in using N1MM with HRD. While I am not sure if the 2 programs will interface together in realtime, I do know that I use DX Lab Suite and there is a N1MM to DXLAB bridge software app that provides realtime data transfer between logging with N1MM during a contest and having all the N1MM log entries be in place in my DXKeeper logbook at the end of the contest without any issues of exporting/importing an ADIF file. I would suppose that HRD may have something like that since everyone seems to think it is Numero UNO in the logging world! If not, I guess that's something to be upgraded in a later rev?

Why is there an ad from leggings.com on this site?  It's obnoxious-looking and doesn't seem to be a good fit. I'd be glad to pay eHam what leggings.com is paying you, but...you guessed it...I'm broke!

Pay for a subscription to eHAM and you WON'T see the Leggings ad! It won't cost you an arm or a LEG for the subscription. I have one and I don't see any ads at all !!!

I'm a paid subscriber, and I see them. Are you sure you don't have some other form of ad-blocking going on?

Yes, I'm logged in.

-- Tom

Not sure why I don't see them but I get the same results on all the computers (3 of them; 2 XP PCs, 1 Win7 PC and 1 Android Smartphone) I use to log into eHAM with and they all (PCs) run Symantec Endpoint Protection software. One thing I noticed is the PCs do NOT show any ads but the smartphone does even when logged in. I am using Google Chrome on phone (Android Jellybean 4.1.1 OS) with AVG Antivirus/AntiMalware s/w and latest Firefox browser on PCs. On the PC's, I don't see any ads or other nefarious displayed items, only eHAM ham radio info and also do NOT have any undisplayed 'red X' placeholders either?

Maybe your browesr or anti-malware/virus software is not blocking the ads?

Trip - KT4WO

Curious, why?? If you approach the problem prepared to fight the idiots who get their jollies by putting the viruses and junk out there in the first place, you should not have too.

I run an OS install until the next OS relaease requires a upgrade (lack of support or need for functions) at which time I do a fresh install on a new HD. My PC's stay on 24x7 and sometimes for weeks on end without a reboot. I run all the required patches, hardware firewall/router and Symantec Endpoint Protection antivirus on each one.

You should not need to rebuild anything if done correct the first time around. Also if you're on dialup or an extremely slow connection, like you inferred, I'd suggest you look into upgrading your ISP. Broadband/cable is almost free nowadays. We have 6 computers networked at home and even with streaming video on multiple machines simultaneously, one hardly notices any impact.

It's well worth the minor cost to have fast internet.

41  eHam Forums / Computers And Software / RE: N3FJP interface with TS-590S on: December 14, 2012, 10:31:47 AM
I run this with a 940 Kenwood. Very pleased with the automatic frequency change. and  logging ALL  info instantly, with one click of the mouse.  However... I to experienced difficulty.  I went to settings, then rig interface, selected kenwood 2, you might try each one kenwood and or kenwood 2.  I then was forced to try each comm port, I use 4.  Then baud rate, I use 4.8 Then Parity, I use None,  Then data bits, I use 8,  Then stop bits, I use 2, Then connection power, I use DTR,  Then Radio Polling Rate, I use 2 sec.  Then Mode by:  I use Rig.  Now this is not as bad as it sounds.  I did however spend some time searching for all the correct combinations, PITA. "When" you get it write it down!  I have had to re boot this once or twice for some reason and having recorded all the settings is golden.  Good luck hope this helped.  keep us posted.  It is worth it IMO.  73

Kenwood has historically been 4800 Baud, 8 data bits, no parity and 2 stop bits. I also have DTR and RTS both set to ON for the port in use (COM1 in my case) in my DX Lab Suite Commander and N1MM contesting software (I tried the N3FJP software years ago and found it to be lacking for my needs). Using any other data rate settings for the Kenwood radio interface will probably give you a load of gobble-gook and not work. However I am not sure if the TS-590 is adjustable or not. My TS-2000 is configurable at other rates but my old TS-940 was fixed at 4800,8,n,2.

42  eHam Forums / DXing / RE: The other side of the pileup... Needless duplicate contacts - enough already! on: December 11, 2012, 08:57:07 AM
When people don't hear a call sign within 2-3 QSOs they tend to work first, worry later.

That's just the point..... you should NOT work someone UNLESS you know their callsign. Doing so makes things even worse because now, you have to ask for a callsign and if you don't, expecting the DX to give a callsign and they don't, now you have to wait and HOPE you can get it in the next few QSOs or call AGAIN. The DX Code, which is totally voluntary but highly recommended by most, recommends that you know the callsign BEFORE answering.

I have heard more than once, in BIG pileups, some schmuck who has a mega signal tell the DX something akin to "Thanks for coming back to me, Harry. You're still 59 plus like you were yesterday and the day before when I worked you here. Glad you're having fun there and <blah> <blah> <blah>". It's like they have to show the world that they can work the DX station whenever they want to.

43  eHam Forums / DXing / RE: QSOs per year, etc. on: December 11, 2012, 08:45:59 AM

Then, you have hams who ONLY chase DX, like myself. I very very seldom ragchew (waste of time,  IMHO) and dont really care much about bandfills. I am trying for 8BDXCC, and just about there except for 80m, which is at around 55 now. 5BWAZ is in the works, but a ways off.

Believe it or not, since logging my FIRST DX contact in 2006, I have only logged 2188 QSOs, TOTAL.
Assuming 3 bands, 2 modes for my 311 DXCC count, that only leaves around 300 QSOs in 6+ years which were not dedicated DXCC QSOs.

73, Gene AF3Y

You've got me beat there, Gene. Since December 2002 I have only logged 2041 QSOs, TOTAL.

My DXCC count is currently 254, still waiting for cards from P29NI, 7P8D, and T30PY.

Current log entries are just shy of 11K. Since changing calls on 19 Feb 2009, I have logged 8,523 Q's and yes many of them were from CW and RTTY contests and a bunch from 6M Es propogation, which I do a lot of in the late spring / eraly summer chasing 6M grids. My DXCC count is 252 and waiting on only a couple of cards or LoTW confirmations (sometime in the future Smiley )

For what its worth, LOTW now has a LIVE logbook queue status page!

http://www.arrl.org/logbook-queue-status

Interesting data there. Every two hours they fall 1 hour 40 minutes farther behind.

The other 20 minutes is spent calculating how far behind they are Smiley
