1  eHam Forums / Elmers / RE: XLR Switch on: June 10, 2013, 07:11:19 AM
Since you already in the world of xlr mics have you considered using a small mix board to manage this function ?  The input of your mic into a channel and then either the pan channel strip function or a  left right buss assignment to the radios would take care of this need.
2  eHam Forums / Antennas and Towers and more / RE: Rohn 20/25 Weight on: June 10, 2013, 06:24:40 AM
Ed,  Great question.  Given the timing for field day the ARRL just published an article in the June issue page 67.
What suprised me was that the force that is exerted on the ground point that is hinged is much greater than the sum total of mast/tower and antenna.

Example 160 lbs of mast and 40 llbs of antenna exerts a for of 658 lbs at the hinge point and requires a lift of 192 lbs at midpoint.  Geometry and Physics in action !

Just heard him on 15 meters - still though unable to break thru the EU wall of stations not to mention the stations that are calling/tuning on his recv freq!  What Din and the spread is proably 15KC
4  eHam Forums / Antennas and Towers and more / RE: How to remove a gable vent (22" octagonal)? on: March 11, 2013, 05:54:47 PM
Are you looking to slip some wiring / coax thru ?  If so most have a bird /bee screen that can be compromised and the louvers allow more then enough space for most cabling.
Otherwise a dryer vent can provide a nice entry point or even consider entering under the eaves through the ventilated soffit.

Recently transacted business with Jan on a Linemaster Clipper foot pedal to key my rig.  Excellent communication, prompt shipping, well packaged.
6  eHam Forums / Antennas and Towers and more / RE: Ham Antenna Installers in the Chicago, IL Area on: January 05, 2013, 09:37:53 AM
Glenn,

I would suggest looking at a four legged roof tower and stay away from the tripods.  I researched many options prior to installing my Mosley TA33jr on my roof top and in that process came to the conclusion that none of the tripods available met the needs for a Tribander similar to mine or yours which is very close in design.

The dead weight that you mention isn't the concern it's the lateral forces generated by torque during wind. These forces are a function of the square footage of the antenna, its' profile, mast height and local conditions.

Roof decking alone is not strong enough, the underpinning in the attic is essential to a successful install.

For research / I would point you to a couple of links

I find that RFConnection www.therfc.com via Joel 1-800-783-2666 out of Maryland provides excellent service, price.  Give him a call and discuss your needs and he can offer options that should exceed your needs and expectations.  He offers nearly 50 types of coax as well as hardline, twin lead , parts and connectors.

Belden coax that I use for HF on two of my primary antennas

I was browsing EBay and found this listing, at first I didn't figure out what it was!

Good idea from the builder.

I use Snapfish and Shutterfly for photohosting.  They frequently send offers for 1 cent prints at order levels of 100 - 300 prints.  So my plan is to take a color photo, use computer software for the typical info and start using these are the color QSL's.  Most likely have to use a Sharpy type marker to write on the photo paper - still a good way to go color QSL

10  eHam Forums / Antennas and Towers and more / RE: Hustler 4BTV Overhaul on: November 08, 2012, 04:11:40 AM
I replaced the grey trap covers on my preowned 4btv w ones from dx engineering, I had to retune the antenna since I used about 500 feet of radial wire.  Great tuning instructions on their web site.

My black trap covers fit extremely tight so I didn't use a rtv, however I did use never seize on connections as stainless and I have had bad experiences in the past with cold weld/galling.

Great antenna, only wish it had the WARC bands without add ons...
11  eHam Forums / Antennas and Towers and more / Post Sandy Inspection on: October 31, 2012, 07:34:01 AM
Now that Sandy has moved through the SNJ section, I've had the chance to perform hands on and visual inspection of my outside UHF/VHF and HF antennas.  Thankfully no damage was sustained to either the Mosley TA33jr or the Hustler 4BTV. Hope all other amateurs in the path had similar outcomes!

Keep in mind a couple of tips;

Water intrusion into coax is possible given driving winds, check SWR for changes
Check mechanics of your antenna and any guys for sagging or signs of stress after such winds
Inspect ground points and junction boxes
Ensure rotators are able to move freely and without binding
Visually inspect with binoc's for missing end caps, elements, top cap spiders
Any threatening branches nearby to antenna elements or wire

Above all stay safe as surfaces are splippery when wet or covered with leaves.

I've recently ordered a Radio Oasis G5RV 105 foot length from Frank @ CheapHam and couldn't be happier with the service and sale.  Frank has always provided insight into the various products he carries and is willing to locally deliver into Central NJ to boot !

Competitive price point and good stock.  Cheapham the place for me ! Smiley
13  eHam Forums / Antennas and Towers and more / RE: Where to buy aluminum for antenna elements? on: October 25, 2012, 11:46:07 AM
I useD Fazios in New Casle Delaware for the metal I needed for my last antenna project.  They are a regional supplier and had anything you could imagine in various forms and sizes.   Check your yellow pages for metal suppliers and give them a call.  If Not try Onlinemetals.com as they where my choice untill I found Fazios.  http://www.shopjfi.com/

I've had the oppurtunity to work the AT Golden Packet event with Bob Bruninga over the last years.  In the first attempt we used his Pirus with a single wire earth return system.  Worked fine, however retrieving the wire from the brush and trees on the mountain was a pain.

He has posted many articles on this topic - check out the following links;

15  eHam Forums / Antennas and Towers and more / RE: Diamond SRH77CA vs Comet SMA24 on: October 24, 2012, 06:30:26 AM
I'm using the SRH77CA on my Yaesu VX8 HT for nearly two years now and have only good experiences with it.  I travel worldwide with this in my briefcase and it takes all the flexing I've given it.  I use it for portable ops with simplex from mountain tops using APRS and locally with my WARG repeater w/ good results.

Much better results then with the stock Yaesu ant.

My only caution to you would be be careful with torquing the chassis mounting point on the HT since that will be the failure point.
