31  eHam Forums / Antennas and Towers and more / Inverted L Balun on: July 24, 2012, 06:37:06 PM
Have RG213 running from shack to base of tree where I am going to run the vertical leg of an Inverted L. Antenna wire is 14 gauge, single stranded insulated THHN
and I am using above ground radials.
I plan to use a 1:1 balun between the coax and antenna/radials.
This may seem like a dumb question but want to be certain...  here goes. I would hook the antenna wire to one side of balun and then hook the radials to the other side of the balun???

Tnx and 73

So installed as a slightly inverted V, to allow for the sway of the trees, having center at say 45', still use 4:1 of go to 3:1?

Tnx

Mike- thanks. My OCF dipole in question is about 50 ft off ground. Does height above ground effect balun rating. So would 4:1 or 6:1 be better?

Walter - thanks for advice. If I could I'd like to use the antenna as cut and just replace the components in the "two tubes". The top one is the Balun and the bottom one Radio Works calls a line isolator. Collectively they refer to this piece of coax that hangs down as a "vertical radiator". So if I replace the top balun with a 6:1 balun, I am thinking the bottom tube is just some sort of RF Choke. Wonder if the Group has any ideas on details of what to replace it with?

My second Radio Works Carolina Windom 80M Compact (folded) OCF dipole just stopped working after about 14 months, first one I had lasted about 18 months. I lived in Savannah, Ga where ambient temps do get quite hot. Not willing to plunk down $ for a third. When it worked it did quite well on 80M - 6M, and fit my lot and restricted neighborhood well. From reading eHam reviews on this antenna others have had problems with water intrusion and heat damage to the two non- wire components (balun and line isolator) Wondering if:
1) anyone has rebuilt  one of these Carolina Windoms with purchased or homemade parts (balun and "line isolator)
2) Any recommendations on other commercial OCF Dipoles that would cover 80M- 6M

I am using a SignalinkUSB. I did get MM-SSTV to work. I had the wrong sound card selected with the program and incorrect port. all squared away now and working fine. Now I just have to figure out how to do templates.

Ken -- i did download MM-SSTV but can't get it to properly control my FT-450. It turns Tx on and off but no power out.  Should the radio be in USB or Data Mode??

Well thanks again to all who offered their experience with the Anderson Power Poles. I found that in the process of crimping the contact, it was getting  slightly bent and I was not pushing it far enough into the connectors. So I have learned a lot from you all, thanks much.

Appreciate all the replies. My problem is that the connectors after assembly don't stay together and I think as Ron points out it probably because I am not pushing the contacts all the way into the connector. I will go back and inspect and check to see if the contacts are all the way in or got bent some how and thus aren't clicking together.

Maybe I mis-stated the question. It is not the red and black
(clipped side by side) not staying together that is the problem. It is that the black to black  connectors that won't stay together. Seems to be hit and miss with my technique. On the current project, the red to red click together and stay together, the blk-blk keep coming apart.

Have made a few connections with Anderson Power Poles that conduct just fine but don't "click" or "lock" together. Anyone got an idea of what I am doing wrong in assembling them/adjust or how do get the ones I have to mate properly.

My nephew is a new Ham, located in the mid-west, while I'm in south Georgia, so hands on help difficult. He acquired a used Icom -745. I am not familiar with this rig, but wondering if anyone knows if it's possible to work any digital modes, such as PSK-31.
Is there any way to hook an external interface to this radio??
