I think it was Mark Twain that made some comment about the "rumors of my death have been greatly exaggerated." Packet radio is alive and well with some ARES groups in CA. Using the Outpost software, it is perfect for passing ICS-213 information. Don't give up on packet. Besides the APRS side of it, there are other uses as well. That cell phone is a great idea, until it doesn't work!!
I have a Yeasu FT-857 in my Peterbilt. I have programmed 3 memories to scan a segment of a band. When I select a memory to scan and push the PMS button, it jumps to another memory instead of the one I have selected. Also, sometimes it scans all three of the memories instead of just staying on the one. This problem is pretty frustrating. Sometimes it works OK, other times it is like it has a mind of its own.
