1  eHam Forums / Misc / Help Needed With Research Project on: April 10, 2013, 04:51:24 AM
I need help with a small project for a Social Informatics
course.

I need to identify a small group (10-25) of people by a common thread and gather
a bit on information about cell phone usage. For the group, I have chosen fellow amateur radio operators, and all that I ask is that you answer the following
questions and email the answers back to me ab2rc@ab2rc.net.

Age & Gender -

Do you own a cell phone?

If you do not have a cell phone, what is the MAIN reason that you do not have
one.

Is your phone considered to be a smartphone?

If you have a plain vanilla phone is there a reason why?

How often do you use your cell for calls?

How often do you use your cell for texting?

If the answer for the above two questions is never - why?

optional - tell me anything specific about your cell usage, have you noticed any
usage patterns on your own?

Thanks in advance. You will not be identified in the study, and all help will be
greatly appreciated.

2  eHam Forums / Computers And Software / RE: FLGIGI BEHAVING STRANGELY on: March 12, 2013, 09:09:34 AM

We just installed FLDIGI into a iMAC G5 and did the complete configuration... just like it is on another iMac we have here. The problem I am encountering is that when I go to save the Configuration Files, I do not see the normal file save panel with the options for selecting where one wishes to save the file. I took a look at the files area for FLDIGI and see the file ( fldigi_def.xml ) which according to the FLDIGI Help Site... is the correct name of the configuration file. We do not know why the prompts are not showing after the save command and the files are not being saved. When we re-boot the Computer and open FLDIGI, its the default settings and not my changes.

It should have been saved in ~/.fldigi which is a hidden directory in your home directory.
Do you have the finder set to reveal hidden files/directories on the iMac where it is not visible?

3  eHam Forums / Elmers / RE: The 'Impossibility' of One-Way Propagation on: December 12, 2012, 07:33:41 AM
They hear you, but you don't hear them.

Consider the takeoff angle of both antennas - you may have a lower takeoff angle, and they are getting the signal on the first hop, they may have a higher angle, and the signal take multiple hops to get to your qth. By the time the signal arrives at your end, it may be too weak to receive.

The reverse is possible also, a lower takeoff angle at their end, may cause the signal to skip right over you.

I was able to connect yesterday from this computer, unable to connect now - getting same message you are. The problem is at their end, try again later.
5  eHam Forums / Misc / RE: Storing Radio Operating Manauls on an Android Tablet on: September 21, 2012, 05:27:19 AM
Ditto on the Kindle mainly due to the insane long battery life.
I get about 10 days on a charge with the wifi/3g turned on and about a month if I leave them off.

The newer, better quality pdfs render much better than older ones that are just scanned versions of the original documents.

6  eHam Forums / Computers And Software / RE: Logging programs for Linux? on: July 12, 2012, 04:58:44 AM

DXLab runs on Linux; here's how.

   73,

       Dave, AA6YQ

Not quite, doing it this way, you are still running in Windows, with Windows running under Linux as a VM.

Since the original poster is asking about Linux, I would imagine that he does not want to use Windows at all (unless forced to)....

Before going to exclusively Macs I was using jLog http://jlog.org/index.htm under Linux. it is in Java and works under Windows, Linux, and OSX.

7  eHam Forums / Licensing / RE: FCC dismissed vanity call application. Why? on: June 28, 2012, 05:19:09 AM
Actually, those are reserved for hams with a MAILING address in Alaska.  The station doesn't actually have to be in Alaska (HINT HINT).

Well....

You could get a PO Box & remailing service out of Alaska but that would enable other stations to get credit for Alaska in DXCC & WAS, as there would be no way to show that the original poster's station was actually in NJ instead of where the license says he should be.

8  eHam Forums / Computers And Software / RE: TROUBLE WITH FIREFOX on: April 30, 2012, 04:31:49 AM
It won't matter which browser you use the url http://start.mozilla.org/firefox?client+firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official does not exist. This is a change on the mozilla server, and has nothing to do with the firefox browser itself.

Just set the homepage to http://start.mozilla.org and it will work just like it did before.
9  eHam Forums / CW / RE: GMail Tap on: April 04, 2012, 05:36:47 AM
It might have started as a April's Fool gag, but it was actually implemented for Android phones

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.martynhaigh.mailtap

It can be used for input to any app that needs a keyboard, just change the default input method.

10  eHam Forums / VHF / UHF / RE: Compact "purse size" 2M HT? on: April 03, 2012, 04:52:51 AM
Here is another option -
If the repeaters she needs to use are on echolink, why not a smartphone with the echolink software? Versions for iPhone and Android are available. Since she is probably already carrying a phone it is one less thing to carry and she will be used to charging it so the dead battery problem won't be an issue.

11  eHam Forums / Misc / RE: HRD to cost: Why don't more Hams embrace the Open Source model? on: March 12, 2012, 09:10:32 AM
I have wondered about that myself. It seems to me that open source is more in the ham spirit & tradition of sharing information than the closed proprietary model is.

While there is some great open source ham software available, the majority seems to be closed. I think this has to do with the dominant model in the Windows software world. Like it or not, Windows is the biggest player for operating systems. Part of the problem might be that software development tools that come with the typical Linux install are not installed by default on Microsoft systems, and that the Windows version of a similar tool is not free. Perhaps it would be different if a C compiler and other development tools were included and installed by default on Windows 20+ years ago when Win 3.1 came out.

12  eHam Forums / Elmers / RE: Is your QSL card on the KA0XTT You*Tube Video? on: March 12, 2012, 08:06:45 AM
My card is in the last group on the second video.

Thanks to K2GW who pointed it out to me, otherwise I probably would not have looked at the video.

The videos are a bit long, and there are some very interesting looking cards on them.

13  eHam Forums / Misc / RE: Which new QRZ? on: February 15, 2012, 05:53:14 AM
I can see the difficulty of using your current call phonetics, they are sort of awkward. Of all the ones you listed I think PA9X - Papa Alfa 9 Xray rolls off of the tongue the easiest.
14  eHam Forums / Misc / RE: What do you do when you're not DXing? on: December 08, 2011, 04:52:04 AM
Work - Software developer for a major university

Not at work - Finishing a college degree that I last worked on in the late 80s. I figure, I am here anyway, easy commute after work (just move my car to a different parking lot), free tuition as an employee - I would be crazy not to, besides, going back to school when you are twice as old as most of the other students, older than many of the instructors, having some instructors that you have WORKED with professionally in the past is an eye opening Shocked experience.

When not actually my workplace (either working or going to school)  -
homebrewing - both kinds - beer & electronics
reading
watching old tv shows.

15  eHam Forums / Misc / RE: Will/How will the future Tech change the way we QRP ? on: November 11, 2011, 07:28:49 AM
I think one change is, we will gain the option to voice transmitted cw and receive it in voice or type by decoder?

Do commit, but not only on my post, but how you see future?

Great idea, probably not all that difficult to actually implement.
The decoder part is already available, all one would need to do is pipe the text output thru a text reader.

The other end (sending) would involve a speech recognition program, and pipe the output into a cw-keyboard

The tech is already available, only need to string the various parts together.

Taken a bit farther, the same could be done for any text digital mode also.
