eHam Forums / Computers And Software / RE: Is there any interesting in a Mac/Linux Ham Radio Deluxe Program?

Sure, although I'm running HRD on my Mac right now in a VMWare virtual machine and it's just fine.
I would be interested in a Linux/Ubuntu version. I like to think I would pay for it, but most of us Linux users are pretty tight about paying for software. I think it is a bit more than just being tight about paying for software. The combined 'do everything' program goes against the grain of 'do one thing, but it well' user philosophy of most Unix & Unix-like systems. What might work for Mac & Linux users is a set of individual programs with a common communications protocol between them.

Hi Mike: You may know of this one, Dreamweaver by Adobe. My sister is considering this web design program. Another ham web site also recommended Dreamweaver. I think it cost about $400.00. by itself. The cost is much more if you buy their suite of programs. 73, Chuck - AA5WG
I will recommend Dreamweaver also, you can get it for about $150 if you can wrangle a .edu email address somehow.

/* having been a programmer for about 30 years, I sympathize with you */ /* meaningful comments are great when you have to change it 2 years later */
Same here, but I started programming in Forth -- you usually need the comments 5 minutes after you wrote the code.

At age 48 I returned to college to finish off a degree started decades before. I was surrounded by 18-21 y/o youngsters. But they were nice to the old guy (me) and invited me to some of their parties. I arrived with a case of non screw top
I started going back @ 45, returning to school to finish a degree also. So far the experience has been great, but no keggers for me. Anyway, to get back on topic, would a stack of empty beer kegs make a very wideband vertical, or would it be the ultimate beverage antenna?

So I'm living in a dorm room (at a university you've heard of) until May. Because of a hectic last semester, I didn't have time to set up my shack, but this semester should be better.
Did you check to seed if your school has a ham radio club, and possibly a club station? If so, join up and use the schools gear and antennas.

There are some annoyances on HAM radios. My Yaesu FT-950 for example. It's preamps are called and IPO (internal optimization something?). When the preamps are off, the IPO lists it as being "on". When the preamps are one, the "on" light goes out, and preamp 1 or 2 illuminate. Why just not call the thing a preamp, and have it on for on and off for off, instlead of on for off?
One of my pet peeves also. IPO = Internal Preamp Off, so when it is on, the preamp is off. Why not just call it IP (Internal Preamp) and let it be really on or off, not off when it is on.

eHam Forums / Elmers / RE: FT-857 + Subaru Outback?

Thanks for the wonderful responses. I'm looking at a 2010/2011 Outback. The only cupholders are in the center console near the shifter.
I was planning to mount the radio itself in the back of the vehicle and the head somewhere up front. It seems that newer cars just don't have any spare room to install anything these days!
So you wouldn't recommend a cup holder for just the FT-857 head?
If the 2010/2011 has the cup holder in the console, you are probably OK (just get a plastic soda bottle, fill with plaster to weight it down and stick something in the wet plaster to hold the mount). The older models have a cup holder that slides in and out of the dash. It is barely strong enough to hold a full soda can.

Does anyone know where to get a cupholder mount to mount the head of an FT-857 in a cupholder?
I would like to install an FT-857 in a Subaru Outback but the dash/console leaves very little room to install anything without it "being in the way."
Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

What year Outback? Mine are a 1999 & a 2000, and I would hesitate to put anything heavier than a soda can in the cupholders that come out of the dash. I am thinking about putting a rig into my 99, I was going to make a wooden mount to stick into the the little spare change holder in the console to attach the control head to.

Have you ever seen the prices off Satellite internet? Its $60 per month for a pathetic 1mb connection and then they have the balls to limit you to 200mb per day, exceed that and your speed gets throttled down to Dialup speeds for the rest of the day I was a hughes net customer for 3 years and I can tell you first hand that the service Sucks! BTW it costs $200 for the equipment and the thing does not work well when it's raining. Your statement about waiting 2 weeks for Fios to come knockin, I am not sure if you meant that as a Joke but I can assure you that signing up for Hughes net is not going to cause Fios to come out to boonyville and spend a million dollars to wire up 30 or 40 houses I had HughesNet for 2 years other than the 200mb/day issue it was not really that bad. I tended to use it more between 2am & 6am local anyway, data xfer at that time did not count towards the 200mb. What happened in my area, was that Bell Atlantic had laid the fiber, and it sat dark for over 10 years. About 2 weeks after I finally got Hughes to install the sat dish, Verizon came around and started to connect homes up or Fios. When the Hughes contract was up, I switched.

OK, young hams! I'm an adult asking for YOUR help and advice.
I am Vice President of our local ham radio club. Our club has been approached by a Scoutmaster to help his Scouts get their Radio Merit Badges.
From an adult perspective, not a youth perspective Our local club & scout district have been doing it this way for the past 7 years and it has always worked well http://k2gw.tripod.com/radiomeritbadgeday/

Also, for some of us that have s-l-o-w internet dial up the 'new' ARRL site is painfully slow (yes, even in NE Ohio some of us still cannot get DSL or cable internet!).
Here is the quickest way to get dsl/cable internet even if it is not offered in your area. 1 - sign up for a two or more year contract with a satellite internet provider 2 - wait about 2 weeks, the cable/fios/dsl guys will be installing on your street

I have been using a wireless Logitech keyboard/mouse combo for quite some time. I have fewer rf problems with the wireless combo than I did with the wired version.
The only time I do have a problem is on 15m when the batteries in the keyboard are almost completely dead. Just keep a set of spare batteries handy and you should not have any problems.
