46  eHam Forums / Elmers / RE: Uses for non-contact laser thermometers on: September 14, 2010, 04:41:26 AM
I have seen them used to check the temp of 807's in a cooler. Smiley

I use one to spot check mash temp while homebrewing -- long before the 807's go into the cooler.

Other than the obvious mistake of trying to use needle nose pliers

Been there, done that !

Same here, but the right angle needle nose pliers work quite well for taking the rings off.

48  eHam Forums / Elmers / RE: Is this the only source for 1 x 1 calls? on: July 27, 2010, 04:37:15 AM
Sounds like W7W had an issue this year.
----------------------------------------------------
Yes it has.  Several.  But nothing was listed for the Lost Dutchman special event on Feb. 28th as in previous years....

Bill

Just a guess, but it might be a database issue, rather than something specific to W7W. There are no 1x1 calls registered for 2/28/2010 thru 3/5/2010. It looks like an entire week is missing from the database. I think that it is unlikely that there were no 1x1 calls in use for that entire week.

49  eHam Forums / Elmers / RE: ECHOMAC QUESTIONS on: July 23, 2010, 04:22:59 AM
Just after I bring it on I check the box for Online operation. In no more than 1 second I get a long list of Nodes over 4200 of them including my call listed very close to the end. When I attempt to connect to one of the Nodes/Stations the program spends about 2 minutes and initiates a disconnect.

This occurs when the correct ports are not open on your router take a look at the instructions for echolink at http://www.echolink.org/firewall_solutions.htm and at http://www.portforward.com/english/applications/port_forwarding/Echolink/Echolinkindex.htm the answer will be the same
50  eHam Forums / Antenna Restrictions / RE: Comet Vertical on: July 14, 2010, 04:59:45 AM
Ab2rc could you describe how exactly you removed the ganged toroid's from inside the container? A dremel tool perhaps.?..The antenna could be modified and used with conventional feed and an auto tuner, just wondering how you did the gutting and what you did to seal the canister afterwards.

I did not gut the canister, I just removed it, and it is still sitting on my basement workbench. I think there were 3 screws at the bottom that held it on, and one at the collar near the top.

The unun came from balun designs and was their 4:1 qrp model (not 9:1 as quoted above, brain fart when I typed that). They define qrp as 400W -- the biggest qrp I ever heard of...

The cb whip was attached to the top with a couple of hose clamps.

51  eHam Forums / Digital / RE: EchoMac on: June 25, 2010, 09:00:47 AM
This looks more like a network/router problem than a EchoMac problem. You probably do not have the correct port forwarding set up.

Take a look at  http://www.echolink.org/firewall_solutions.htm for possible solutions.

Ignore the fact that this is for the Windows software, the solution is the same, you will need to translate "winspeak" to real world "unix/macspeak", just follow the link to portforward.org and you should be OK.

52  eHam Forums / Antenna Restrictions / RE: Comet Vertical on: June 11, 2010, 04:19:37 AM
I just installed a Comet CHA 250BX rooftop vertical antenna (no radials) because my home is in an antenna restricted zone.  It blends in with the trees and has passed to "smell test" of local landscapers and gardeners.  The product reviews on this product are good but so far all I can say is that it is an excellent receiving antenna - I can hear just about everyone.  However, the transmit function leaves something to be desired.  For now I'm stuck with it and wonder how other Hams deal with compromise antennas like this one.

I picked one of these up at a hamfest a few years ago and mounted it on a pole at 15ft. It worked, but not all that great.

Improvement #1 came when I ground mounted it and added a few radials.

Improvement #2 was when I removed the matching section, added a 9:1 unun, more radials and increased the length to 31' by adding  a 102" cb whip to the top. Now I have the typical 31' vertical.

53  eHam Forums / Elmers / RE: Buddistick in carry-on? on: June 08, 2010, 04:50:07 AM
There is nothing remotely close on the TSA no-fly list, but my experience is that even the TSA personnel rarely know what is/isn't on the list.

Personally I think the TSA personnel make up what is on/not on the list on a whim.

What I would do is pack everything up, and FedEx/UPS Overnight my gear to my destination, and make arrangements with the hotel that I will be receiving a package on the day I will be arriving.

54  eHam Forums / Elmers / RE: How to tune MFJ-949E? on: February 17, 2010, 04:35:50 AM
set to 300w

set antenna selector to tuned & whatever connector you antenna is connected to

set the transmitter and antenna knobs to midpoint

rotate the inductor knob to whatever position gets you the most background noise

key the transmitter in cw or am mode, and adjust the antenna/transmitter knobs to whatever position yields the lowest swr (where the 2 needles cross)
55  eHam Forums / Misc / RE: Seal Shield Washable GSM Phone With VHF Radio on: January 22, 2010, 12:17:32 PM
Phone with --
-Amateur Radio 2 meter Band
Very small market, smaller that the one with a vhf marine band radio

-MURS legal, license-free off network simplex
Great idea, but probably even a smaller market than the version with a 2m radio

-Fire Tone Out capability for EMS & fire service
Small market, but might work could, produced even charge a premium for this by selling directly to public service agencies.

-NOAA Weather Radio receive possibly with SAME alerting
I think this might have a good chance at success. Especially if the phone could automagically set the alert area based on gps location.
56  eHam Forums / Antenna Restrictions / RE: electrons4you 80 - 10 Meter HF Stealth Portable on: December 21, 2009, 04:57:41 AM
I have 2 of these, the 10-40 and the 10-80, both work well.

I usually use the 10-40 while portable with my ic703, the internal tuner tunes it anywhere in the specified range.

I use the 10-80 at home with a ft100 & a ldg z-100 tuner. The z100 can't find a match on 10, but it does find one on 160 (go figure), a manual tuner is able to match it on 10, so no problem there.
57  eHam Forums / Elmers / RE: Using a mike in car. on: December 17, 2009, 05:24:27 AM
There are 50 states in the US and likely 50+ variations on the laws that apply.

Here in NJ the use on any "Electronic Communication Device" is prohibited -- but Amateur Radio is specifically exempted.

You can see waterfall prints and get audio samples at http://www.w1hkj.com/Fldigi.html just click on the various modes for descriptions
59  eHam Forums / Antennas and Towers and more / getting the coax into the house - advice sought on: November 25, 2009, 08:05:11 AM
"On the outside wall mount an outdoor receptable surface mount box. They come with a surface gasket to prevent water getting into the hole you drill through the wall. Obviously this would look odd up on the second floor. But if you can mount it on the first floor or basement it will just look like an outdoor receptacle. And it won't leave you with a repair job when you decide to sell the house some day."

This is exactly what I did, and when I sell the house, I plan on putting a real outlet into the box.
60  eHam Forums / Elmers / I NEED SOME HELP FOLKS........ on: June 01, 2009, 12:51:25 PM
I do portable/camping operating all the time my antenna setup is as follows

opek hvt400 mobile antenna

4" square metal electrical box cover with a trunklid antenna mount attached

a couple of 30 ft radials made from junk speaker wire

and I just attach it to a picnic table with a hefty spring loaded plastic clamp

not a dx wonder, but I can set it up and be on the air in less than 5 minutes
