61  eHam Forums / Elmers / instructions on: February 15, 2009, 12:33:44 PM
Not in braille, but simplified instructions (that could be sent to a braille printer/terminal) might be here

http://www.icanworkthisthing.com

Several amateur xcvrs and other electronics are listed

63  eHam Forums / Computers And Software / Programming and cat for Yaesu FT-857D and linux on: September 12, 2008, 05:14:37 AM
A quick look at the operating manuals for the ft857d page 115 & ft897d page 64 show that there are no opcodes that can be used to set memory channels on either of those rigs (I had the same problem when I wrote the hamlib support for the ft100d)

If there is memory management in any windows software, then they are 'soft' channels controlled by the computer software, and are not the same as memory channels in the radio itself.

In other words -- don't blame linux/hamlib/grig, but rather Yaesu -- they did not give us programmers any way to set/select a memory channel on the radio.

64  eHam Forums / Elmers / Dipoles - yuk! on: August 04, 2008, 05:48:40 AM
>>I just buried a G5RV in the back yard, and it is working poorly. If I bury the rig also, will it work better???

If it is buried, it will only work for listening to underground radio stations.

65  eHam Forums / Computers And Software / Very cool FREE ham software check this out! on: August 01, 2008, 04:40:24 AM
Try taking a look at the "Who's On The Air" database aka WOTA.

http://www.wotadb.org/index.html

there is a list of software that supports this database there also.
66  eHam Forums / Elmers / Data Jack Vs. ACC Jack, Is There A Differance? on: July 28, 2008, 04:37:22 AM
I have used the data jack on my IC703 instead of using the acc jack, it works just fine. It also has the benefit of using the same connector as some of my other (non icom) radios, so no need to use multiple cables & adapters to run psk31/rtty & other digi modes when switching radios, just unplug from one and plug into another.

67  eHam Forums / Computers And Software / We need a GOOD linux logger -- HELP on: July 23, 2008, 04:35:46 AM
you could try jLog -- written in java, so it will run on linux systems, macs and even on windows.

This way everyone can use their favorite os and still be using the same logging program

68  eHam Forums / Digital / Low requirements PSK31 software? on: May 15, 2008, 05:31:35 AM
I have made lots of contacts in digital modes using gmfsk running under linux on 300-450 MHz PCs

Try running something like harv's hamshack hack on a bootable cd (might work on a usb flash drive also), if you don't want to go thru the full linux install

69  eHam Forums / Elmers / Repeater announcement ID on: April 30, 2008, 04:46:12 AM
Club station's call, the individual making the announcement is just a voice. Besides, what would you use if you were using a synthesized voice?
70  eHam Forums / Misc / Making a drop in gas prices happen. on: March 18, 2008, 04:41:49 AM
"1500? Nope. Not even close!!! Try 4 gallons, and even less as technology goes on."

I think that the 1500 gallons comes from the water used in the production of the corn used in the production of the ethanol. The 4 gallons you quote is about what is used just in the processing of the corn/grain/other organics into ethanol. It is in the rasing of the plant material that uses up most of the water.
71  eHam Forums / Elmers / PSK31 in Linux on: February 15, 2008, 04:48:48 AM
I was using gmfsk when I was using linux as a desktop (switched to OS X for the desktop, will eventually switch back, more ham software available for linux than macs )

http://gmfsk.connect.fi/

gmfsk sort of morphed into fldigi, never tried it, but everyone says its great

for the big list of linux ham software look here

72  eHam Forums / Computers And Software / Linux desktop on: February 07, 2008, 04:33:31 AM
I used to prefer KDE, then switched to Gnome, there are other choices also.

I usually just install all of the ones that come with the distro, and then some additional window managers and pick and choose as my mood changes.
73  eHam Forums / Antenna Restrictions / Antenna Issue in NYC Co-op on: November 16, 2007, 08:21:12 AM
-- I am 56 feet above MSL, so I have the height, just need a workable "stealthy" solution.<

-- ::56' ASL is "height?" I'm 857' ASL and I don't have any "height" that would make my

I think that MSL = Manhattan Street Level, meaning that his balcony is 56' above the street, which might be a good start for a vhf vertical or groundplane
74  eHam Forums / Youth / Youngest ham? on: September 26, 2007, 05:09:34 AM
You can download the ULS databases here
http://wireless.fcc.gov/uls/index.htm?job=transaction&page=weekly

but they do not seem to have birthdate in any of the files used for the amateur service
75  eHam Forums / Misc / Logbook software for Linux OS on: July 06, 2007, 04:43:19 AM
Try jLog
http://jlog.org

Written in Java, will work on any platform that supports Java. I have used it under Linux and OSX and it works well.
