You figured the problem out. Most hams will be running SSB on hf (there are some that run AM, but not all that many). A radio with SSB capabilities will be needed to listen in.
For the most part, LSB is used below 10 MHz, and USB used above.

>> Or, better yet work on contributing to the slim offerings in the Linux world. Whole different way of thinking, "write once, compile anywhere". Slim offerings in Linux? Linux is the only o/s with native ham radio support. AX25 can be built right into the kernel As for languages, go for portability and readability. Java or Python for portability, Python for readability. Another option is Realbasic -- nice portability between operating systems, and fairly easy to create a good gui. Currently free for Linux, about $100 for OSX or Windows.

>> Opps, a typo in the first sentence. It should say that FORTRAN and COBOL are **not** very useful for ham radio applications.
COBOL might not be all that useful, but NEC2 is written in FORTRAN.

I am using a G4 Mac Mini, for just about everything except for digital soundcard modes. I cant find any Mac Software that I like for those, so I use gmfsk on a linux box with the display exported to the Mac. For logging I really like using jLog http://jlog.org it's written in Java and is cross platform -- Mac, Linux, and even Windows. Could be many things, these are just a few.
Antenna orientation -- are the weaker stations coming in on a null in the G5RV?
Bad feedline on the G5RV?
Did you check your antenna tuner? Try tweaking it for whatever band you are trying to rx on the G5RV.
What happens if you swap antennas between the radios?

"This worked with an older version of Windows (I think it was 98), so I'm not sure about XP, or Linx. 73 de KB3LSR"
Linux handles multiple soundcards just fine, so does OS X and XP

"I finally decided to study the code 15min or more every day at 15wpm because thats as fast as I can recognize and then right down the letter (it's righting now thats holding me back!)."
Instead of writing the letters on paper, try typing them into a text editor. You can probably type way faster than you can write (even if you hunt-and-peck)

For logging I use jLog http://jlog.org it is not linux specific (it is written in java) and it also does a good job at basic rig control (freq get & set) and has dx cluster capabilities builtin. xlog is a good choice also and can be found (along with xdx) at http://www.qsl.net/pg4i/For PSK and other digital modes the best choice is gmfsk http://gmfsk.connect.fiYou will also want to have hamlib installed. This will allow any hamlib enabled application (like gmfsk, xlog, xdx and others) to do your rigcontrol (if you have a supported rig). http://hamlib.sourceforge.net Alex / AB2RC (ex KC2IVL)
