there is one all mode 220 rig out there, thats tricky to come by, its the icom ic-375a, nice radio, ive never owned one, but i hope to own one one day, if you find one for sale, theyre going for quite a pretty penny.

i have been having interference that sounds like youre listening to a shortwave receiver on an empty frequency that has nothing transmitting on it. i do not use hf presently, do not have the room for antennas, i primarily use 6m, 2m, 220, 440, and occasionally 900. when i was using hf(vertical) i had this noise real bad on all bands. Im thinking its power lines or something of that matter, but this noise will only be coming in at certain parts of the day. there will be times that its in during the daytime, off at night, sometime off in the daytime on at night, sometimes its on for 3 hour intervals and so forth. when i turn my rigs on that i use, ft8800r and icom 37a, this noise will not be coming in, soon as i start talking to someone for a few minutes, the noise kicks in, this makes me wonder if someone on my block has an illegal frequency jammer or sort of communications disrupter device, if this is the case, what can i legally do, i have contacted the fcc multiple times about this matter and have gotten no response. BTW, i have went through my entire house with my ht, and have found no source to where this noise is coming from, so its nothing in my house.

Power line transformers rarely make noise. It is almost always other hardware. Power line noise does not need to be steady. It can come and go.
It is unlikely to impossible to be a CB operator based on your description, or a jammer.
Any advice really requires a much better description of the noise. It might be a consumer device like a plasma TV. It could be a switching power supply or battery charger. It could be a power line.
Is the noise on one frequency, or is it evenly spread out? What bands, all bands evenly? Worse on some bands? What does it sound like? A hissing? Any buzz to it? When it is on is it steady?
the noise is really bad on 10,12,15,17,20,30 and part of 40. didnt hear it on 75/80 or 160, and is sounds like transformer noise on 6,2,220,440, i dont know about 900 or 1.2GHz, dont have radios for those bands.

i have this noise that wipes out my receive on all bands at my qth. it sounds like youre listening to an empty shortwave frequency and it kills hf, 6m, 2m,220, and above and so forth to the point i have trouble hearing local repeaters. it cannot not be a transformer on a telephone pole because if that were the case, i would hear it all the time, but this noise comes in few times one week, once another week and so forth, i never know when to expect it. im just curious to know if someone on my street hates me and is running some kind of frequency jammer or other device or what. this noise started last spring and was so bad to the point that all my equipment was useless. but not as bad this year, but still a nuisance. the only other last thing i can think of is, there are a lot of cb operators with high power linear amplifiers putting out 5000+ watts, maybe that my have something to do with it.

im not interested in fm work, i got radios for that, i was just interested in ssb work on vhf/uhf, since multimode rigs are quite scarce. With the output attenuated, the old 10m monoband transceivers should work okay with these transverters.
One possible problem occurs if you want to use the transverters on both SSB/CW and also FM, since those frequencies are widely separated and the 10m rigs only cover 1.7 MHz.
For example, on 2m all SSB/CW work is below 144.4 MHz (most is below 144.250 or so), while the FM calling frequency is 146.52. You'd need to change L.O. crystals in the transverter to get it to "move" that far. Also, if you ever wanted to work an FM repeater, you'd need a way to introduce the frequency offset (typically 600 kHz), which the little 10m rigs won't do.
On 70cm, the separation is even wider (432.100 up to 446 MHz). And so forth.
If you never want to use the transverters for FM work and can attenuate the 10m rig's transmitter output down to something the transverter will accept, there shouldn't be any problems.

i was looking at the elecraft xv series transverters for 6m,2m,1.25m,and 70cm. i was wondering if i could use these transceivers with a 10 meter all mode transceiver such as a uniden hr2510, hr2600, or Ranger 2950 type radio. i am also just curious if down east microwave systems transverters would work, or if the radio would need some slight modifications to be compatible.
thanks

well the coax was a piece of test coax, which was a knock off of RG-8X(grey), not belden, it was a piece of test coax. the antenna was mounted vertically for fm when i raised it up. but, ive come across another problem similar to this one, i have a few 3 foot test pieces of coax that are good. one is belden rg-8x(grey) and another one is mini 8 by belden which is a darker grey than the regular 8x. now the weird thing is that i cannot figure out, is why does the thicker heavier coax work good on 2 meters(rg-8x grey) but not on 440, but the thinner less shielded coax(mini 8 by belden) work good on 440 but not on 2 meters. but i have to get another 50 feet of lmr 400, because this is the coax i want to use if i put the antenna on the house. i already have one 50 foot run of lmr 400 on another antenna which i am taking down, so my objective with the cushcraft is to have 2 feedlines on the antenna and use an antenna switch since the t-section does not work completely.

i have a cushcraft a270-10s that i recently acquired brand new not used. seems to work okay if i hold the antenna in my hand and use 3 feet of coax hooked up to the ht, but if i put the antenna in the air about 15 feet and use 50 feet of coax, the antenna performs very poorly. i am not using the t-section that comes with the antenna because the antenna performs poorly with the t-section. i come to find out the antenna performs good feeding one feedline to the 2m and another one to the 70cm and use an antenna switch. i have checked the swr, and it is good on both bands and i have the reddimatch adjusted to factory specifications as listed in the assembly manual. as i stated above, the antenna works good with 3 feet of coax but does not work good at all with 50 feet of coax and does not work good with the t-section either???

reset the radio a few times, checked the fuses, they were good, and i am using a pyramid 35 amp power supply, but i know its not the power supply, i have a yaesu hf rig and this supply runs it with no problem, i used to have a few 300 watt mobile amps and this supply ran them with no problem. if it was the power supply it would not be running any of my equipment at all.

i recently acquired a kenwood ts 140s in mint pristine condition. i hooked it up yesterday and when i turned the radio on, it made a loud beeping noise and some ticking noises inside the radio, all the indicators on the lcd readout flashed a bunch of times then either the readout died or just one character and a period on the screen appeared and the whole radio froze. i did turn the memory channel select knob a bunch of times before turning the radio on and i reset the radio nor both did not accomplish anything. i checked the fuse holders, they were both fine and the fuses were good. and my power supply has nothing to do with this problem, because my power supply runs every other piece of equipment i hook up to it.
i am thinking one of two things could be wrong with this radio, either the vco is out of adjustment, or the cpu board or another board got hit by lightning

eHam Forums / Elmers / Eagle One HF Antenna Problem, HELP!!
|
on: August 09, 2010, 07:08:41 PM
|
|
i have recently acquired an eagle one hf antenna from w8afx @ s&g engineering in ohio. i have used the ldg 4:1 balun with the antenna and it screwed up the swr on all bands so i removed the balun and did a direct feed to the antenna with the coax. antenna worked good for a day or two on the direct feed. for some apparent reason the antenna will not match up on any of the hf bands. i tested my brand new rg-8x coax cable and the meter read solid 50 ohms at both ends of the coax cable. i am wondering if there is a short in the vertical dipole wire? i do not have any radials on the antenna, reason being, i live in the city and live on a small slab of property and have no room once so ever to put any radials down.
should i ditch this antenna and maybe get a new antenna all together...? i am restricted to vertical antennas only. no beams or longwires. any good vertical hf antenna suggestions.
Thanks KC2UJG

hello, i seen the shakespeare model 390-1mgb and the price on it is pretty reasonable. but according to the specifications it says 2-30MHz with tuner. i have a few hf antennas in mind, but i am just curious if anyone knows how good of an antenna the shakespeare verticals are, especially this one in particular. i just want a few opinions because i did not see any reviews of this antenna anywhere and i did not want to buy something and have it turn out to be complete garbage. Thanks, KC2UJG

eHam Forums / RFI / EMI / Noise on 2m in the daytime, not at night

hello, i just recently installed a comet gp-15 on my chimney about 45 feet in the air. i have a brand new 50 foot run of LMR-400 Ultraflex running off of that into my yaesu ft8800r. Each and every day on 2m, on repeaters and on simplex, theres like an electrostaic noise and it is so bad, you cannot hear the courtesy tone on the repeater, or hardly hear anyone on simplex, i mean simplex signals are strong, no doubt, but the electrostatic noise is so bad, its hard to hear anybody. And this noise is only in the daytime, a little bit at night, but not as bad as in the daytime, but 440, no problem once so ever.
