They gave the element lengths and said the charts did show the element spacing. I have read this several times and have not seen the element spacing.
2  eHam Forums / Remote HF Station Control / RE: RemoteHams on: February 19, 2013, 01:11:47 PM
Well, I tried the remotehams software and it does work. I have tuned a few remote stations and even can transmit on 2 stations. I have not done this however. This is because I have a simple question...

Just what can I do with these stations? I mean, I can transmit and call CQ I guess. However, it seems these stations suggest that you use their remote for only about 3 minutes. That is OK for a 5-9 good luck in the contest type of "QSO" but at other times...like mid-day during a weekday, what harm would there be in using the rig for a short ragchew especially if no one else is trying to use the remote? I do find that I can not email the owner...at least in the ones I have been looking at.

What am I missing here? Also, I am not talking about big stations with mono beams, but small stations running about 100 Watts to a dipole or GAP, etc. This is fine for a band I will not be able to use from home like 75. As far as a big gun station goes, I guess I do not see the thrill of running 1500 watts to a stack of 15M beams. Of course you will get thru!

I guess only a ham would watch the whole thing!

people you are making me smile.   this is exactly the news i wanted to hear. am in an apartment and will need to settle for no external antenna, and low power, and RF noise from neighbors. if i can do JT-65 with all those restrictions. life will be awesome.

first goal is just functionality with a cheap radio.  suppose i should get a signalink device?

next goal is mobile functionality. likely will need a cheap netbook.  fun fun

Read my post, above, regarding my "air interface".   Cheesy

This is a no cost way to see what you can copy...and even try a cq with a 2nd mic (and more than a hunk of wire)! I connected a 10M dipole in an "L" config. It worked so well, that I made one for 15M. Of course, I will buy a real interface, but wanted to see if it worked at all!

well looks like i will try JT65 on 10 meters (have that rig just collecting dust)  that is available to me as a tech license. will try to find the link to the software being typically used. good suggestion about just airgap monitoring, to just see what can be heard. you all are making me think this is some miracle mode that works on most bands regardless of the rf noise floor.   is it truly that functional?  or do i really need an open band (and my general ticket) to get it running?

am getting my general ticket regardless, and will have an HF radio soon as i find the right one for me.

Well, you sure do not need ANY license to just see what you can hear on 14076, 21076, 28076. I started with just a hunk of wire. Noise level has not hurt me at all, but if 10M is not open, it is just not open...but listen and try this link to see if 10M is open.

http://jt65.w6cqz.org/receptions.php

Also, I got JT65HF software...

One thing you need is to be sure your computer clock is accurate, but I found mine could be off just to monitor.

Look for D4...or Dimension 4 for that. All of this is free.

***UPDATE***
I guess I posted the same as others, but the above receptions link can show who is on what band. It will tell you if 10M is open or not.

Yes, but I wanted to wait to buy the USB interface to see how it all went. When I put my antenna(s) up I will do that. Still, the "air interface" proved it would work without spending anything.

Well, I do not have any antennas up...yet. In fact all my rigs were in a spare bedroom. So, I installed the JT65 software and added my Call and Grid Square. OK, now what? So I brought my TS940SAT up to my computer (Jeeze that rig is heavy) and stuffed a hunk of wire into the antenna jack! Next I put the Computer Mic next to the rigs speaker and tuned 10M. I did not hear much of anything, but several stations decoded! So, I looked at my box of antenna stuff still packed from when we moved up here (Oregon) from CA and found a dipole that I must have cut to take it down from CA. It was now good for about 32MHZ! OK, found a 100' hunk of Coax and hung the dipole in an "L" 10 feet from the rig. I then connected my MC85 Mic to the rig and had a perfect "Air Interface". I called CQ on JT65 and only used about 10 watts as RF was getting into my Computer.

I got an answer from NM. Next JA came back to me. Then I played with an "L" on 15M and got KL8 in Denali.

I will put my antennas up again, but JT65 was fun for a quick "test". I guess the "test" was a success!

Re:KF6ABU
Other than the boy version which is generally hung lower than the girl version is there any noticeable performance difference between the two?

I bet the boy version is quieter! Much less QRM!

Thank you. HRO told me that Bud at ARS was great and he is rather local. I may try him as I would save FedEX/UPS charges. I will see how familiar he is with the TM255A.

Thank you Clif:
One thing I don't like is that when I opened the rigs covers I can smell "something". Not bad like something burned, but more like something got hot. This was not there before I tried to transmit. I wonder if I should have done a reset before I did anything else? I know it should not have mattered, but after I tried to transmit, it would only receive in FM. In SSB it would go silent. After a reset, all was OK again...except for transmit! I did want to look inside the cover where the finals were but the 6 screws were tight. I may try again to see if anything in there looks/smells bad!

Thank you. Yes, I do have that manual. Also, for some reason the battery is still good. Yes, that is the fix I did. I got a 10mfd 16v tant at Radio Shack and put it across C6.

The rig just will not transmit. All else is OK. In fact I listened to a SSB net Monday night. Not sure why xmt stopped after being in the box for almost 18 years!
12  eHam Forums / Mods And Repairs / RE: Kenwood Repair.. TM-255A will not Transmit on: December 27, 2012, 04:10:31 PM
When I push PTT on the mic, it has NO power out. I can hear a relay click. This is in SSB mode on 144.2 or in FM mode in 145.27. I tried a watt meter but also went to simplex and listened with another rig. It is not transmitting. I first noticed it when the repeater did not come up and then noticed that even on SSB the S meter lcd's did not move.

Receive is fine.

Clif, did you ever get my reply here? I did add the cap across C6 in the control head and it powers on OK now. Still no transmit on any mode, however.
13  eHam Forums / Mods And Repairs / RE: Kenwood Repair.. TM-255A will not Transmit on: December 20, 2012, 02:59:33 PM
Well, the cap fix was easy. I used a Radio Shack 10 mfd Tant cap across C6 in the control haad.

Now I need to see why it will not transmit!
14  eHam Forums / Mods And Repairs / RE: Kenwood Repair.. TM-255A will not Transmit on: December 18, 2012, 07:11:02 PM

As far as bad contacts goes it has been packed in a spare bedroom and NOT in a basement or garage.

That has diddly to do with controls and switches drying out from not being operated.

You still could be just suffering from Ye Olde Dirty Switches.

OK, but first I need to put that cap across C6. Easy to take control panel off and now I need to solder the 10mfd cap across it. Hardest part is seeing it!

Then I will see what is going on.

Thanks all: I can check the power module type. There is no output even on FM and in SSB there is no modulation when I speak into the mic. The Signal strength LCD's are supposed to move when in XMT and speaking and they are not. Even if it were a bad Mic, I should hear a carrier on FM with a different rig listening. It does go into TX mode...at least the on air light thinks so.

I will get the CAP today and I think that C6 is in the small panel that I can detach. I believe there are a few small screws that I can take off and expose the back and find the C6/IC5 area.
