When I push PTT on the mic, it has NO power out. I can hear a relay click. This is in SSB mode on 144.2 or in FM mode in 145.27. I tried a watt meter but also went to simplex and listened with another rig. It is not transmitting. I first noticed it when the repeater did not come up and then noticed that even on SSB the S meter lcd's did not move.
Receive is fine.

Does anyone know of a good Kenwood repair facility? Kenwood wants $75/hr with no idea of how long to allow. I guess Hamrepair has GREAT reviews so I should call Cal.
First, does anyone know if there is an easy fix?
I bought this rig new in 1995 and after 6 months we moved. It has been packed in its original box for all this time. So here is what happened when I tried it out last week!
1. It would not power on. I looked and there was info about adding a cap across C6 for the reset circuit. I did not do this yet, but as the TIP said, when the rig is cold, it will power up. So, I put it in the garage for an hour or so and yes it did power up OK.
2. OK, next I tried to transmit and it would not. I tried 144.2 SSB and 146.27 FM and I can listen but no transmit. The offsets were correct.
Is it possible that once the mod in 1, above, is done, it will work or does 1 have nothing to do with 2?
Thank you forr any help.

Thank you all for your help.
I can not call CQ as I can not transmit...yet. I need to put my antenna(s) back up. I tried Digital to see if I could hear/decode anything. I hung a 10M dipole in my room in an "L" and I brought my TS940SAT up to be near my computer and tried an "air interface" using a mic. I heard/decoded PSK31 OK with Digipan and then tried JT65-HF. JT65 worked so well, that I got out my Rig Mic (MC85) and tried to xmit. Got answer on first CQ and went on to log JA, and even KL8DX in Denali Nat'l Park. So, I wanted to see if I could "decode" Olivia. I installed Fldigi and it too can decode PSK31, but I have not been able to find Olivia activity.
I WILL try these suggestions, but I do not need a spice rack! :-) I can go out in the garage and perhaps play with the table saw.
When I check Hamspots, I see 14074.79 so was confused as to where to tune! Thank you all again and I can not wait to get my R5 back up. We moved here from CA 18 years ago and my antennas are still packed. I actually unpacked my R5, but need to run the coax.

I installed the current FLDIGI for Windows...3.21.63... and have it configured OK. I can get PSK31 on it. I do admit that I like Digipan's Multi function as you do not need to click a signal from the waterfall.
However, all I want to do is see if I can receive Olivia. I just see noise in the waterfall for Olivia freqs. I keep seeing a bunch of them posted and have looked from 14072 to 14075, and 14107.5. I have tried 8/250, 16/500 and 32/1000. I keep hearing that this mode is so good that you can decode sigs without even seeing them on the waterfall...GREAT!
However, that leads me to my questions.
Which freq/mode do I start with and, if you can not even see the sig on the waterfall, then how do you click on something like I do on PSK31? Is the sig so wide that you do not even have to click it?
Thank you all. I am OK on PSK31 and JT65-HF, but I am getting nowhere on OLIVIA.

eHam Forums / Digital / RE: JT65-HF Log QSO no correct

I see I can not correct my subject, but it is "...QSO NOT correct". When will they invent a keyboard that can type? :-)
OK, my issue...
I would not have noticed this except that I had an error uploading my log generated by JT65 to eQSL. I forgot to show the BAND in 1 entry and tried to edit it.
I also looked at the CSV. When I had the QSO I got a -12 and sent a -14. However, when I looked in the ADI it said I sent a -15. Even the CSV shows the -14. Any idea why this could happen?
Is there a program I can use to display/edit the ADI? I used UltraEdit but wanted something for Ham Radio.
Unless you require 100% exact confirmation on all data elements to create a QSL, I would say that a delta of -1 db isn't going to make a difference in your log results. Why your logging is different is, like was posted, probably due to the way you select stations by double clicking. I have noticed JT65-HF behave slightly different by clicking in different places vs typing in data. Personally I don't worry about the signal reports that much on JT65. I figure if the computer decoded them then it must have heard them. I have worked stations I personally did not know were there (no trace or sound to my ear) yet the computer decoded them and we had a QSO. Really weird having a QSO with 'nothing' seen or heard. Kind of like QSOing with Elvis or something like that. Gene W5DQ I agree, Gene, but was wondering why it happened. I, too, have had contacts (can I call JT65 a QSO?) I could not hear. I am using, for now, an "air interface" using 2 mic's and a "dipole" in an "L" configuration hanging in my room with about 20 watts. I can not wait to get my R5 back up.

The different values for signal report are caused by operator error...namely, double-clicking on the call window instead of using the two rows of buttons. Each time you click on the QSO window, it changes the log to match the measured signal report from THAT transmission...not necessarily the one you started with.

Good point, but I was not sure I did that. I guess I am not sure when the halt TX should be used either. I can call CQ and if I get an answer I do double click. If I answer a CQ I also double click. However, I do not believe I double click after that...I just use the buttons...however, I may hit halt TX...I will have to play some more.

With the JT65 program I use, it logs the last signal report corresponding to a transmission initiated by a double click on RED. It keeps the signal report if you use the buttons.
You can change it back to the right report before you save it. In practice, I still use paper logs and do the LoTW transfer via DX Keeper.
Well, I worked 2 JT65 stations yesterday and it was OK so I have no idea what happened. One station was KL8DX and I wanted his QSL and submitted several different logs to LoTW but I guess they are way behind! I am looking for a JA as well. I have him on eQSL but I guess they only count if they are on LoTW. P.S. When I was a kid..K1NBW...I lived in Hartford and "lived" at the ARRL/W1AW. I knew all of the people there and often talked to them from their QTH. I remember 1 night me and W1HDQ were on 10M and a station broke in and said we were the only 2 he heard on the band. It was ZS4LB!

Well, M0DRH, I also changed servers, but I tried D4 again and all was OK so I left it configured that way. So far all is OK.
O.K, if it works for you fine, I also used to run a time synch program also, But then after some googling about "Windows XP Time", I found and did the reg tweaks. If you have multiple PC's on a network that you need to keep the correct time on? From your other PC's either in a cmd window or a startup batch file you can use this command (( You could also run it via task scheduler )) net time \\ComputerName /set where "ComputerName" is the name or ip address of the PC where you have the time synch app, or haved tweaked the reg. (full details: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb490716.aspx ) 73 Thank you. However, the computer I tried JT65 on is the only one that needs to be that close in time. It is well under 0.5 seconds off and is usually between 0.0 to 0.2 sec off in my JT65 window.

My rule for digital modes:
. . . The first QSO is the hardest.
It'll be easy from now on.
"RF in the shack" is the bane of apartment antennas. Mine is in the attic, and every wire in my shack (one floor below) has a ferrite (or two) on it.
Good luck!
Charles
Thanks Charles. Well, I have an R5 I had great results with before I moved to Portland, OR. I plan to put it up soon. I have not tried PSK31 yet, but can listen with digipan, but want to be able to run more than 10 watts...or at least wait for the outside antenna. '73, Dave I wonder about awards as the ARRL will not take eQSL...only LoTW. So far all 3 of my JT65 contacts have been eQSL. I thought that JA would at least be LoTW.

Great...it works.
I cut a quick 15M dipole, hung it as an L in my room and called CQ and it shows a lot of stations heard me. Then I tried to answer a CQ from Japan and logged it! I am only running about 10 watts out as the rig/antenna are in the same room and it gets into my computer if I go much higher in power!

OK, I think my problem was that I saw all those "PINS" and knew they did not hear me. I did see one that said 22hrs (I selected last 24 hours) and when I hovered over it I was there. So, if I look a few minutes after a CQ, will it show a time near the PIN? I will try now.
