1  eHam Forums / CW / RE: Left Handed Keys on: Yesterday at 05:49:12 PM
Just about any single or dual level paddle can be right or left handed.. just reverse the dit and dah wires (something such as benchers, begalis, k8ra, n3zn, etc).

Vibroplex vibrokeyer or bug you might have a problem due to their design. I think you might be able to order those setup for left handed.
2  eHam Forums / Emergency Communications / RE: UV-5R FOR PART 90 FIRE DEPT USAGE. on: Yesterday at 12:20:58 PM
An old thread but just some observations about the comments.

Yes, it would be nice if only very dependable, typically higher priced brands of radios could be used.  But that's not always possible for some departments, especially volunteer department that depend on 'self-bought' equipment.  Think about that, your equipment, radios, bunker-gear, etc, comes out of your pocket.  That's a pretty good 'chunk' of $$$!  Not using the most expensive equipment is always a consideration, no matter if it's your 'neck' or someone elses.  You do that economizing in areas that aren't an 'absolute sure thing' life endangerment.  That's true for the bigger, paid departments too you know.  (Don't know about you, but I couldn't afford the higher priced stuff, and I was a firefighter, I know how important gear is.)
The 'Chinese' radios aren't the 'best' in the world, but they can certainly be useful.  You can't use a Motorola HT for a hammer either!  Things have improved, you don't find many volunteer departments fighting grass fires with wet tow-sacks anymore.  But you also don't find many with $50,000 grass rigs either.
Do I think all departments should be using the 'Chinese' HTs?  No, I don't.  But if that's what is affordable, then why not?
 - Paul

If you have to self purchase radios as the only option (assuming you've tried for grants, etc), I'd sooner trust a good used radio designed for the abuse (for example motorola) rather than the chinese made ham stuff that is NOT built for the type of abuse.

4  eHam Forums / DXing / RE: Lower Your Power and Improve Your Pileup Skill on: May 21, 2013, 02:08:53 PM
Most of the time I use 100w in the pileups.. especially if the dx has consistently decent signals. I'll fire the amp up if it happens to be DX I have had trouble hearing due to propagation and I finally hear them with a decent signal. Nepal and Bangladesh come to mind. My amp is an SB-200. I just have a dipole fed with 600 ohm ladder line up maybe 60 feet.

I am always trying to improve my skills to lower my time calling and get in the log faster. Some of the bigger rarer ones I managed to get in there within the first night or so of operation with 100w so I'm pretty pleased.

5  eHam Forums / VHF / UHF / RE: Nice little opening on 6m this afternoon on: May 15, 2013, 09:35:46 PM
I'm by no means an expert but I think some keep something on 50.125 at all times. As for me I watch the DX clusters from time to time and watch for openings. Probably many other ways...
6  eHam Forums / VHF / UHF / RE: Nice little opening on 6m this afternoon on: May 15, 2013, 06:26:59 PM
Had a nice opening this evening... worked the west coast for the first time! Worked washington state. Also worked Idaho! Smiley

8  eHam Forums / DXing / RE: So what shack upgrades are you going to make for P5? on: May 02, 2013, 01:36:12 PM
I think I'd try to throw up some sort of wire beam for a specific ban. I have a 17/12m beam sitting under the deck also.. maybe see if I can suspend that somehow and aim it that way.

I'll believe it when I see it though. As of right now things are a little crazy in North Korea as they have been in the news lately so I imagine that might affect when P5 will be on the air next..
9  eHam Forums / DXing / RE: DX Cluster for Long Island on: April 30, 2013, 06:45:33 AM
back in the days before the internet I can remember packet dx clusters that were quite local to the area you lived in which was very nice.
10  eHam Forums / QRP / RE: Fun in the sun on: April 29, 2013, 01:44:52 PM
Your unfortunate paddle fiasco reminds me of my first outside QRP trip after returning to the hobby,I was using my old Bencher BY-1  paddles and due to the proliferation of the spring blackflies and mosquitoes my springs and contact points were soon a mash of squished goo and useless.

Ewww!!  Shocked
11  eHam Forums / QRP / RE: random or long wire for the KX1 on: April 29, 2013, 10:42:12 AM
I use the antenna suggested in the Elecraft manual of the auto antenna tuner for the KX1. I think the radiating element is about 28ft (I had tried 24 feet but it didn't want to load that well). I forget how long the counterpoise is, but it's in the manual. For a lightweight "trail friendly" antenna I can carry in a ziplock bag.. I think the antenna works well for what it is. I've worked into europe with this antenna. It loads up on 40, 30 and 20m.

We also had beautiful spring weather this past weekend. Sunny and temps about 70F. I brought the KX1 out to the deck and tossed my long wire antenna into the trees. I made some contacts in the Florida QSO Party as well has a nice QSO on 30m (unfortunately cut short when the band changed). I think my power output was about 1 - 1.5w on the internal alkalines. Worked several stations in FL and one in OH. Heard some DX but they had small pileups. It was certainly a nice day to get outside and operate!
13  eHam Forums / Emergency Communications / RE: UV-5R FOR PART 90 FIRE DEPT USAGE. on: April 29, 2013, 09:48:43 AM
I would say for low / moderate VFD / SAR ops or something to take home if you have to keep your federally mandated 800mhz radios under lock and key like our local SAR ops do, I would look at the Wouxun KGUV6D V2.

Why do you feel that a low / moderate VFD does not require an equally substantially build radio that a busy VFD or "big city" FD might carry? The danger is just the same for any fire department whether they get 10 calls a year, 100, 1000 or 10,000 calls per year.
