eHam Forums / RFI / EMI / Utility transformer causing RFI?

Hey all, I have been having some intermittent S-7 to S-9+ arcing noise since it turned cool. It will start and last for a few minutes then stop and it is just like a street lamp failing, but it is 24/7. I used a directional antenna to get a good bearing and then used a HT to zero in on the offender. What I found was strongest near a light pole except it was daylight and the light was off, but hidden in the bushes behind the light pole was the transformer for the underground utilities. I guess I am having a hard time thinking it is the transformer because I one would think it would be a constant arcing sound and not every 5 minutes so so ( 5 minutes quiet and around 3 to 5 minutes arcing ). Does anyone have any experience with this?

I got several members of our Military Vehicle club to get licensed. It's great on convoys and static displays. Working radio equipment really draws a lot of interest, especially when working DX.

eHam Forums / Misc / RE: Can't they build a cheaper radio?

I paid $100 for my Kenwood TS-520SE and all I had to do was an alignment and it works great! I do wish I had 30 meters on that rig. I do have several Small Wonder Labs RM-40's and a RM-30 that are quite fun and they are very inexpensive at $29 each. Ham radio is as expensive as you make it. Also remeber that the antenna is 90% or better of the station. Spend your money on the antenna, better yet build your own.

eHam Forums / Misc / Name of basic electronics show in the 70's

Hey all, I remember a show on PBS in the 70's ago that taught basic electronics, but I can't remember the name of the show. Does anyone remember it? This was brought up on a post in another forum, but I can't remember where or which post, and I don't think it had a name of the show.

eHam Forums / Mods And Repairs / RE: 2500M not changing frequency or memory groups

Thanks for the replies! I changed out the rotary switch and it still has the problem. I also used the up/down on the mic and it works fine on the down button, but the up is very odd. It will work fine for one or two button presses then it will start jumping several digits. Example, I have the radio on 146.50 and I want 146.52, press the up button and it will go to 146.505...press it again and it might go to 146.750 or 146.595. I think the IC lost it mind. I have also found the same results when I press the function button which really puzzled me.

Hey all, I have a 2500M and it started acting strange with the rotary "channel" select was skipping when trying to dial in a frequency. Now it won't change at all except it will change one diget when turning the know when fist powering up. I can't find the schematic so any help would be great.

I unpluged the fuel heater located on the HFCM ( Horizontal Fuel Conditioning Module ) and the noise went away! I will leave it off and see how it does going to work in the morning.
