I don`t know what causes this s.w.r. problem, but i know it is a known problem with at least the original `100`s. They also had xmit overheating problems, requiring a fan mod. I suggest one of the FT-100 Yahoo user groups would be very helpful with this,as they are aware of all the known problems with that series radio. -Mike NO2A.

Bill,I`d like to know what the normal plate voltage should be for the SB-200. 1900 volts key down sounds to low to produce 500-600 watts out,but maybe someone who owns one or Tom can comment on that. The plate current sounds low also. Even if the tubes are soft I would want to know the proper voltage level. -Mike.

Lyman, what kind of antenna are you using, and on what bands? In the early to late evening lately 40,30,and 20 meters have all been in good shape. I worked Haiti and TX the other night on 30m.-Mike,NO2A.

That power supply is actually rated at 27 amps continuous, and 35 amps peak. Though it may work on ssb,do so at your own risk. I would measure the actual current drain used,or crank the radio down to the 100 watt level to be safe.

N2EY was correct. Put up a center-fed dipole, say 135 feet fed with open wire feedline. Get the widest matching highest power balanced line or coax/balanced line tuner available. You`ll be able to work 80-10 meters well,160 with a lousy signal, and possibley 2m,440Mhz. (with low power only) That`s as close as it gets, and actually 6 meters might be the highest band that would work ok.

This question has surfaced before. The fan will only come on if the radio is running hot enough to activate it. Extended transmitting in a.m./f.m./ssb might activate it,but rarely. This is normal operation for this radio, nothing to be worried about.

The on the glass antenna is the problem. Chances are you`re getting r.f. going back into the `7800. Sometimes the remote head can pick up r.f. from the cable, but i would try a different antenna first. I use a trunk lid mount for 2 meters/70c.m. bands with no r.f. feedback or r.f. getting into my car electronics.

I have the Mosley MP-33. I`ve had it for years and i like the construction. They come in color coded elements, and you select how you want it tuned either for the c.w. part of band or the phone part. There is no measuring involved, making for easy assembly and it will be resonate where you want it. The traps are of high quality. You may have to wait awhile for delivery but i`d take the Mosley for quality.
