76  eHam Forums / Misc / RE: Kenwood TS-870 Owners / Basic Tx Settings. on: February 20, 2013, 01:03:34 PM
If the `870 has a monitor function,I would use that to hear your audio. Of course it will be somewhat different from the actual on air sound,it should still help. I use compression with the eq also. You could start by trying the default setings for those which should be in the manual. If your voice is very baritone you`d probably want higher eq settings to bring out the midrange or treble. A higher voice would be just the opposite, with lower bass type settings.
77  eHam Forums / Amplifiers / RE: AL-80A problem interfacing to Icom 718 on: February 17, 2013, 10:07:53 PM
Can the distortion you are talking about be described as an intermittent receive situation?  If so, it could be a sticky transmit/receive relay.  If your reception is fine without the amplifier in line, that would be a thing I'd look at.
I think it`s the radio relay sticking. I have the same problem sometimes when using my FT-857D with my AL-80A. When this happens I put the amp in standby and tap the cw key, then the `857 goes back to receive with normal sensitivity. It`s the radio relay, not the amp relay. I think that`s what`s happening in his situation. The relay gets hungup somehow.
78  eHam Forums / Mobile Ham / RE: Kenwood TH-F6A with Wide Receiver - Virginia and Scanners on: February 17, 2013, 09:43:58 PM
I wouldn`t use the ht in your car,but other than that I wouldn`t worry. Really almost all ham rigs these days can scan bands,be it ham or public service with an ht. You`re a licensed ham using a rig on the ham bands, nothing illegal with that.
79  eHam Forums / CW / RE: CW DX Question on: February 12, 2013, 01:33:44 PM
There is nothing illegal about telling someone over the air the brand of radio or equipment you`re using. That is not advertizing. Unless you make a living by selling radio equipment, not just selling a radio or equipment over the air. You show me where in part 97 it is illegal to say what brand of radio you`re using.
80  eHam Forums / Mobile Ham / RE: Yaesu FT-897D vs Yaesu FT-857D - will appreciate some light on the issue on: February 10, 2013, 05:47:29 PM
The last I heard the `897 offered a TCXO as standard, not optional as on the `857.  Unless you operate mostly digital modes, you may never need the high stability it offers.
81  eHam Forums / RFI / EMI / RE: Strong 80m noise on: December 15, 2012, 11:48:31 AM
Maybe if you could locate the noise yourself with the am receiver, then call public service and meet them there. Hopefully they would do that.
82  eHam Forums / Misc / RE: Question! What if someone....... - Part 1 on: December 05, 2012, 09:34:47 PM
Sorry that happened to you. This is one reason I avoid the phone portion of most bands. It also brings up a good question,"Why do nets even exist?" I have yet to figure that out. Wouldn`t it be great to abolish them and return the phone bands to casual operation? There`s always the warc bands and cw. I understand your position, nobody wants to start an argument on the air,I wouldn`t either.
83  eHam Forums / Elmers / RE: Sony sw7600rg / I need serious opinions quickly on: November 30, 2012, 12:21:47 PM
My advice is to get a receiver that has a provision for an external antenna, don`t rely on a built in one. My ht receives the hf bands lousy with the built in ferrite bar antenna. However,if I connect just a few feet of wire to the sma connector it hears really well, Even on the low bands. It doesn`t need to be an 80m dipole, just 5-10 feet of wire.
84  eHam Forums / CW / RE: Are fewer people using CW than 20 years ago? on: November 26, 2012, 11:10:23 AM
I would agree with many who have said that casual operating has declined from what it once was. During the 80`s the novice 40m portion was very active. I`ve found that portion is good around sundown and early evening. 7050 is a good place to tune around,as is 3550. I`d have to say 40 is better for late night/early morning as 80 can be quiet real late. There is of course dx on 80,and sometimes the noise level gets better later at night, like after 12am here in NJ. 30m can vary, but usually plenty of activity. 40 daytime is very good for ssb/cw.
85  eHam Forums / QRP / RE: What is QRP really about and do you truly exercise QRP? on: November 26, 2012, 10:29:33 AM
I think it`s neat Alinco`s latest hf rig has a qrp feature to go below 5 watts. Wish we could see more of that on hf rigs, not just dedicated qrp rigs. What`s embarassing is when a qrp station answers me and his 5 watts sounds better than my 100 watts!  Wink Usually that`s a base station with a monster antenna. I really must give credit to those that can do that. Some time ago I had worked a station in VT who was running 50 milliwatts on 80 cw!  Ok,it wasn`t exactly dx,but he was putting out a very respectable signal. On noisy 80m! It makes me want to built an attenuator and see what I could do with that power level. I don`t know what the current power level record is,but years ago I know two stations on 10m set a record using 56 microwatts! Of course that`s pushing it. I think the qso was from TX to CA. You`d also need an accurate wattmeter. I`ve done 100 milliwatts to Europe with my 3 ele yagi on 20m. Two stations heard me with dipoles. It`s fun to experiment with qrp or QRPp.
86  eHam Forums / Misc / RE: Noise at S9+ (11/22/2012) on: November 23, 2012, 11:16:36 AM
A week or two ago I was listening to the noise on both 160 and 80m. It was horrible, about s9. I went up to 40m and couldn`t believe the difference. Just some slight static crash on 40,not bad at all. Sometimes 80 isn`t that bad. I`m just thankful it`s not real noisy 24/7.
87  eHam Forums / Misc / 30m ssb? on: November 21, 2012, 09:58:07 AM
I was on 30m early this morning around 0600 utc, when I heard two Spanish speaking stations talking to each other. Are there any countries that allow ssb on this band or are they freebanders?
88  eHam Forums / Mods And Repairs / RE: Kenwood TS-140S display on: November 12, 2012, 08:20:09 PM
You could look on E-bay for a dead/parts radio. The display would probably still work. I wouldn`t pay much for it though. At least there are some good things about that website.

Hello I am looking for an inexpensive HF amplifier that will put out 350-1500 watts.

I just want to say that if you go used, I
like the Ameritron AL-80A. It has been a workhorse
for me, and made it to 5R8 and back just fine.
It doesn't have soft start or some of the other
features of the AL80B, and it is bigger and
heavier than the 80B, but still a great amp
that can be found used at good prices.

Good luck with your purchase!

My AL-80A has factory installed soft start. I think there were 3 different versions of that amp. Is that right,Tom?
90  eHam Forums / Elmers / RE: Power On-Off at Rig or at Power Supply? on: November 10, 2012, 01:32:55 PM
I think this is similiar to why you don`t start a generator with a load on it.
