eHam Forums / Misc / Old QSL - Mode: RAC ?

I found the answer to my own question! http://forums.qrz.com/archive/index.php/t-67809.html"Unlike the old "self-rectifying" raw a.c. rigs of the 1920's, this setup would use the triode tubes as a high power balanced modulator. Feed rf to the grids in parallel, but use a balanced pushpull plate tank circuit. The "carrier" would be balanced out, but there would be two "sidebands" 120 hZ apart: USB and LSB at 60 Hz. This would be basically a double sideband suppressed carrier transmitter tone modulated with 60 Hz a.c. There would be no raspiness or hash, just two carriers 120~ apart. The signal would be narrow and clean, and could be copied with a normal CW receiver or with a diode AM detector with no BFO." Sounds cool !! jw

eHam Forums / Misc / Old QSL - Mode: RAC ?

I collect old cards from my local area and just acquired one from 1933. The card reads:
UR _RAC_ sigs: QSA 4, R 6.
Transmitter: T.P.T.G. 750 volts, 210 tube. Receiver: 224 + 227 Band: 7 MC
My question, what's "RAC"? The only thing that comes to mind is Raw A.C., like spark, but that's not right.
Ideas?

eHam Forums / Misc / 11 meter ham band in the 1950's ...

"Do you suppose this happened during a low cycle in the sun spots? We might want to get on 10M...even if it is just local!"
I agree, always make some noise. There is a fair amount of local activity around here even when the band is 'closed'. If I remember correctly, I've heard storys that 1957 was a phenominal year for 6m DX, so it was probably near a sunspot maximum.

... I collect local QSL cards from the past and just found one that states 25.7mhz in 1957. It's my understanding that hams lost 11 meters in 1959? What were the band limits and does anyone have any stories of using that band? Not much to be found on the web regarding this old ham band.

Okay, so you 'upgrade' to another deck and think "Well, I don't want to get rid of that great supply, I'll keep it." Eventually, that supply goes somewhere, right? Where does it go? Parted out? For what? Another supply, but where does that one end up? Get my point? They NEVER show up!
Is there an underground ring of power supply hoarders selling them to China??

Just a question in general. There seems to be a surplus of RF decks for sale or auction, but what about the power supplies? I never see them for sale or auction. Not even for local pickup! Where to they go?
"Yeah, well, you gotta build one."
Sure, I know that, but for each RF deck, there must have been a supply for it at one time, right? I understand that they are heavy and nobody wants to ship it, but what about pick up?? Do ever see them at estate sales? Are they passed down from generation to generation? Are the 11 meter ops picking them up?
Just curious. Makes no sense to me.

eHam Forums / DXing / "No eQSL pls" - what's this?

What burns me is getting an eQSL in response from a station I've sent a 'real' QSL + SASE, or Canadian station I've sent a card + SAE + $1 US !
"Thanks for the buck chump, here's your worthless eQSL in return".
