46  eHam Forums / Elmers / how do you make ham labels? on: February 07, 2007, 09:18:49 AM
Dry transfer lettering is hard to find and expensive!

I use microsoft publisher!

The reason is that this software has a relative
position indicator. That is if you want to center
a legend over a switch lets say,and it must be 1.25 inches from the last switch center. You place the cursor below the center of that legend and right drag the curser it will tell you the distance..So you know how the lettering is centering..

I print it out to check the positioning then if ok
I print the work on a heavy weight paper.Usually with a Inkjet printer.I then i spray the face with
two coats of matte krylon clear spray then I let it dry..I spray the back with spray
adhesive!

Then I have a corner rounding punch ($5 at staples or Office Depot). This is so the corners dont curl up due to age! I made some really nice panel legends this way. you can use any font and bordering you want
and it looks great..

I was working on a article about this but it is not finished yet..

I hope this helps..

48  eHam Forums / CW / Operating CW on the Icom 756 Pro III on: December 28, 2006, 02:52:20 PM
I thought when you tuned the desired signal to the center line of the band scope you were all set when you are in CW? If you go to CW-R it should still be in the same place on the scope I thought?

What are you using them for?
50  eHam Forums / Elmers / Rope being frayed by tree! on: October 06, 2006, 08:22:23 AM
You know where the rope is fraying! Slip a
short piece of hose over the rope and when the antenna is pulled back up the hose will be over the branch and it will take the beating. Put a big knot
on the rope at each end of the hose to keep it in place on the rope . the hose only has to be of a diameter to slip over the rope.

51  eHam Forums / Mods And Repairs / PL for TR-7400A on: September 28, 2006, 03:30:04 PM
I put the com spec module in my 7400 and it works FB

Was not too difficult to install! I put a external switch in a box to change tones.

As a matter of fact I was thinking of selling it as
I am not active on two meters anymore..

52  eHam Forums / Antennas and Towers and more / Need Recommendation for Telescoping Pole on: September 27, 2006, 09:58:40 AM
I have a channelmaster pole up about 30 feet ! It is bolted to my back fence with NO guys! It's been up there about for or five years with no problem..

Lubricate the clamps with greace so they dont sieze up..

I am supporting three inverted "V" antennas..

Also Home depot has aluminum 24 foot extedable painters poles for thirty bucks each that reach the top of my two stroy house..
53  eHam Forums / Antennas and Towers and more / Crank-up Tower Remote Height Indicator on: September 13, 2006, 02:22:30 PM
OK here is a solution !

Buy a 33 foot tape measure! Buy a minuature tv camera ! One of those cheap little $30 jobs (look
in Nuts and Volts magazine ads)!

Mount the tape and the camera in a Good quality metal or plastic box!

Mount the box at the top of the tower base section
which is between 20 and 23 feet up..
have a hole in the bottom of the box for the tape to exit. Tie a dacron cord to the tower cable with a
wire rope clamp. Tie the other end to the end of the tape. Run a appropriate cable from the box to the shack for video and Dc power and small LED to illuminate the tape!

Watch the lenght of the tape on TV as it is being pulled out of the box by the cable! Voila!

54  eHam Forums / Station Building / Laser printers for QSL cards on: August 30, 2006, 10:22:01 AM
I use a Epson C-88 Inkjet with water resistant ink
and it prints beautifully and feeds the cards no
problems with slipping cards!

Also prints beatifull custom cards I design on my PC..

My preprinted cards from Octavia are coated on the front and the backs are very smooth! This printer
handles them with no problem!
55  eHam Forums / Mobile Ham / Installing antenna on a (plastic) Saturn vue? on: August 29, 2006, 11:29:50 AM
Has anyone thought of or tried spraying conductive
paint on the inside of the trunk and using fimger stock to ground it to the frame?
56  eHam Forums / Elmers / Some questions about the Yaesu 767GX on: August 14, 2006, 02:06:21 PM
I have one myself!
It worked well for me. I worked 160 country's with it.
It has a built in accurate digital SWR/Wattmeter.
It has a built in tuner.. the only thing it doesnt have is variable filters ..It has a ssb filter and a
cw filter and a audio peak filter for CW..
The manual notch is pretty good..
I've had mine for 10 years,I bought it used from AES in orlando.. I think its a Good begginers radio
especilally as the used prices run $450 to 500
and it has a built in 12v power supply..

I am thinking of selling my FT-767 as I bought a Icom pro3 about a year ago..

57  eHam Forums / Antennas and Towers and more / Home Brew Tower plans on: August 02, 2006, 06:49:59 AM
My dad and I built a 40 foot tilt over mast about
40 ft high years ago from iron(black pipe)
that we salvaged from the dump..

The only welded part was the U shaped pivot point made from a 3in wide 1/2 inch thick piece of steel
bent into a U. it had a 3/4 inch hole bored through
for the pivot bolt.. the pivot was 15 feet from the bottom .. The bottom section was 3 inch pipe..

The sections were  slipped inside each other with shims to take up slop and bolts holding them in place.

I had it up 20 years with no guying.. total cost $20.

I am so sorry I ever took it down...

There is a plan in the one of the RSGB antenna books
I cannot remember which one.at this time as I am not at my qth right now.

58  eHam Forums / Computers And Software / Sound Cards - THEY DO MAKE A DIFFERENCE on: June 12, 2006, 02:31:46 PM
I have two(2) soundcards on my PC!
I have a cheap crystal fusion PCI sound card(Very Good). And a Griffin iMic external USB sound card($25)!

The crystal fusion work well but the Griffin iMic
shows much lower backround noise due to the fact that its not proccessing the audio inside the noisy
environment inside the PC case..

I used it on PSK and get exellent IMD reports with
40-50 watts out on my ProIII..

I will buy another USB soundcard soon to replace the crystal fusion and free up some IRQ's and a PCI slot for another I/O card.

59  eHam Forums / DXing / QSL Card from DX Manager on: June 09, 2006, 03:05:45 PM
I leave it blank! Most managers have rubber stamps or labels for thier return address.

For manager cards thru the bureau.I print the backs
of my cards myself with a inkjet printer!
I print a box above the worked stations call
that says "Via Manager" so the bureau knows
who to route the card to..

Check Qrz.com and the internet of the dx stations
call there may also be aditional info on if they will
take direct/SASE, Bureau ,or if additinal postage is
required with the SASE! Some stations I found have
more than one manager.Like one in europe and also one
in the US or canada.Making it easier.
