1  eHam Forums / Site Talk / Illegal CB amp for sale in Classifieds on: September 07, 2008, 11:31:35 AM
You know something , I recently started coming to Eham to research and get answers to some of my questions . I have been reading the post on these CB amps for weeks now . yes these things are illegal , yes I do know a few hams who have takin these amps and made the put out a clean signal .The thing is , these amps end up on 27mhz and 28mhz and just cause problems to our service .
My problem is , there are a choice few of you guys on here who have a greater techincal back ground in electronics then most and you talk to many of the posters as if we were the dumbest people in the world because we lack the back ground you have. Why do you feel the need to act like this twards others ?
I took my Novice test in 1992 and I did not memorize the answers I learned what i needed to know. I am now a General and I enjoy this hobby . I too like to tinker and thats how I learn. I open  one of the older hand books and read I have long since stopped asking most hams about things I dont understand because of their attitude . there for I open the book and learn on my own . My Elmer( may he rest in peace) was the type of  guy who would be more then happy to sit down with a new guy or someone who doesnt understand something and work with him and help him to understand . I dont see that here . Not every ham has remembered everything. That does not make him stupid  or a bad radio op.
One thing that I will say and anyone of you so called KNOW IT ALLS should know this CW is still the most reliable means of communication there is. We all know why the test were dumbed down , it was a measure to sell more rigs. with having to learn CW it was stopping alot of people from getting a license thus fewer radio sales . CW is not hard to learn . yes it may be for some and I understand why. I taught CW to a class of I will say 15 or so people , we had one guy who was an engineer and that man made learning CW such a major feat , and he felt he needed to pick apart every aspect of CW to the point where he never learned it , got upset and left the class . if I remember right . all but a few passed thier test .CW should have never been dropped . I am a truck driver and I run HF in the truck . like right now as I write this post, the bands are in ruff shape and I have only heard one SSB station all morning , what I did hear were several CW qso's going on and they were just as clear as could be .I grabbed my paddle the last time I was home and now have them in the truck with me . I cant send while I drive but when I am on my 10 hour and 34 hour breaks , I have been having a blast on CW.the pile ups are great. As far as these CB amps . I am so tired of driving and trying to have a QSO and hearing these dirty things wipe out my front end . And yes I have had many CB rambos ask me how to get a  ham ticket ,only to hear them tell me ( if I had a radio like yours I could talk over everyone) needless to say I will not tell them how to get a license I have spoken to hams on the air and they have brought that CB mentality with them and it makes  me sick , there is no talking to these guys to try and get them to understand that this is NOT CB its a different world here. The reason why alot of hams are asking about these amps is the cost factor , most mobile HF amps are expensive and I can here the response now and have read the responses from the choice few on cost. Not all of us are fortunate enough to have jobs that allow us to go out and throw our credit card down and say, I'll take that one .So we look for options .Its not that we are cheap , we just cant afford to shell out 800 plus dollars for a mobile amp . I know for a FACT that you , the choice few here on EHAM have discouraged many good guys from getting into this hobby because they have come here and read the way you bash people. And this has left them with the feeling that ALL HAMS ARE THE SAME so they have opted to stay away from the hobby . This is a sad thing because many of them have solid electronics back grounds. Some of you guys on here need to stop and take a look at what you are doing .
For the guy with the DX call, I too will soon be among many who will be leaving this country to live elsewhere .But I bet you will want to try and bust the pile up when you hear me on the bands calling CQ DX
Heres a great idea , how about instead of bashing those who ask about these amps ,share your knowledge, try telling us how to make these things put out a clean signal. how about doing that , and in doing so maybe, just maybe it would open up a market for affordable LEGAL HF MOBILE AMPS But no , thats to much like being a good ELMER thats to much like being a a good ham .
GONE ARE THE DAYS OF THE ELMER WHO TOOK GREAT PRIDE IN HELPING OTHER HAMS NEW OR NOT

Oh by the way , what makes you think a eight year old could not pass the Extra test ?
and would someone please tell me what is the reason for the absolute hatred of the G5RV .
It must be nice to be able to go out and throw your credit card down and buy top of the line gear.
Man you guys are just unbelievable. To the guy who asked about this amp, if you are new to the hobby , go find yourself an old timer who likes to teach and spend some time with him , you will gain more knowledge then you will ever imagine and he will more then likley make these KNOW IT ALLS look like idiots

you know something , you remind me of a ham here in my area who was the type of guy who could figure out a two page long, algebra problem in his head in a mater of seconds, and talked down to  people how could not do the same . One of his biggest things was cash registers that showed change due , I swear I thought that man was going to have a stroke one day talking about it.
There would be a bunch of us sitting around and one of us would ask a question and he would go off " you dont know this " how stupid are you I just dont get it , your a ham  and your supposed to know this ...BLA BLA BLA BLA .
Now my Elmer ( may he rest in peace ) was the type of guy  if I were to ask him about this , he would have sat me down, and he would have shown me why these amps are no good and then I can hear him now , how would you like to take one and clean it up .I have often thought about getting one of those things and sitting down with one of several engineers I know and seeing if we could make it put out a clean signal on HF . As a matter of fact , I know a few hams who have done this I have talked to them on the air with a Palomar amp that was cleaned up and let me tell you the things work great .
As far as new hams , I am not thrilled with the way they dumbed down the test because I know when I took all of my test . I studied I did not memorize the answers. I do  not remember everything I studied about ham radio , thats why I will always go back to the books when I need to figure something out . I do not like the fact that CW is no longer a requierment to get a license .
I am a truck driver and I am sick to death of all these 11 meter morons talking about SWING and DEAD KEY and so on . I am tired of going down the road listening on HF and having my radio totally desensitized from these unfiltered amps .
My point is ,learn how to be a Elmer stop talking to people like you are the know all be all of ham radio , this is a good subject.Whats really a shame is  , some of these amps would make fantastic HF amps if the makers would just do the right thing .
Oh do I miss the days when you could sit down with an old timer and ask all the questions you wanted and he would guide you through . NOT MAKE YOU FEEL STUPID
