eHam Forums / Mods And Repairs / RE: Mars mod for FT-60 ?

"maybe all the folks who want to do a "MARS/CAP mod" should ask in the MARS forum and see what the answers would be"
I thought the idea of a "mods" section would be for this reason...
I love how the first thing is that everyone is quick to jump to up on there soap box and question the person about the who/what/where/when and why they are thinking about doing this mod when really what should be happening is people actually giving some advice.
... Radio police everywhere!!
Good luck if you do carry out the mod, i hope you have some success with it.
i thought this hobby was about fun and playing with radio/ electronics not pretending to be the FCC.

The 60M channels are memory # 601, 602, 603, 604, 605. They will still be there if you reset the radio. I have no idea why they numbered them so high.
Simple.. 60-1, 60-2, 60-3, 60-4, 60-5. seeing as they are the "60m" band channels. "if i dial to the 60m freq and transmit, will it work or what" ?? um, try it and see. key up into a dummy load. the worst it will do is not tx. im surprised this question even had to be asked.

eHam Forums / Mods And Repairs / RE: FT-950 not powering up , MANY have this failure
|

Understood. I'll go so far as to say that you'd probably have to do something REALLY WRONG to blow the PA drivers or finals in the FT-950 (especially barefoot, running no amp). Modern PA ciruits in these rigs are designed to handle twice the RF output which the ALC circuits are electronically limited to allow.....plus the switching foldback protection cicuits. Mine failed when the power supply voltage went up to 16V instead of the 13.8V that should be run at. no over volt protection or anything. Yaesu were happy enough to repair under warranty though. bless there cotton socks!

I can use my Prolific USB to Serial converter fine on Win XP but i cant get it to connect on either of the 2 laptops i have running Win 7. i have tried a whole bunch of things, different usb ports, different com port #'s, set to hardware handshake. im using the same baud rate as well.
The more i try and get it going the more i think its a Win 7 issue. the fact that 2 separate laptops with win 7 and latest drivers for the usb to serial lead and it wont go. but first time every time plugging into the laptop with XP.
I also noticed that running HRD 5, it would connect to the radio but then after a while just stop working like iv unplugged the lead or something. the only way to get it working again is to unplug and plug the usb converter back in. once again not a problem on the XP machine.

eHam Forums / Elmers / RE: Alternate mic for Icom 7000

The SM 20 is a nice desk microphone and works well with the 7000 in a base station environment. But, the HM-151 works just as well. And before having the modes done to it, I would suggest you try the radio out first with the mic stock. The later manufactured HM-151 mic's do not need the AB5N modes. And I have seen some of the older ones that it did not make any difference. So, before sending the microphone off , I would test it first. You might find it does just fine as it is. james WD5GWY
Iv got a brand new 7000 (less then 2mths old) and the HM-151 is very average, no different to the original. you would think that after this many yrs of production but it doesnt seem to be the case.

Power supply has been "upgraded" to a fixed voltage now, although makes it a little bot of a pain when it comes to project work. I am how ever a little shocked i guess that there wasn't some protection in the radio but a simple fix and its all good now

eHam Forums / Misc / RE: Is it considered "bad-form" to have a mobil radio professionally installed?
|

After spending alot of time in the professional installation game, if its a brand new vehicle and you are unsure what can come out easy and what doesn't and where air bags are and critical wiring is located then it may be a good idea to have one carry out the task.
Like others have said though you could luck out, i have seen alot of "cowboy" work where the installer does a rush job because they quote low on the job. I worked at a company who basically set 1hr as the bench mark for almost any install so when there was a custom type job it made it hard because the job was low paying and the faster the job got done the better. I then moved into another place where time and money was not an issue and it was usually alot of comm's gear being installed into brand new cars with all the factory documentation and advisory as for where equipment could and couldn't go. I picked up alot of skills here and made the finish product look like a master piece.
What i'm getting at here is it can be a good idea if they person doing the job has pride in the task at hand but you can also get bitten by a company just trying to pump out another quick install. If they are not use to the equipment it could be more hassle and confusion for them.
Do some research if you can, explain in good detail what type of job your after. it may cost you a little more but hopefully the finished job puts a smile on your face.

eHam Forums / Mods And Repairs / Yaesu FT 950 - No RF output.

Hi folks, so the story goes, my son got into the radio room and found the variable voltage knob on the power supply. 16+volts while the FT950 was turned on. Now there is no RF output.
I have gone through and checked the menu to make sure its still set at 100% power and i have also performed the full reset on the radio hoping, just hoping it went into some silly state because it noticed the voltage increase but no luck.
from 160 - 30m there is less then 5w output and from 20m - 6m it goes as high as 8w. My thoughts are that the PA transistors have not liked the extra couple of volts one bit and have packed it in.
Your thoughts? Cheers Jono VK6NDT

I'm a bit of a newcomer, but 20 meters is showing signs of life. I heard Australia VK3MO at 5:11 UTC (last night to me) on the JO32KF remote receiver in the Netherlands (i forgot who he was QSL'ing), and a California ham had great signal into Europe as well around then. China hams were heard twice on the same receiver today.
That's some healthy distances.
You'll always hear VK3MO no matter what the conditions. look him up and have a look at the antenna set up. As for the Northern part of VK6. it seems that there is nothing but a hell of alot of noise. about s5. the only thing i can hear are the near by plasma screen tv's. i hope the bands show some love to us down under.

eHam Forums / Computers And Software / RE: HRD 5 DX Cluster
|
on: June 13, 2010, 06:55:55 PM
|

Got It Working. The trick seems to be that if you go to the IP Server in the "Tools" menu on the main HRD page. If it says it is started already, stop it and start it again then go to the logbook page, change the default node on the cluster to something else, then change it back to the default and hit connect. fill in the blanks and it should work.
