1  eHam Forums / Mobile Ham / RE: Dual-band antenna issue? on: May 03, 2013, 05:37:37 PM
I'm glad it worked out for you and wasn't anything serious like the radio. If the antenna was old, well it's always nice getting "new", lol. So you're all set. New antenna and new mount. Enjoy the airwaves, 73, Joe N2LWE.

That's what my problem was. It's amazing that such a small issue, two small screws not penetrating through to the bare metal. Once I corrected this, it's been great since. Let me know if that's what it was. I'm curious. Good luck.

I recently installed a Comet lip mount NMO too and thought when I tightened the allen screws that this made a good ground but my performance was poor also. I took the lip mount off and with a razor knife I scraped the under side of the edge of the tailgate to make sure I was getting a good ground. That was my problem, it's working great now. I didn't realize when I originally installed it that the screws weren't penetrating through the clear coat on the paint. I hope this helps.

Why not try a lip mount?

The OP had. The K400 is a lip mount.
Sorry, not familiar with the K-400

Why not try a lip mount? The one I have swivels so you can attach it to the back tailgate and turn it so the antenna is pointed up and when you open the talgate it doesn't hit the roof either. I was very limited installing mine to a 2013 Hyundai Elantra GT which is a hatchback and had curves in the tailgate but still managed to install it and it works great.

I guess I wanted my cake and eat it too when it comes to being picky with this whole idea of mobile operating. I wanted to do hf in the car but didn't want to go crazy with huge antennas, spending a ton of money on an antenna and limited locations to put it on the car since I have a glass roof etc. I do agree that probably a more expensive antenna will help get stations I may not get with this one, but for me at least at this stage of the game I am having a ball just driving on the road and making contacts around the world "in a car". I feel like a little kid at Christmas, lol. I only paid $69.00 for the antenna so I have nothing to complain about if some stations don't come back to me. Most places sell this antenna for $79.00 but I purchased mine from Cheapham.com. Great man to deal with too. Thanks for the replies.

I've heard pros and cons regarding this antenna and have never worked HF from my car, ever. Always worked out of my shack and I've been wanting to do this for a long time. So I thought the price was reasonable to try it. The results? A+. I brought my not so mobile radio out (Yaesu FT-840) and within 5 minutes I made contacts to Hungary, Switzerland, Italy and Spain from my driveway in New Jersey. So, needless to say, I think this antenna is a great performer. So when I hear the "it's ok for the money" line, I really don't know what that means because what would a more expensive antenna do that this didn't? By the way, my reports were pretty good too from the stations I made contact with. No complaints from me. For the record, yes I did use a tuner.

Yes I have held in the tuner button in long enough. It cycles through real fast and if I key up, the light comes on "high swr". The tuner is an MFJ-969 and the antenna is a Hy-Gain DX77A
9  eHam Forums / Antennas and Towers and more / External tuner on a Yaesu FT-950 on: February 08, 2013, 06:21:00 PM
I just purchased an FT-950 and the internal tuner couldn't match the vertical I'm using so I tried to connect the external tuner I used on my FT-840 with no problem but it doesn't seem to work at all even though I connected it the same way I had it on the 840. Can anyone help. New radio and haven't been able to transmit yet. If I key the radio the "high SWR" light comes on.

Thank you.
11  eHam Forums / Mobile Ham / Side mounted magmount on: November 28, 2012, 10:35:43 PM
Does anyone know if there is such a thing as a side mounted magmount? So you understand, a mount similar to a glass mount where the mount is on the side of the glass but the antenna points vertically. So in this case the magmount would be placed on the side of the metal body but the antenna would point vertically.

I don't own one, but heard many people complain that they are very difficult to program and feel like what they cost. In other words, you get what you pay for.
13  eHam Forums / Mobile Ham / RE: Metal plate with suction cups for glass roof to mount magmount on: November 24, 2012, 06:56:17 PM
Thanks for the education. I think I'm going to try and make my own lip type mount that I can bend around the edge of the glass roof and place something inside the bend so the metal doesn't actually touch the glass and possbly damage it. Because the problem with the store bought type is that the metal being "heavy duty" is too thick and the gap between the glass roof and where the tailgate or hatchback door meet is very small. As for the ground, do you think if I ran a wire from the bottom of the metal bracket that I fabricate and attach it to the metal tailgate, or possibly two wires from the bracket to two separate spots on the tailgate, do yu think that would work as a good ground?
14  eHam Forums / Mobile Ham / RE: Metal plate with suction cups for glass roof to mount magmount on: November 24, 2012, 02:04:33 PM
Sorry, I'm still a little confused. I guess I'm well, nevermind. I don't understand when I read some of you talk about having a ground. If I used a lip or gutter mount the bracket is rubber or plastic coated to prevent scratching and attached to the body with the antenna sitting ontop of the bracket. How is this any different as far as grounding if I attached a metal plate on the glass roof and mounted a magmount on top of that? Please educate me. I'm not being sarcastic, I'm serious, educate me. I want to get an antenna on this car so bad and am running into a brick wall because I need to do this right the first time. I also had a friend bring a lip mount to see if it would work but there is such a tiny gap between the glass roof and the plastic spoiler that protrudes out from the top of the glass on the rear hatch, it's impossible to mount it there. I guess I will have to face the fact that I can't do what I really want to do, having a small antenna onthe glass roof right next to the XM radio antenna.

The Larsen glass mount wouldn't be used on the roof. It would be installed on the side window.
