Good job Rich. I too had a hard time with that one. I had recently got back into the hobby and took a day off work near the end of the expedition. All day with not enough signal to call, then, at 0600z I got him. I felt bad because I could have gone to work that day and still made my QSO. Then, I worked 'em again 2 days later! Frank KG6N

Great ops! It took me 2-3 calls to log him. He had a pretty weak signal on the Hex, but he came back. Good Luck Guys! Frank KG6N

I'm 33 and don't meet many hams my age. AC9DX, thanks, I'm not alone. I was licensed at 12 in 1992 and inactive for the most part until 2011. Now I'm regretting all the KH islands, Peter 1, P5, etc. Frank KG6N

eHam Forums / DXing / RE: Are Antennas really all that?

I know plenty of people with far better and bigger antennas than me that I run circles around. I'd say a beam on the high bands is pretty important. Theres other variables; hilltops, next to salt water, etc. The first 4-6 dbd is most important, then get an amp and learn how to REALLY listen. Look at the dx marathon guys, in the ballpark of 300 countries in a year? Are they using comprise antennas? Probably not, but less than optimum just takes longer and means there will be dx you may not hear. I've only got a hexbeam but don't get denied signals or pile ups more than the locals with a lot more aluminum. The difference is I may spend a little more time at it than some of them. I stilllove the chase, and I seem to appreciate it more when I have to work for it. What fun would it be if I just worked every dx I heard? The challenge makes it fun. Run what ya got and enjoy the chase! Frank KG6N

Nice video. I too went to about 230 countries with a wire or a Butternut vertical and then got a hex beam. Rich, reading your antenna posts and blogs has motivated me to download EZNEC and start playing. So far I'm learnig the ropes, with help from Youtube videos of how to do stuff.
What is the HFTA about? I'd like to monkey around with that too if its useful. Frank KG6N

I went back and used caps lock instead of shift for the capitals and it worked. I little quirky, but oh we'll. Wb3cqm, Jim, message me what expedition you choose, and I'll make a vote for you. Frank KG6N

I need it for an ATNO as well. A lot of these make me regret the time I was off the air in High school and college! If I hadn't gone QRX for all those years, I'd have them all by now. I suppose that would be sad, Having them all worked so young. At least I've something to chase. Frank KG6N
