1  eHam Forums / Computers And Software / RE: Help! Need help finding usb to serial controller driver for Chinese radio on: November 22, 2012, 12:45:24 PM
Windoze 7???
what version ??

Windoze 7 Premium  is really Windoze 7 BASIC.

Windows 7 Premium will not run most programs written for XP.

You have to use "XP Virtual PC" (64 BIT)

XP Virtual PC will NOT run under Windows 7 Premium.

To run XP programs under Windows 7 you need to upgrade to Windows 7 PROFESSIONAL or ULTIMATE, and then use  "XP Virtual PC" emulation.
2  eHam Forums / Repeaters / RE: Travel Plus for Repeaters Software - access to repeater database? on: August 10, 2012, 06:05:41 PM
From your callsign I am guessing that you are in CA near various mountain ranges.

You wrote that you wanted to:
"select all repeaters by City and then create an excel spreadsheet that I could import into the radios"

Accessing the TP DB by city name is not an optimal way of doing this.

In areas near mountains you will miss a lot of coverage from repeaters on the mountains that are not listed as being cities in the nearby coastal areas.
I am in the Piedmont of North Carolina, and there are repeaters on the top on mountains that are 4000 feet HAAT, much  higher than from my home that I can easily work with an HT.

I suggest that you use the "make and save a route" option on the TP map.

Here the  algorithm I use:

1) Open TP
2) when you get to the map page click several times on the map to create a route
3) click on the "Create List" button
4) a spreadsheet like "Repeater List"  listing of repeaters along the route will appear
5) click on FILE a drop down list will appear
6) Click on "Export Repeater Data"

7) a multi-option decision box will appear

Cool if you want a file that you can directly import into programming software go to step 20
9) if you want a spreadsheet file go to step 10

SPREADSHEET

10) go to the sub box "Specify Format"
11) click on the File format you want
12) a new decision box will appear
13) name the file and click "SAVE"
14) close TP and import the file to your spreadsheet

15-19 intentionally left blank

PROGRAMMING SOFTWARE FILE

20) go to the sub box "Set Pre Defined Format"
21) click-on the "Radio Programming Format" button
22)  a new decision box will appear
23) name the file and click "SAVE"
24) a "xxx.tpe" file will be generated and saved
25) close TP and import the file to your radio programming software.

I personally use TP and KG-UV Commander,  and prefer the ".tpe" file method (steps 20-25).

3  eHam Forums / Repeaters / RE: Questions on CTCSS and P/L on: October 23, 2011, 03:12:17 PM
I am programming my Wouxun HT and I need to clarify something.  O assume that when a repeater lists a PL tone it is the CTCSS tone that I need to use when I transmit to the repeater.

My software lists these as both encode and decode.  Am I correct in assuming that the encode is what I use?  I am guessing that the decode would only be used to block reception to only signals that use that tone, and I don't want to do that.

.

Most amateur repeaters only use input encode, that is on the input frequency to the repeater.
Most do NOT ouput a CTCSS tone.
If you use DECODE CTCSS in your HT, on most repeaters you will not hear anything, because your HT must hear the correct hearing a tone to open the squelch.
The squelch will not open because  it is not hearing any tone at all.
4  eHam Forums / Misc / RE: thanks for comments about morse in movies interesting , another movie ? please on: March 05, 2011, 09:52:02 AM
Hi, ham s,  thanks for comments on code in movies. I have another question not totally ham related, but having to do with movies. I remember " Colossus the Forbin  project" the one where the computer teamed up with another and took over the world . Was there a second movie or book ( both )  did they figure out how to disable it ? guess I could look it up on web, just curious  kg4ymc
In one of the Early Mickie Mouse cartoons there is a portion where Mickey is on a train following another train and trying to get it stopped.
You hear the station agent sending a message in  International Morse to the next station. The message is repeated four or five times.
All it says is says is CQ CQ DE and a W6 callsign.
I don't remember the call exactly, but I remember looking it up. It was a real callsign that came back to a Ham who I guess was a Disney employee.

In the movie "Marooned" starring Gregory Peck  you hear RTTY during a rocket ship launch & in several scenes where you see various spacecraft moving in space.

5  eHam Forums / RFI / EMI / RFI from Electronic clock on: November 27, 2010, 05:58:01 PM
I just removed from my shack a "Micronta Electronic Flourescent Display Alarm Clock"
 Radio Shack Catalog Number 67-753B.

The RFI was making 2m reception impossible anywhere within 30-35 feet of the clock.

The Clock was generating RFI from 500 KHz to over 200MHz.
The RFI was especially bad from about 125 MHZ to 174 MHz.

The RFI consisted mostly of a loud buzzing peaking about 149 MHz.

Applying Chokes to the power cord did not significantly reduce the RFI, apparently the RFI was being generated inside the clock and propagating directly through the plastic case of the clock.

6  eHam Forums / Misc / RE: Should basic literacy be a requirement for a license? on: August 17, 2010, 06:53:57 PM
Basic Literacy is required.
It's just not explicitly stated.
You have to read the questions on an exam to answer them.
The requirement for basic literacy is subsummed in the required method for taking the test.

The King's English is not American.

Which accent would you decree to be the correct one?

New York (niue Yawk), New Jersey ( new Joisey),Ebonics, Redneck, Valley girl, Minnesota(EH?), Cincinnati Dutch,Southern (Y'all),  spanglish?   Wink
7  eHam Forums / Mobile Ham / RE: K Band Radar on: May 23, 2010, 09:42:31 PM
Many states like North Carolina require POs to be licensed by the states police standards commission to OPERATE speed radar and Vascar.
The idea is that the police officers must know exactly how to operate and read the results from a radar unit.

NC OPOTC ( the NC State police training standards commisssion) also has NC state technical regulations for speed radar.
They exceed the FCC regulations by quite a bit.
NC also requires  annual testing and calibration of every police speed radar and Vascar unit.
8  eHam Forums / Station Building / RE: Water Pipe Must Be Connected to Ground Rod? on: April 13, 2010, 07:02:55 PM
Are you sure that the cold water pipe that you connect to is indeed metal going all the way into the ground?
Just because you have copper or iron pipe inside your house walls does not meant that metal pipe continues underground.
My house was built in 1983. It has copper pipe in the walls above ground level, but where the water service comes up thru the slab and connects to the house you can see that the exterior service " Pipe" is really a 2 1/2 inch O.D. black plastic hose.
Verify! Dont assume that your inground water pipe is metal, just because where someone connected to it above ground is metal.
