16  eHam Forums / Digital / RE: PSK REPORTER- HOW TO INTERFACE THE INTERNET? on: January 13, 2013, 05:13:33 AM
Thank you for your reply and the information. I have noticed in my readings that many PSKERS using applications other than FLDIGI report their success in configuring their applications to report to the PSKREPORTER Site. I have browsed around in my FLDIGI application but without some instruction... I am not about to make many changes now that is is working fine. HIHI.

Don,

In Fldigi, go to the "Configure" menu, "Misc" tab, "Spotting" tab, make sure that check marks are in all three boxes (Automatically spot.... Send reception report.... and Report rig frequency...).  The Host should be report.pskreporter.info.  The Port is 4739.  Click "Initialize" then "Save" and "close".

Now in Fldigi's main screen, you'll need to click the "Spot" button in the upper right and you should be good to go.

Note that PSKReporter works best when you are using the SignalBrowser view.  So, "View" menu "View/Hide Channels". To turn that on.   The number of channels can be configured under the "Configure" menu, "UI" tab, "Browser".

All of this, and much much more, is available at http://www.w1hkj.com/FldigiHelp-3.21/index.html - Step-by-step directions on how to configure EVERYTHING in Fldigi. If you look on the right-hand column, there is a label for "PSK Reporter"

Also, I strongly recommend the LinuxHam mailing list on Yahoo Groups.  That is the support list for all Fl* programs for Linux and OS X.  Great support for any question you may have regarding Fldigi, and much more timely than posting on a web site forum.

17  eHam Forums / Digital / RE: TIGERTRONICS SIGNALINK WITH A MAC COMPUTER on: December 26, 2012, 11:37:20 PM
W6PJJ,

Did you ever get this working?  The SignaLink USB is probably the simplest interface around for getting on the air quickly.

In Fldigi, you simply need to choose USB Audio Codec for both your input and output sources. That's it.

Interesting that you had some luck with the PL2303 for PTT.  For the most part, the Prolific chips are some of the more troublesome chipsets for OS X (poor drivers), whereas the FTDI and Keyspan are much better supported in OS X (especially the Keyspan USA-19HS). Of course, you won't need that for PTT any longer with the SignaLink.

Ever since you got your Mac, you've had troubles with the USB...lots of time spent looking for documentation on what is a standard USB port; something I can't figure out, but I hope you got it working. If not, feel free to shoot me an email at k3dcw at arrl.net.

18  eHam Forums / DXing / RE: Why do some hams mimic the accents of their DX targets? on: December 26, 2012, 06:06:28 PM
Not "DXing", per se, but I hear it between Americans too.  It seems like anytime you put two Americans on the radio talking to each other, before long they both end up sounding like they were born and raised in southern Kentucky; sounding like two truckers from the 70's CB movie craze.

What is it about a microphone that does this to people???

Do you have the "monitor" feature turned on on the TS590?  Is that what you're hearing.

Also, check to make sure you have the correct audio source/target selected in Fldigi.

Finally, in Fldigi, go to "Configure", "Sound Card", the select the "Right Channel" tab.  Make sure it is all turned off unless you specifically KNOW 100% that you need one of these turned on.

Hope this helps.

20  eHam Forums / Computers And Software / RE: What routers are Ham's using that are RFI FREE on: November 22, 2012, 10:11:33 AM
Hello everyone!  I have been bitten by the router RFI bug.  It is wrecking my world of VHF as we speak!!!  I have tried to shield the router and that didn't work at all.  I pulled that thing apart and mounted it in a metal enclosure.  I then powered the thing from a sealed lead acid battery that I precharged.  So with those things out maybe someone out here can lend me their recent experiences to helping me out with my RFI.  Yes I have searched the forums and found some but I am looking for some that have wireless G at minimum hopefully N only time will tell.  Some of the early routers that were in metal frames were very well shielded but were not up to today's standards of communications.

Either of the Apple routers, but specifically the AirPort Extreme: http://www.apple.com/airportextreme/  It is a VERY quiet (RFI) router.

And, no, you don't need a Mac to use it.  You can download the AirPort software to Windows and get it running quickly.

Check out JustHost.com.

Very inexpensive, very reliable, very few (if any) limitations (bandwidth, site size, etc).

Sounds like you might have the squelch set too high.  To the right of the waterfall is a slider that represents the audio squelch.  If it is set too high, you won't get decode even if it is showing in the sidebar.

Slide it up/down to adjust and you should get decent decode.

23  eHam Forums / Digital / RE: JT65-HF Log QSO no correct on: November 13, 2012, 04:08:27 PM
The different values for signal report are caused by operator error...namely, double-clicking on the call window instead of using the two rows of buttons. Each time you click on the QSO window, it changes the log to match the measured signal report from THAT transmission...not necessarily the one you started with.

W6PJJ,

Have you got this resolved yet?  I sent you some suggestions on the other site where you posted this same message.

Check there for my input, along with that of a couple of others.

26  eHam Forums / Digital / RE: JT65 on Mac? on: March 09, 2012, 02:10:20 PM
There are a few ways to do JT65 on a Mac.

The first is to compile WSJT for OS X, which isn't too simple, but if you are comfortable at the command line, it is not too difficult either.  You need to be comfortable compiling programs and running from the command line, and you'll need to buy the latest xcode pack from the App Store. Directions are included when you download the WSJT source code.

The second is to give JT65-HF a try.  It is a Windows program (there is also an Ubuntu-linux version...no OS X version (yet!)) but it runs just fine in WINE/Crossover. I use it in Crossover for Mac with great results.  It does require a bit of configuration, but works great once it is setup. JT65-HF is a GREAT program in that (unlike WSJT) it is JT65 only, it supports multiple simultaneous decodes, and is extensible with the use of JT-Alert (also runs in Crossover).

You could try running it in a virtual machine (Parallels/Fusion) but I've found some issues with that from time to time.

Lastly, as a last resort, you could use bootcamp to boot into Windows when you want to run it.

I strongly recommend trying it with Crossover.  Crossover is the paid version of WINE and the latest version (v11) has some great audio support that makes JT65-HF even easier to run. Feel free to email me at my call @ arrl.net if you want some help getting JT65-HF setup in Crossover.

That's a pretty broad brush to paint with.  Very typical for a Troll, but I can't resist replying to the post.

I am 44 years old. I take pride in being a great dad, a loving and wonderful husband to my wife of nearly 20 years, and a stellar (award-winning) professional...and I am an active ham.

Am I as active as most?  No. I only have a couple thousand QSOs over the last 3 years. However, I do find time to make a few QSOs a week.

How do I do it?

Well, for starters, I work shift work (day/eve) so when I am on eves and the wife and kid are away at school during the day, I get on the air.  Of course, this is usually while I am doing the laundry too (I don't ask my spouse to do it...do you?) so I may have to take breaks between QSOs to fold laundry, but that's the price I pay.  Or, when I get a week day off and I clean my entire house (so that my wife doesn't have to do it!  again, do you do that?) while the family is at work/school, I may get on the air for 30 minutes or so before they get home.  Or when I get home at midnight and the whole house is asleep, I get on the air for an hour or so... and then I am still awake in the morning to see the family off to work/school.

I don't get on the air when the family is home, or when I am home on weekends, or when I need to take my daughter somewhere, or when there are chores to do or errands to run.  I do all of that first, THEN make time for me if there is any time left.  My wife is in LOVE with my hobby, because when I am doing it I am at home.  I can do it while doing other things (like laundry, cooking, etc) and I make sure that her weekends are "chore free".

And my hobby NEVER interferes with my work....the work pays the bills to allow me to enjoy my hobby (I can't even fathom the connection you seem to have made between poor employees and ham radio) and I would never allow a hobby to interfere with my professional career.

So, the next time you meet me on the air and want to criticize me and tell me how I'm a bad parent/husband/employee, remind me to tell you about my daughter with the 4.3+ GPA in an honors STEM program who has my undivided attention even if I can't understand most of the math she does for homework; my wife who is the love and joy in my life and who hardly has to lift a finger at home because I have done it all; and my job in which I am a recognized and awarded superior performer.

However, at the end of the day, does it really matter?  Who made you the "Ham Radio Moral Police" responsible for deciding who is a good dad/husband/employee.  Get a life!  I have a very rewarding one that happens to include Ham Radio.  Do you?

Dave

Show me an Active Ham Married with Family and Job and I'll show you.....

A lousy Parent
An unhappy spouse
A poor employee

This assertion is so easily supported that it needs no references. As surely as obesity is rampant in the hobby (and increasingly the nation).  If you know Married/employed/with Kids Hams, they are probably failing in their lives.  Start with the Wife (Don't ask him).  Ask her if she's proud of her "Ham Husband"!!!!  Ask her if she is fulfilled? If the Ham spends time with the kids?  Does he read books? (unlikely)

Many (if not most) Hams "go dark" during the years of life when they pursue career and build a solid family. Still there are many who do not.   Active hams as described are seldom achievers as a Spouse, professional or Parent.  Tell them so!

So the next time you're on the air and meet one of these Hams tell   them to get off the air and "get a life"!  (Of course they won't, but you'll have made your point!)
