I didn't like all of the crap I had to do to use my computer. So I bought an NUE-PSK modem. Very small with a self contained display. Just buy the correct cable for you radio hitch up a 12V supply or use use batteries and hitch up a keyboard and your on the air. Review here before you buy.

eHam Forums / Station Building / RE: Looking for ideal CW/Digi/CAT interface device

Hi: After using the Tigertronics I opted for the NUE-PSK all in one modem and interface. It does PSK-31, RTTY and CW all you need is the special cable for ICOM and a KEYBOARD and your on the air. Best of all the device is portable and can run on 12V or 2 9V batteries. One thing get the USB memory add on it makes life much easyer.

eHam Forums / HomeBrew / RE: HT with Tiger Tail; Does 1/2 wave beat 1/4 wave

Hi I used to manufacture clip on Tiger tails that fit over an BNC with a clip. They were dual band and worked great. I sold hundreds at $4 each. The problem is the switch from BNC to SMA for most HT's. Anyway they do work and 1/2 wave is awkward because of it's length. They also improve both xmit and rcv with rubber ducks.
Go for it.

I appreciate your point of view. Some people are really good at CW and some will never be. I was one of those who despite a lot of practice was never very good at it. I became an extra class when the rules were changed to 13 WPM. I do not operate CW at all because I could never get good with a paddle and could only use a straight key. To those of you that are good at CW please enjoy it but don't tell people they are not a real HAM because they are not good at CW. I am now enjoying PSK31 and the ease with which I can communicate.

Hi:
As soon as I get it and it's up and running I'll let you know how I like it. And yes I got the letters wrong.
I built my own magloop from copper water pipe and I'm going to give portable operation a try.

I'm new to PSK31 I bought a Signal Link USB but got tired of all the wires and having to plug in my laptop and the room it took. So I just ordered the PSU PSK31 modem, a mini keyboard and Type #1 cable. I am going to sell the Signal Link any thoughts on the $$ I should ask? Any thoughts on getting started? so I don't have a hassel.

eHam Forums / CW / RE: Copy CW in your head

FROM Mark KC3JV: CW is a skill that not everyone can become really proficient at. The military used to weed out people who just didn't have it. I gave up trying to get to 20 WPM and only achieved my Extra Class when 13 WPM was acceptable. My wife was a HS Steno and typing teacher. And said: anyone can type but really speedy typing is only accomplished by a select group of people. If you really don't have it go for PSK31 like I did.

I worked in the power industry for 14 years and transformer oil is basically mineral oil. The mineral oil in transformers is now 100% synthetic but the drug store variety which is natural will work well.

I am a Chemical Engineer and will tell you that hot melt glue is Butyl Rubber of various melting points. It has a decent dielectric dissipation factor but the best low loss plastic is Styrene, Polyethylene, Teflon (TM).

eHam Forums / Antenna Restrictions / RE: No radials for my vertical antenna ! Any alternative solutions ?

Massimo:
Look up the Petlowany Antenna. It is a helical coil made to resonate on the band you want. You can make one for each band. Another alternative is to use a capacity hat ( four wires will do ) and a coil and tune them to resonate. The crossed wires in the form of a cross or "X" should be as large as you can make it. One end of the coil is connected to the cross or "X" , in the center, and the other serves as the connection for the coax braid. You will need one for each band. MFJ uses this technique on one of their verticals.
