1  eHam Forums / Digital / NO WIRES PSK Interface ? on: December 03, 2010, 06:21:30 PM
Recently I have worked several young Hams who were using their school issued netbooks for PSK-31 with no connections.   They pick up audio from the speaker and hold the microphone near the netbook speaker.   The IMD was pretty good and that blew me away.   You do need a fairly quiet shack.

I mentioned this at our club meeting so several of us fired up our netbooks and laptops with our favorite PSK program and started working each other with audio.   We had 2 separate QSO's going and all those non-digital guys left immediately.

Telephone,  cell-phone,  CB,  marine VHF,  ----   they'll all work for PSK !

My 40M vertical is close to the pool so I managed to get hold of the pool ground and the copper propane line then added
4 radials on the far side and it works quite well.   A concrete pool should have a lot of re-bar tied to that ground system.

The fun of hamming is to try all those different options and don't forget to post your findings back here.

The IC-7000 is a very powerful radio but is really a mobile rig --- which means small knobs, buttons and display.   The IC-7000 new will cost $1300 but dealers have  IC-706 Mk II g models that were traded in and they do the same job for less than half the cost.    You can get on 2M Packet with a 'junk' 2M FM radio and a TNC which will cost more than an old radio.   There's an excellent digipeater in Galveston that's seldom used but you would only need a rubber-duck to get into WinLink 2000 and the internet,  The Galveston Co. EOC and the National Traffic System.

If you see this in time ---- come to the North County Bldg tomorrow morning (Dec 4) for SKYWARN Appreciation Day.    You can meet some of us and try out several different radios that will be in operation.

Was I one of the VE's when you tested ?   Hmmm....

If 10M has a good opening there will be some PSK-31 activity.  I've worked a lot of Euro's there.
