As a newcomer to the HF bands just wonder what band would be best to give the furthest groundwave coverage 24 hours a day ?? looking for a band that will give me up to say 150 miles reliably at all times.
keen to give 40 metres a try as I already have a suitable mobile antenna just wonder if ths particular band would suit my above requirments ??
want the groundwave coverage to give me reliable communication from house to mobile.
any advice would as always be very much appreciatted.

Hi anyone tell me if there is going to be much off a loss with using a couple off adapters on top of my vhf / uhf handie ??
the socket on the handie itself is an sma one, , then have an sma to bnc adapter then a bnc adapter to sma adapter on top off this ie. a total off two adapters.
would have used the original sma terminnated coax lead straight into the handie itself but the above adapters just make it a bit easier when taking out the set from the car ie. rather than fiddling about with the small sma plug it just a case off a quarter turn off the bnc adapter and the coax is free from the actual set each time I want to remove the set from the car.
just need to know if all the above sounds okay as far as there being not too much off a loss at vhf / uhf freq using these extra adapters ??

Hi wonder how you got on with any off the above software titles that were recommended to yourself for using as a personal repeater ??
in a similar situation here myself in the want for a mini simplex repeater , did consider the parrot type repeater produced by MFJ but came across your thread and was pleased to learn that what looks like the same type off idea ?? is available in one off the links given to you with just the addition off a small freeware programme.
anyone on here running such software ?? appreciatte that obviously a pc is required at all times !!! with this systmn as opposed to the small stand alone type parrot repeater systmn which could be located at a local high spot, so now looking for ideas on just what actual uses I could put this type off repeater to ??
say using two uhf handies, one located at the pc end and one out portable- any ideas on benefits using this software in with the two handies ??

Okay thanks guys so you reckon the extra barrel connector / plugs will not make enough difference in signal loss etc at vhf /uhf to worry about ??
cheers

Anyone advise me on the best solution to the following ??
Have a dualband 2/70 cm antenna on the rear off the car on a boot mount, this particular mount came supplied with several metres off heavy rg58 style coax, say RG58 but to be honest I am not 100% sure what it is, no markings, clear see thru outer cable, looks quality enough ??
anyway planning on running a dualband vhf/uhf handie from within the car and want to have this handie running in conjunction with this dualband antenna, the coax that is on the antenna is a bit too heavy duty for feeding to the set top mounted sma connector so just wonder if it practical enough to use a joining connector along with say a couple off feet off thinner rg58 style coax to complete the final trip to the set itself ??
likely to notice too much loss at vhf /uhf doing this ?? or not enough to worry about ??
only other idea is to change the whole length off coax for thinner rg58 but would prefer to just use the original new stuff if my idea above sounds okay ??
anyone advise ??

eHam Forums / Computers And Software / software for voice inversion scrambling ??
|
on: March 10, 2007, 01:13:01 AM

Okay first off all thanks for the replies guys regards my question on speech scrambling, yep was totally aware that speech scrambling of any sorts is in now way permitted within the terms off our licence.
the question was asked out off pure interest, anything I talk about be it on the amateur bands, 446mhz or wherever is in my mind anyway nothing special !!!!!!!!!! and am certainly not concerned enough to use speech scrambling as to precent anyone lsitening in !!!!
interesting enough this speech scrambling technique within the uk is certainly on the increase, shopwatch, pubwatch and a lot more individuals are now starting to use this technique to at least try prevent the casual listener.
just wonder if they are operating outwith the terms off there particular licence - anyone know ??
belive there is now even type approved 446mhz licence free sets available with switchable voice scrambling- although wont swear that they are infact uk type approved as opposed to just fancy ebay advert wording !!
thanks again

eHam Forums / VHF / UHF / 2mtrs versus 70cm ??

Hi anyone offer me any advice on the following ??
looking to set up a link from my car to my house using either 145 mhz ( 2 mtrs ) or 434 mhz ( 70cm ) will be using a colliner antenna mounted about 30 feet up on both vhf / uhf same power output ( 10 watts fm ) on both freqs and dual band antenna on the rear off the car.
base location is not ideal for vhf / uhf work but antenna will be up in the clear above roof space.
will be doing most off my operating in built up areas within a ten mile radius off my home location. just wonder what freq vhf or uhf is likely to prove to be the best for this type off operation and if a ten mile range is likely to be easily managable given the above equipment ??
regards, john

Okay guys, anyone here any experience off using kenwoods own freeware rig control software designed for the ts480sat ?? having installed the programme was somewhat surprised to see that the actual screen image does not fill the pc`s whole screen and there does not appear to be an option to allow this ??
strangely enough from looking at the sales brochure for this transceiver it shows a pc in the background having a full screen display off this programme ??!!!

Okay if I want to add say a voice keyer software programme to use with the pc / ts480sat what would be required to get the saved audio from the pc to the actual radio itself ?? would I require an isolated audio interface or would a simple data cable consisting off a six pin min-din plug for the main body off the set and two 3.5mm jacks to go into the michrophone and speaker sockets off the soundcard do the very job ??
slightly confused in this side off things if anyone can clarify exactly what I require ??

Oaky thanks so much for your kind reply, I do appreciatte what yo say regards each individuals voice being different, just wondered if the hc4 element was thought to be off any effectivness with this particular set ??
I think the thing with most off these latest modern sets is that you can play about with the tx audio settings so much now that you could probably achive exactly the same HC4 effect from the set itself - correct anyone ??
had a quick search for the article you mentioned but could not find dont suppose you have any other info on it that could help me locate it any easier as I would certainly enjoy reading that.
again thanks so much for your reply and if anyone else does have anything to add with regards achieving good dx / ragchew audion on the ts480sat then please do let me know.
regards, john
