Having just purchased a kenwood ts480sat transceiver am now looking to set the audio up for both dx and ragchew, any suggested starting settings ??
also as I do with most off my newly purchased transceivers now want to add a Heil michrophone, have the heil proset headphones with the hc4 dx insert here just now, just wonder if anyone has any knowledge off using this particular michrophone element with this transceiver ??
also ragchew audio ?? worth adding the heil hc5 insert or does the actual sets adjustable settings almost give you what the HC4/hc5 deliver as standard ??!!
any advice on getting the best audio for both ssb dx / ragchew would as always be very much appreciatted.
regards, john gm1zvj

is there such a programme ??

HI, anyone offer any advice on what extra things I can do to my ready to be erected cushcraft ma5v to help with its long term reliablty etc ??
have often read off probs experinced with high swr when rain effects the antenna, anything I can do about this as living here in scotland, rain can be a very bigg problem at most times off the year !!!
lastly !! any tips on what settings I should set the antenna at for using at the 20 mtr band ssb phone section, would prefer to try get the tuning correct before having the antenna in place but do realise that this may not be possible and furher fine tuning may be required.
any advice would certainly be much appreciatted.

eHam Forums / Elmers / kington / jingtong vhf / uhf handies ???

Thanks so much for the very useful info and also for the link to the www.409 shop.com website it was very much appreciatted. have now got a kington uhf version and also two jingtong versions off this radio ( one vhf and another uhf ) so think you will gather that I am actually very impressed with them for there very low cost !!! dont supose you know how to stop the annoying bleep tones off the operating keypad on the radios ?? is it indeed possible ?? notice that the kington version has a little bell symbol in the top right hand corner off the display screen making me wonder if the keypad beeps are able to be switched on / off. nice to know that the 409 shop sell an adapter for allowing sma / bnc antenna to be fitted to this radio, I have been advised that if I purchase a female to female sma adapter and also a bnc to sma adapter then this will do the same job but obviously there adapter would make a simpler conversion ?? really like the idea off the ext spkr michrophones they also sell so may just purchase a few off these for my radios. lastly !! feel that the antennas may be the thing that needs changed the most on these radios wonder if you have changed the ants on your rdaios and if so what model you used and what differnce did you find in performance when compared to the original short rubber flexable versions supplied with the sets ?? thanks so much once again, john

eHam Forums / VHF / UHF / 70 cm handie ant ???
|
on: August 01, 2005, 03:57:47 AM

Anyone advise me on just what would be a good replacment ant for the short ruber flexiable one on my 70 cm band handie?? have had a look around the various manufactures catalogues etc but to be honest nothing seems to look as if it will be a lot better than what is fitted already and finding it hard to justify paying out on what might not be much better in performance are there going to be much noticable differnce in performance by fitting a dedicated longer 70 cm whip than what is curantly fitted just now ?? the set just now is one that has been designed with a tx-rx freq range off 400-470 mhz so being a broadband tuned ant do realise that performance wont be as good as a band tuned one. so basically what is the best replacment ant I can go for for a 70 cm handie

Thanks so much for your reply, will try and get some off the ant adapters sorted out locally, think the supplied short rubber flexiable antennas are the sets main downfall and an upgrade is now on the cards !!!

Anyone else had a chance to play about with the Kington 3118 uhf handie ?? sometimes sold under the brand name off jingtong these sets are available in both vhf and uhf versions offering wideband ( 136 -174 mhz ) and ( 400 - 470 mhz ) transmision with a power output off 2.5 watts fm.
normally sold for what are sometimes bargain prices on ebay etc.
personally have both versions and must admitt to being initially very impressed with there performance given the low cost off them .
just wonder if anyone else on these forums uses them and if so how you find them to perform ??
lastly !! should anyone here know about these particular sets any ideas on just what antenna socket is fitted to both the vhf and uhf versions ?? appears to be a type off sma socket in reverse ie. the small threaded protruding part off the bnc that would normally be fitted to the top off the actual set to accomodiate the bnc plug is on the actual rubber aerial itself with just a threaded socket on the actual radio body to screw this aerial onto. sound like any type off commonly available antenna socket or is it possibly a one off arrangment that had for some reason be produced for these sets only ??
thank you, john

Anyone advise me what if any range differnces I am likely to find between two identical handies, one operating on the 2 mtr vhf band ( 144 mhz ) and one operating on the 70 cm ( 440 mhz )both operating with 2.5 watts fm and both with there small set top rubber aerial.
want to set up a link between two off these handies and have the choice off going for the vhf or uhf versions but just wonder what band is likely to give me the best all round operating distance when used in a semi built up area ??
any advice as always very much apprecaitted,
john

eHam Forums / Elmers / dummy load ??
|
on: December 19, 2004, 03:33:07 AM
|
|
HI, looking for a bit off advice on using a dummy load I have just purchased, okay want to set up my michrophone sound with the aid off a second hf rx within the shack so thought purchase a dummy load and do some off air shack only testing off it, just to see how things actually sound for myself ??!!
so okay, purchased a small d/load made by " Anli " and known as the " DM-15W " is rated as 15 watt and 20 watt cw, now want to use my main hf set with the testing so with this set being capable off the full 100 watt out will obviously have to turn down the power control to give an aceptable power into this load.
question is ?? given the manufactures stated spec off the dummy load off just 15 watt / 20 watt cw, just how long would it be safe to use in each transmision ?? the michrophone settings etc will be being constantly adjusted etc, so would say 30 seconds each time with say a 1 minute rest in-between be okay whilst working with this particular small d/load ??
also the quoted 20 watt cw level ?? safer to run half this on my ssb testing tranmissions?? just feel with it being a very small d/load then dont want to risk loosing it with feeding to much power into it !!
sorry to go on a bit !! but any advice would be off great help,
regards, john
