We will be purchasing this head set and it works with almost any kind of HAM, FRS/GMRS and professional radios
and also has Bluetooth adapter for using a bluetooth device and radio together.

159 Euros is USD $205 (more or less) Plus Shipping.
With some shopping I'm sure you can find something
that will do the job just as well for less money.

Good luck with your Paragliding Project and be safe! Grin
Are you going to have a formal website about the project
and it's progress, or just post YouTube updates?

LOTS of hangliders, paragliders, off road enthusiasts,
etc. around here use 2m without having licenses. I'm glad
to hear that you aren't going to be like them and flout the law,
wherever your hobby takes you!

I bet some of those guys in the club would be more than willing to help..

Just walk up and tell them... "HEY OLD MAN!  I need some help,
I'm a newbie and I have a question!"

That's funny.

Better yet, walk up to them and say "Hey Old Timer!
I'm a newbie and I have a question......and that guy standing
over by the coffee machine bet his buddy $5 that
you wouldn't know the answer"

W7yen will  probably make you a cable as he sells all sorts on ebay. Just email him and ask if he will. I have bought a couple from him over the years for around 20 bucks and found them to be entirely satisfactory.   Genrlvideo@aol.com :        http://www.ebay.com/itm/8-PIN-MINI-DIN-LINEAR-CABLE-YAESU-FT-817-FT-847-FT-840-/350415986192?_trksid=p5197.m1992&_trkparms=aid%3D111000%26algo%3DREC.CURRENT%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D14%26meid%3D7381095190316509377%26pid%3D100015%26prg%3D1006%26rk%3D1%26sd%3D350415986192%26Frank
Hmmm.....the link above is a Yaesu rig-to Amplifier Cable

W7YEN was the first person I wrote to about this approx 3wks ago.  Whenever I have written to or   purchased cables from him in the past, his response has been within 48hrs.  Given that I still haven't heard from him I thought that he may be out of business.  Guess I am too impatient.

Maybe he's too busy making other cables.
Reading the AT-600 PRO manual, LDG does not
supply a Kenwood cable for this unit.

Like the man said, this looks like exactly what you need:

Here's the manual showing the AT-600PRO hookup:

Props.
Props used for dramatic presentation do not have to do real work...
Chosen for the looks, availability may also come into play.

Yup.
I was in HRO Burbank once and they had some
studio guys in the store renting electronic gear for some
TV or movie production. I think they rented a PROI or PROII.
They liked the color display! Grin
And some other stuff.....the more lights the better.....

I saw a made-for-TV cheesy Sci Fi program once.
Giant mutant bugs or something. The small town Sheriff's
Office had a TS-940 for a scanner by the dispatcher's
desk. I assume they were using it as a scanner, no mic attached.
(Then again, the freq was stuck somewhere on 20m)
Oh yeah, the giant bugs killed the lady dispatcher while
the sheriff's posse was out chasing those sneaky bugs.
Life's a bitch.....

Hi Chuck:

I don't mean to sound like a wet blanket thrown
on your fun, we all like new gear.......but maybe that
amp money might be better spent upgrading your
antenna system. Aren't you still working with a G5RV
or an OCF "multi-band" dipole?

Buying an amp requires buying other stuff too,
(if you don't already have it). A 240v line is nice,
and you'll need a bigger tuner, bigger dummy load,.
Then there are RFI issues you may ( or may not) have
to address.

I guess I am saying that an amp isn't a "magic bullet"
for any station....something that'll "let me work everybody".
(Though they make it sound that way in the catalogs!)

You could put up a Hex Beam (or knock-off of same)
on a heavy duty steel mast for the price of a new AL80B.

Yes, I know you mentioned woking the lower bands,
but sometimes ya gotta look at the big picture.

Good luck whatever way you decide to go.

New X1M MKII Qrp Transceiver - Available by end of year.
20 Watts kit or assembled.
http://www.kightradio.com/X1M-MKII-20-Watt-QRP-SSB-CW-Transceiver_p_319.html

A kit would be very sweet, even SMT.
(Now that Juma is no longer with us......)

There is a 50w external PA currently available:
MX-P50A FT-817 HF POWER AMPLIFIER
http://www.kightradio.com/MX-P50A-FT-817-HF-AMPLIFIER_p_315.html
Only $279.95 (plus shipping of ?)
(Actually says $359.95 minus “your savings of $50.00")
Wonder if ya gotta buy the transceiver to get the $50 discount??

Says “For the FT-817”. Probably just a marketing tool.
Interesting developments.

I think I'll stick with my K2 until more units
have been sold and more reviews written,
on any of this companies products.
I wish them well, though.

Had same problem in another kit which turned out to be a cold solder joint on one of the toroid coil leads.Basically I just used my VOM and checked for component continuity.

Beat me to it.

This is the one of, if not the, first places
to check for a cold solder joint in the XMTR circuit.
Lots of time the enamel insulation in the toroid coil &
bifilar transformer wire doesn't quite get completely removed. Sometimes reheating the joint will do it.

Also.....double check that the leads for the bifilar
(and sometimes trifilar) transformers go into the proper
PC board holes. Sometimes those drawings can be confusing,
especially when you are using the same color and gauge of wire
for both the Primary and Secondary.

Good luck and let us know how it works out for you.

I do all my contests in N1MM, and then export an adif file from it,
and import that into HRD to keep HRD up to date as my master log.

I do my contesting on WriteLOG for Windows.
Yeah, it's ancient but so am I.
I have exported and merged my ADIF files from 2002->Present
to HRD, a version I got a long time ago when it
was still free. HRD LOGBOOK says I have about 28k QSO's.
But when I "open" that log I can't see or access but
a couple hundred of them.
According to the "Analysis"
I am close to getting some long overdue wallpaper.
I KNOW they're there but I can't access/search the QSO's.

Am I missing some obvious Configuration Setup or something?
Would it be easier (more user friendly) if
I broke down and paid for the fancy version?

I just LOVE WriteLOG for contesting,
especially RTTY
(Always have, GREAT RTTY Contest
software! And seems like fewer guys are
writing patches for the new contests (fer WL).
But WL is getting long in the tooth. (Sometimes I
have problems with WriteLOG and Windows 7).
Runs FB on my XP machine...go figure.

Any "Ex WriteLOGGERS" recommend something
similar they like better? Or something little mentioned
besides HRD, N1MM, etc? Time to teachan old dog
some new tricks?

It's late, probably should of posted this after a
good nights sleep, haha!

I tried a 15 band equalizer but it didn't seem to make much difference on SSB. I am considering a 31 band equalizer to get more flexibility within the vocal range of SSB

The 31 channel EQ will make as little
difference as the 15 channel unit. In order to make
the SSB "sound better" you are trying to boost highs and
lows that just aren't there in a received SSB signal.
Due to, as said, the nature of the narrow audio bandwidth
received signal.
You can't boost "low & high audio freqs" that just aren't there.
There are some DSP speakers that can make signals
sound clearer, not sure of that is what you want,
and they are expensive.

I have 2 hf rigs and a scanner. The mixer would allow me to set up speakers
on right and left of my desk and feed audio from radios in various ways.
Shop for USED Radio shack speaker switch boxes.
You can get them really cheap, you will probably need
more than one switch box if you want the "Left or Right Speaker" choice.
Sometimes you can find them even cheaper.
Yeah, they are in cheesy plastic boxes, but they
work fine for these applications!
Like these

Good luck with custom speaker setup!

The IC761 had known issues with plastic trimmers causing intermittent problems and needing replacement after a number of years. There was an Icom service bulletin about it and I had to replace them in the one I had.

Geeze, what a monotonous task.
About how many were there and how long did it take?
Were they all pretty much standard values?

To be honest though, given this is your first rig, I would suggest like one or two of the other posters, that you buy new or used from a reputable dealer. Again I would pay on a credit card.

I agree.....
Most definitely!
New hobby, first rig, lots of questions...yikes!

I would go so far as to say you should NOT buy
your first rig from a private party over the Internet.

(A big reputable dealer like AES, HRO, etc, is different,
they typically come with at least some sort of warranty in writing)
Get an Elmer, or another local experienced ham, and buy locally.
In person.
See/feel/look/listen/transmit with the rig and all
the associated gear hooked up to an antenna...on all bands.
You can meet an experienced ham through a club, a
recommendation from a dealer, or a Web search for
local hams in your area. They will be delighted to help you,
and can give terrific free advice. They will know the right
questions to ask, and the right answers.

In other words.....kick the tires! Grin

I don't mean to sound like a a cynical curmudgeon,
but $900 is a lot of money to send to a total stranger.
And with the vast amount of online fraud these days,
why chance it?

Would you rather walk out of the seller's house with a
smile on your face, knowing you got a good radio, or chew
on your fingernails for a week or two, wondering what or
even if
the radio will arrive and as advertised?

I really want your first experience in ham radio to be positive.
Hope to hear you on the air someday soon.

He would give his callsign and say, "QRZ?" and all hell would break loose for about a minute or so as stations from all over the world began shouting out their callsigns.

This is typical and if you are the DX station and are new
at it....very intimidating....and exhilarating!
My first experience operating DX was from 5R8 (Madagascar)
back in 2000. Certainly not near as rare as South Sudan, but
wanted enough that everytime I got on the air, in whatever
mode, a pileup wasn't far behind. Propagation was outstanding in those days,
so almost everybody sounded loud to me!

It took me a few days to settle into the best rhythm & mode
for me.  But in 2000 I was getting back into ham radio after
a 5 year hiatus. Looking back now, I would have done some
things a little differently.

I was on vacation for a month, not a true DXpedition,
and my sister was living there at the time, so it was an
ideal arrangement. I loved giving out a "new one" to lots
of folks, and lots of folks were grateful and thanked me.
Then again, quite a few were obnoxious, rude, shouters,
cutting in out of turn and disrupting things. It gets real old
real fast when you say "Standby, Standby....
S51 Tango Station ONLY please make your call" and some
jerk jumps in and shouts "Italy Tango Three Alpha Bravo Charlie"
three times.

I guess I am saying that not every DX Op you run into is
going to have ideal skills. We are all human, so cut the guy
a break if you don't like his style, or perhaps a short and
friendly email suggestion about operating practices. Not
all of us can be like the Super Pro DX ops that are on those
"Mega DX Ops". I wish I had their skills, I really do. That
those guys can very quickly pull calls out of gigantic
pileups is amazing.

And sometimes a DX op will just want a friendly rag chew,
like back home, and not work a pileup. Some people can be
staggeringly rude about this. I'd tell them "I'm in a QSO
with XXX station, please wait for us to finish". Or "Tell you what,
I will be checking into the Afrikaner Net Net at 1730z. We can work then".
But nooooooo...Another time
I was running  by numbers for a change and on 7's and a very loud IT3
station shouts at me. I said "Sorry, only 7's, QRZ?" then
he came back again and said that I MUST work him NOW
because HE was going to late for his job if I didn't.
Sorry Charlie. If you give an inch one time in a pileup,
people will run you down like a deer in the headlights at night.
I gave up on calling "Any QRP Stations" or "Any Mobile Stations?"
because I got called by guys obviously running legal limit
into serious antennas. A presumption on my part? Maybe.

Maybe when we get frustrated at the way the DX Op is
handling things we can put ourselves in his shoes.

As for getting LMR 400 at .50 a foot inc.
shipping....HAHAHAHAHA, not going to happen.

You don't know that unless you ASK, do you?
Never make assumptions.

The retail markup on coax sold per foot is huge, %100 or more.
HRO makes more profit in dollars selling 100 feet
of RG-213 than they do selling a $2,000 rig.
(Usually only $25-$30 dollars profit on a rig like that,
depending on the Yen exchange rate.) No money
to be made in selling rigs. It's accessories that make
the money.

Bob Ferraro, owner of HRO, is a wealthy and very diversified
businessman. (And a hell of a nice "regular" and approachable
guy with untouchable business and personal ethics). I've
met and talked to the man on a couple of occasions. When it
comes to HRO, he's a ham first and a businesman second.

He has holdings in commercial real estate, selling aircraft,
and several other businesses. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised
if HRO is his LEAST profitable enterprise. It was his very first
business venture after leaving the Caifornia Highway Patrol
and remains a labor of love for him, and his loyal and long term staff.

I'm sure if he wanted to consolidate and downsize his holdings,
any professional financial advisor worth his salt would advise him
the first thing he should unload is HRO! Huge overhead,
(inventory, rent, labor, rising shipping costs) and a small profit
margin in a depressed economy. You gotta LOVE your business
like that to keep it open these days.

I guess what I am getting at is that HRO doesn't need your money
and yet would even lose a few bucks at the expense of
losing a good customer.

Call me a "fanboy" if you wish, I've been called worse.
Better yet, call HRO HQ and see if they will honor the deal
you think you got rooked out of. If you have the stones......
