1966  eHam Forums / Elmers / RE: High ERP antenna on: February 11, 2010, 11:27:35 AM
"I have LMR-400 run underground to a post in the back yard a safe distance from the power lines."

The "safe distance" of the post depends on the height of the pole or vertical you are using it with. The safe distance from the power lines is generally considered to be TWICE the total height of the pole or vertical.
1967  eHam Forums / Good Seller / Buyer Beware / One More Thing on Check Scams........ on: February 10, 2010, 02:21:15 PM
It is always good to trace IP Address of any incoming e-mails from people responding to your online seller's ad. You can do a Google Search on how to trace an IP Address if you don't know how. Let's just say it's easy. You cut and paste the header of the email into a special search engine. If you don't know how to get the COMPLETE header of your incoming emails, Google that too, or check your email program Help File.

Just because a person's email address is:
GOODHAM@YAHOO.CO.UK doesn't mean the email is from the UK at all, it may be from Nigeria or anyplace else.

Re: Suspect UK Email Addy's....if the scammer is posing as a UK ham or UK resident he will often give a fake (or real) UK address and a UK sounding Telephone Number.
IF the phone number starts +044 (UK Country Code) THEN starts 702, 703, 70x, etc..BEWARE! That 70X number is REDIRECT CODE, usually to Nigeria.

Note: Incoming Google Mail or G Mail will NOT show you the IP Address. Download a free trial of "Read Notify" software. It WILL get the IP Addy off of a Gmail. And tell you when he opened YOUR email, at what time, how long he looked at it, etc. Neat program.

ALWAYS REPORT any suspicious emails. The address is amoost universally "abuse@yahoo.com, or abuse@gmail.com, abuse@xxxxmail.com". Be sure to send the entire email WITH COMPLETE HEADER, Important!
Don't just forward the email. Cut and paste the Complete Header into your email to the abuse folks.

1971  eHam Forums / Elmers / RE: Microwave Energy Question - AC vs DC ??? on: February 09, 2010, 08:18:31 PM
"Of course all right thinking men recognize that the true danger of microwave ovens lie in alerting slimey big lipped bloodthirsty aliens to the presence of humans on this planet."

Which is why it's important to cover all your windows with tin foil, to keep the aliens away. And wearing a foil hat keeps the back helicopters from being able to follow you.

"I have tried ferrite clamps on the mains lead of the rig and computer."
Sorry, in my haste I missed that.
Good luck with your problem.
1974  eHam Forums / Elmers / RE: computer rfi on: February 09, 2010, 12:03:07 PM
Not familiar with Imacs. Is it a laptop? If yes, does it do the same thing when operated off of the battery?
If no, try either operating on battery only, connecting the computer PS to a different main, ferrites on the AC line AND the laptop DC input right next to the computer.

"my shack was a monstrous National NC-183D"
Wow. That was the receiver my dad gave me which got me started in SWL, which led to ham radio years later. Sure wish I still had that receiver. What a fun piece of gear....thanks for the memory.
1976  eHam Forums / Elmers / RE: mobile hf install on: February 08, 2010, 08:04:35 PM
"can you recomend a small leagle amp and how can i tell if it's illegle"

I wouldn't even bother with a "small legal amp".
The legal ones for the QRP crowd, like the small Tokyo Hi Power HL-45B (5w in 45w out $400) or THP HL-450B (50w in 400w out) $1,000 are too expensive.
Even the HF Super Packer Pro kit, 5w in 100w, out, is $429 and you have to build it yourself. (Though that is fun) But they are all legal and cover all HF bands.

For that kind of money buy yourself a REAL radio.
For $350-500 you can get yourself a nice used 100w 12vdc all mode HF 100w radio. A bit more and you can get yourself a new one off the shelf. And you'll be able to operate on HF bands that will open up a lot sooner than 10m will. (When you get your General Ticket).
1977  eHam Forums / Elmers / RE: My first hf rig on: February 08, 2010, 06:01:09 PM
Remember the ANTENNA!!

I liked what Gerald, WB5JEO had to say about this, good advice:

"And keep in mind that the antenna isn't just a thing; it's just about the only thing, when it comes to what you can do.

Any old rig that's still working can outdo any new rig with sufficient difference in antennas.

Consider what you can install and what you want it to do and have some appropriate antenna budget."

You don't want to spend your whole budget, come with all this cool new stuff, and not be able to work many stations because your're trying to load up a long wire between two trees.
1978  eHam Forums / Elmers / RE: mobile hf install on: February 08, 2010, 04:24:10 PM
A 100 watt amp, huh? Sigh....It is a CB amp, right?
Often advertised on Ebay as a "10m Amateur Radio Amp"....ain't no such animal.
Please just don't use it, OK? It's illegal and will put out a crappy signal.
1979  eHam Forums / Amplifiers / RE: Harbach Soft Key & RIGBlaster on: February 08, 2010, 01:10:44 PM
Addendum to above:
I realize that the Harbach is not seeing
the needed "hard ground" via the ACC
connector.

I just don't understand why that would
be so with the rig & amp keying FB through
the MIC PTT with a mic but not the Nomic thru
the MIC PTT. (Which keys the rig FB
but doesn't make a hard ground at the ACC).
1980  eHam Forums / Amplifiers / RE: Harbach Soft Key & RIGBlaster on: February 08, 2010, 01:02:02 PM
I still wonder why the amp keys up fine
on SSB but not on PSK-31, since they
are both initially being keyed via
the PTT contacts in the rig MIC connector.
