31  eHam Forums / Stolen Gear / RE: Crime Solution? Carve SS# Into Radio Front Panel on: April 08, 2013, 11:41:12 AM

Thats what happens when you have a national ID number from
birth to death. Blame the government for this one.

Indeed!
When I worked for the Postal Service our time cards were plastic
"credit card" type cards with a magnetic strip. We would swipe
them in/out of shift. But...they ALSO had our full name AND
Social Security Number plainly printed on them AND with
raised embossed lettering.
The cards were stored in racks
next to the time clocks. Anybody on any shift could walk by
and get your SSN in a heartbeat.

We bitched and moaned for years to get our SSN's OFF
of our time cards, but the P.O. would do nothing, the Union
would do nothing, it was sad.

You hear people get all huffy and puffy and say "I will NEVER carry
a "National ID Card". Guess what? You already do.......

33  eHam Forums / Antennas and Towers and more / RE: SWR vs Tuner vs Amp on: April 07, 2013, 05:59:42 PM
Have you tried running the amp into a dummy load
and testing for this phenomenon?

How "high" is your "High SWR"?
(Sound like you are mesuring this on the rig's SWR Meter, right?)
And your setup is rig->amp->external tuner->antenna, right?

Is this happening on all bands?

What antenna are you using that makes this problem appear?
Need some more info....
Quote

SWR perfect made a few contacts everything great with amp on (Dentron 1000)

turned amp to standby SWR goes High, turned amp off SWR high. Turned antenna selector on antenna tuner to direct SWR drops to 1:1?? the signal is still going through the amp.

This doesn't make any sense. At first glance it sounds
like an amp tuned input problem, but that would STILL
appear with the external tuner set to "Direct".

You are transmitting with amp on standby?
 Need some more info....

Sending raw feces through the postal service is a federal offense, and in today's political/social climate, could be considered a terroristic act,

Human fecal samples are sent through the mail for medical
testing all the time, albeit properly packaged and marked.
I have received these "Occult Stool Sample" collection kits
with a return mailer from my Health Care Provider for years.
(Occult Stool is a blood-in-stool test)

It MIGHT be a violation of 18 USC § 1716 - Injurious articles as nonmailable
But I haven't waded through the boilerplate. Have at it.

Mailing somebody a turd could be construed as "terrorist threat",
harassment, or stalking.......IF it puts the recipient in a "state
of fear of bodily injury".

I could hear the Cali ham but not the ham closest to me.

From what I understand, this is because of skip.

I know a guy named Skip! He lives in Woodland Hills
and installs towers and stuff.

"Skip" is a CB term and probably best avoided
in conversations on the ham bands. Personally I
don't care, <shrug> But some oldtimers/grouches/purists
may give you a hard time.
Just an FYI so you are forewarned.....

36  eHam Forums / Antennas and Towers and more / RE: Fan Radials, as in a fan dipole. on: April 06, 2013, 07:33:16 PM

Sorry, but you are essentially re-inventing the wheel.

Hams have used multiconductor cable, like flat rotor control cable with the wires cut to different lengths as radials for years.  It works!

Yup. Butternut even sells it's STR-II "multiband radial kit" for the
HF6V and 9V made with 300 ohm twin lead, notched to make various resonant
elements similar in fashion as you describe. So Window Line should work the same,
though it may take some experimenting as the other poster said.

The Butternut radial kit is ridiculously expensive! (also contains
enough plain insulated wire for a couple 80m radials)
but still at $170 is insanely overpriced.
http://www.hamradio.com/detail.cfm?pid=H0-004038

I've thought about experimenting with reproducing that multiband
radial kit with Window Line......and if it works well perhaps
selling them at hamfests. But I don't know how well they would
sell or what the price break would be. Hams are notoriously cheap,
and making individual band radials is easy and cheap.

Good luck with your window line multiband radial
experiments.....and please do let us know how it turns
out. I'm quite curious to hear the results, especially the
"weave a third wire as the 10 meter radial between the 2 leads of ladder line" part.

No one missed me, I am sure of that, but how many
others are out there that feel the way I do, and are skipping the
festivities because of a few idiots.

I feel the same way you do, that contests seem
to bring out a lot of "All Knobs To The Right" guys.
But I don't let it ruin my fun, just shake my head and
spin the VFO.

he was screaming as loud as he could AND speaking fast,
V E R Y fast, like a gatling gun or Thompson Machine gun
with
a 1,000,000 round magazine. I couldn't understand crap.

Yeah, this is a pain. We shouldn't have to dial a station
in and then spend 3-4 minutes just trying to make out
the call....ALL because the guy is speaking too fast, with an accent,
and/or using non standard phonetics. Maybe an email to
the OP or club stating this is in order. Same as the AKTTR
situation....

OTOH I did have fun overall with this contest.
More than I expected. My main rig is tits up and so
is my amplifier. So I was running barefoot in a contest,
when I am normally QRO (AL-80A). But I was still pleasantly
surprised at how many stations I could work and who,
with 100 watts into a roof mounted HF6V.
Even got a new one for 40m, D4C. Yeah, I know
it's a monster contest station, but still I was stoked!.
I couldn't get them on the higher bands though....
but I already  have that  prefix  on the higher bands,
but was new on 40m. Ya just never know until ya call!  Grin

"I made my own cable(s) using a 3-conductor cable that I purchased from Radio Shack."

FWIW, when making audio and control cables for the shack,
I've always had better results using this shielded mic cable from
All Electronics. The RS audio cable's "shield" is pretty skint, not
even braided, not to mention the premade cables are expensive.
All Electronics also sells almost any connector you might need.

40  eHam Forums / Elmers / RE: "Silver Label" Kenwood 940s?? on: April 01, 2013, 11:23:43 AM
Seller responded to my EBay enquiry about the
"Silver Label" and "assembled in California":

Quote
Hello and thank you for your interest in the Kenwood ts-940s.

You make a point regarding the "silver label"" and I have replace one of the pictures with a picture of the "silver label" which also shows the California sticker and shows it was assembled in California, which I clearly point out in my description. I think someone else may have the same thought. In addition I would like to update your information regarding the 940s radios. The units assembled at some period after the SN# I have listed, were changed to have serial numbers in the 20 million range. I have obtained and sold four or five of these radios and the radio I have listed is one I purchased in 2011 and used it as my "reference" unit when I checked radios using actual received signals and QSO's.

In regard to the options, you are correct, only two CW filters can be installing and Kenwood offers three CW filters. The 455.0 kHz CW filter are either standard or narrow. My reference to "Loaded" was meant to mean the radio has all of the standard options installed and in the case the standard 455.0 kHz was used in place of the narrow filter.

The 940s radios with the “silver label” with all of the options installed are rare and command a higher price. These radios have all the modifications and are truly the end of a great radio.

I stand behind the radio’s I offer on Ebay, and I believe I am the only seller that will refund the full purchase price including return shipping charges I the buyer is not satisfied with the radio for any reason.

Thank you for you interest

I still maintain his statements regarding the "Caliornia Assembly"
and "low Silver Serial numbers replaced by 20 Million Series
Numbers" to be completely silly fabrications.

At $1,395 he is reaching for the moon.
Then again, it IS EBay.....

No he wasn't.
Nor was he a builder.
I got into QRP because the cheapest transceiver

42  eHam Forums / Elmers / RE: IC-AT500 tuner preset operation on: March 31, 2013, 09:08:32 AM
Quote
For instance when I switch to 75/80 meters the LED's go out, but when I send 60watts out, they light up and stay lit up.  Same on 40 meters.

The HF6V (and HF6Vx) have VERY narrow bandwidths on 80m,
about 50 KHz. Maybe it is asking too much of the tuner if
you set up the presets at the antenna's 80m "Sweet Spot",
then asking it to find a 1:1 match on other parts of the band.
(Of course this does not explain your 40m problem.
That antenna has about 200+ KHz coverage on 40m)

Quote
It should be noted on the 746 meter, it shows near
perfect 1:1 on the SWR meter when I Tx.

On which bands?
If this happens on all bands, then what is the issue??
43  eHam Forums / Elmers / RE: "Silver Label" Kenwood 940s?? on: March 31, 2013, 08:49:03 AM
I sent a message to the seller asking about this
mysterious "Silver Label". There are 10 high resolution
photos, but none show the serial number or the alleged filters
that it has installed. Be interesting to hear the explanation.

Seller has a 1X2 call but it is a Vanity Call, guy
was first licensed in 2009. Maybe he bought this "Silver
Label story" from the guy who sold it to HIM.  Grin

44  eHam Forums / Elmers / "Silver Label" Kenwood 940s?? on: March 30, 2013, 09:20:02 PM
I was perusing EBay for grins and saw this
Kenwood TS-940S listing:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Kenwood-TS-940s-Loaded-has-all-available-options-excellent-condition-/160998224634?pt=US_Ham_Radio_Transceivers&hash=item257c3df2fa

Most of the description is obviously cut and
pasted from Kenwood TS-940S original ad copy.
Then there was this mysterious addition:
(I added the bolds, italics and underlines....)

Quote
the Kenwood radio is serial number 00500387 is on a silver label. The silver labels are on the TS-940s radio assembled in California after production was discontinued in Japan and ended with a 10 million serial number range. The remaining components were sent to California and assembled as completed TS-940s radios. The normal Brown & Silver labels were replaced with a silver label with a low serial number as this radio has. This was soon changed to a 20 million serial number range and used until all the components were exhausted [/i]

I bought a TS-940S/AT new from a dealer about a year and a half
after they first came out. I stillown it. I've read about all the various
issues associated with the different serial numbers, in particular the
lower serial numbers (often having more issues than later ones).

But I have NEVER heard or read anything about 940's with:
1) "Silver Labels"
2) EVER being "asembled in California".
3) Low Ser. No. "Silver Label" 940s being
changed to "20 Million" number "Brown & Silver Labels".

A quick Google search on "Kenwood TS-940S Silver Labels"
shows nothing except the listing of this rig.

Have I been in the dark all these years or is
this what I think it is.... A bunch of.....hoooey!
