Hello Bill(N3WD) I started this thread, and I'm sure we have met as I have attended the Timonium hamfest for the last 5 years, and counted it among the best... I was actually going to query one of your members about why they did away with the outdoor flea market, but you indeed answered that for me... I believe most hams (me included) have no idea of the cost of running such a large venue...I think you put everything in perspective, so no need to beat a dead horse any longer...but I must admit that I have this feeling that next year, your group will find a way to have an outdoor flea market once again... Thanks for all your past efforts...I traveled 270 miles to get there, and never regretted it...and I really liked that Crown Plaza hotel...BOB

Communications Specialists does indeed make the board (or at least they used to)...Two things I might add...#1...I hope your light of hand, and good with close spaces, because even though the 2AT is large by modern HT standards, its still tight work...#2...I believe it was available in two styles...one was a fixed PL frequency, and the other was a DIP type module, that gave you many PL freqs, that you had to make a hole in the HT case, so its switches could stick out externally, allowing you to change PL-s... I had many of the 2AT-s, and they are a great rig, but aside from size, the problem is that you do indeed have to install the PL to use the modern repeaters....73/BOB

At the risk of starting a firestorm, I do indeed believe that the best days of the ham radio flea markets are behind us...Of course we all know the reasons...Flea Bay and the internet, definitely dealing the majority of the death blow, closely followed by the lack of interest in building and buying parts... As for new radios, MOST (not all) dealers can sit behind their 1-800 facade, and probably realize a greater profit than by horse assing themselves across a couple of states to show their wares... I was introduced to the ham radio flea market by my dear friend W2OQI(SK) in 1974, and I believe one of the first ones was LIMARC, possibly at the old Islip Speedway which used to exist here on L.I. When I walked into that atmosphere I thought I was in ham heaven, with hundreds of sellers, and more buyers than I can describe... But alas most(once again not all) L.I. flea markets are now held indoors. I now understand that my last bastion of hope, TIMONIUM has been reduced to one day, and will be all indoors, and of course I understand the reason. So it appears that if you cannot sell all your acquired treasures in your lifetime, they will wind up at the landfill..

Guys... I was not trying to split hairs in categorizing this problem, and of course as K8AXW, and AA4PB, and myself know, it certainly was the exact action of a CROWBAR circuit in action, brought on by the condition I described, so I suggest you file it as such... Thanks to all the group for the advice...Its always a learning experience....BOB

K8AXW...No problem...Well its actually hard to say definitely, but as soon as I increased the RF (which in actuality was just increasing the current draw through the bad joint in the PS), it tripped out to zero...Of course at the time it felt like RF was affecting the crowbar, but now I'm just not sure....So how indeed do you file this one???

Well I caught a break...I finally got off my A.. checked it again on the bench, and this time I noticed that at times it was duplicating the action that had me thinking RFI...It turned out that the positive terminal where it goes through the circuit board into the cap had a loose + terminal that was getting hot and opening and closing....How did it get that way ..possibly quality control issue, but most likely it was partly a QC issue in that it might not have been tightened as much as it should have, and thermal expansion and contraction did the rest... Great to share and learn on eham....BOB

JX & NYY...Something to be said for both your comments, but I will open it up and see what I can see...From my experience in radios, and most things in life, if its been working all along, and then exhibits a problem, chances are something component wise (or life wise) might have changed....unless of course something in my station has changed or opened.... TO BE CONTINUED...

W8JX...Well it appears to be via the crowbar, because shutting it off and putting it back on resets it...I suppose since this does not seem to be a common malady, I will have to get off my dead A.., and open up the case.... Once again tks to all who replied, and keep the opinions coming....

N4NYY...certainly you jest....Of course I don't think that the PS is causing the RFI, but is the recipient...and I have received many suggestions, but no one has addressed the fact that it works perfectly on the bench, as I have noted... Could there possibly be a bypass cap that keeps RFI at bay that has gone west Yes they are fairly simple PS, and I have opened more than one, and fixed my 35A several times, but never has the problem been like this one... I will have to go over to the repeater site with all the info on the supply, and see what they say...

..Thanks to all for your interest and insight...Well all the radios are working fine on the my spare 35A supply, and on the supply that was giving me trouble on the bench it measures 13.66v with no load and about 13.63v with a 20 amp load...I still believe that it is RF related...Why else would it work perfectly in a non RF environment

Thanks to all for the info...Of course the first thing I did was to put the radio on the dummy load...but the question remains...Why does it work perfectly on the bench, drawing 20 amps???

I have been using my 35M for quite a while to power my hf and vhf/uhf stations, and yesterday for no reason it trips out in the presence of even 10 watts of rf...Nothing I can see has changed in the configuration of my station, and the supply works fine on my workbench... I replaced it with a 35A, and problem solved...if indeed nothing changed in my shack configuration, has something changed in the 35M ??

K8AXW.... Thanks for the reply....I guess I should have been more explicit...The negative terminal is not going to gnd directly inside the chassis, but instead goes to what I believe is the SCR for the crowbar circuit...The SCR is mounted on the chassis, but insulated from it, so I don't quite understand how the negative terminal is showing a dead short to ground... As to your other comment about many of the things that are listed on the REPEATERS BUILDERS web site never happen, well I can't say one way or the other, but it is the place to visit to learn about the innards of the ASTRON supplies.. Hopefully there will be some more comments, possibly even from WB6FLY who wrote the mods...BOB

Here is a quote from the very informative and well written "REPEATER'S BUILDER'S" website "I strongly suggest that owners of an Astron power supply make a simple test with a V-O-M. With the output connections open and the power supply unplugged, measure the resistance between the grounding prong of the AC plug and the negative DC output terminal. If the reading is in the megohms, fine. If it is a short, you know what to do"... Problem is I don't know what to do...Mine measures dead short, but the supply works fine? How exactly do I make the negative terminal float.....BOB
