My uncle administered a general exam for an 8 year old who made passed the exam. That's been a point he's brought up numerous times since I got licensed at age 14 and still haven't upgraded from tech.

I can relate to your situation. I've been relatively inactive since I joined the air force in 08' and don't have my parents' nice country house and tower to use. My current setup is an Icom 7200 into a super antenna MP-1 that's clamped to a bedframe in my spare bedroom. It's not pretty and far from optimal but I've logged some decent 10M PSK DX (5040 miles from South Georgia to Argentina last week) with this setup.

Gigaparts has the Ic-7200's for the cheapest i've seen and about $1200 you can get the rig, power supply, and antenna. I splurged and got the AT100ProII tuner and multicam option of color. It'll get you on 40m-6m out of the box if you go this route, just have to pickup the usb cable (same as a printer cable) and hook up your computer for digital ops.

I like the idea of reverting to the roots of ham radio... the days before the $1000 mega rigs. Plus being able to take scrap electronics from garage sales and such and making a radio out of it is certainly cheaper than buying your pre-build "plug and play" equipment. (Though my mobile rigs, A 25watt rodeoshack 2mfm and yaesu ft 817 ruin that perfect mindset...)

theres a bit of popularity. I mainly listed 6meters for the simple fact it would allow a little wider range for a net.
5  eHam Forums / Licensing / FCC releases "No Code" Press release on: January 01, 2007, 12:13:42 PM
I havent been able to find a conclusive answer on WHEN the changes go to affect. Most the posts and releases i've seen list several possible time ranges. does any one know when these changes go under affect?

My Ft 817 has been actting odd recently. I think the preivous owner "played" with the hidden service menu or something because first off the volt meter says 19volts when its plugged to a 12volt supply. I know its rather vague but any help is apreciated.

Hello, I’m a 16 yr old ham and i'm thinking about starting a teen ham operator net, likely it will be on 2m or 6m, depending on interest and equipment situations of participators. I’ve had some of the members of the Central Illinois Radio Club encountered me about starting a net for teens and younger hams in general(21-younger), but only now am I starting to put any thought into it. Unfortunately if I cant get some help with this idea it simply will be a waste of time because face it, who’s going to have a net if no one checks in? If you know of any other teenage ham operators in the Illinois area could you please inform them of my plans and/or have them contact me either on air or by my email. If there is enough interest there might be a net organized, if not the outcome is obvious.

Thank you for your time,

11  eHam Forums / Computers And Software / 70cm to 6m remotely controled crossband repeater on: August 03, 2004, 02:44:55 PM
Ok my elmer WB9DUC told me about how he thought about seting up a crossband repeater on the same grain elevater as his 2m dual site repeater. This elevator is 1 block away from me so i got the idea of wirelessly controling the radio from home... changing freqs , modes, etc...  ive got a new compaq presario desktop w/ network card that i could use w/ the addition of a wireless router at both ends. my idea is seting up a wireless network between the radio and my computer. would  i need to place another computer at the radio or could i hook the radio straight to a wireless router up there.... and if possible what radio would work the best for this application?

15  eHam Forums / HomeBrew / 6m homebrew on: July 16, 2004, 03:23:21 PM
hey KC0QEV

name here is Mykal. Ive got plenty of plans for 6m tranceivers (tube and solidstate) some are low power some are higher power. They are plans out of old cq and qst magazines so some parts may be hard to find but not to hard to replace with newer versions of the part. all I'd have to do is scan them and send them to you if you wanted. also there are some hf homebrew rigs if anyone is interested.
