1  eHam Forums / Misc / RE: Amateur radio is only for rich people on: April 22, 2013, 02:18:47 PM
Whom ever said that amateur radio is "ONLY FOR RICH PEOPLE" is an absolute idiot.

If that were the case I would have to sell my truck and walk.

I have a home that is paid for.

Since I am not rich, I need to get rid of the house and live on the street.

I then do not need social security or medicare.

So much for the sarcasm.

There is a place for amater radio no matter what your economic statis is.

This reminds me of an incident that happened years ago.

I live in the country.

On one 4th of July my neighbor would throw a string of fire crackers out.

After 4 or 5 times, I loaded my black powder Navy 44 cal revolver to the brim and used a paper wad to hold the powder.

The next time it happened, I stepped out and fired it.

No more "bangity bang bang."

If you want to work mobile, a halo is good.

Find an old handbook for instructions to build one.

Well said

Count me in with the "QRP is NOT recommended" for a first rig.

The cold reality is that most of the time, you will find it quite challenging to make contacts and it is not easy to have a longer QSO with QRP.
You need to get on the air and have some QSO's to get a feel of the hobby and what happens. HARD to do with QRP, especially on the
lower bands and in summer when the QRN level is higher, even on the upper bands noise levels come up in the summer.

Hint:  try to put up the best and highest antenna you reasonably can.

There are a LOT of good, reliable, and fully functional "older" rigs out there. You can get a 100 W tranceiver for a pretty reasonable amount; well worth the effort and cost.

A cold fact is that, especially on voice modes, most hams don't want to try to pull some weak signal out of the noise; it is just not fun nor pleasant to listen to.
Remember; often the QRP operator is asking the other station to listen to a signal that is hard to copy.....that is not most people's definition of fun. Translation: your
popularity on the band WILL be related to your signal strength. With a QRP only station, you are going to spend a LOT of time on the radio NOT working other stations.

QRP is fun and a challenge, but is not the way to start out.  QRP is best for CW or digital modes.

 no
7  eHam Forums / Elmers / RE: when i pass my ticket on: February 10, 2013, 03:10:19 PM
As a novice my first rig was a Heathkit HW8.

I do not recomend QRP as a first rig.

My first antenna was an inverted V made out of 2 rolls of Radio Shack antenna wire.

My second rig was a Heathkit HW 101.

I built both.

Get an older rig with out all the menus and learn to operate.

An Atlas 210X with the DD6c readout and station consol with the vox unit.

The only change is to realign the 10 meter VFO to cover the CW portion of the band.

I wrote up this procedure in the community section of eHam.

No menues to fool with.

CHP:  Perfect! Grin

Thankyou

My Elmer WB4LPX (sk) taught me proper procedure.

I usually ask "Is the frequency in use?"

I wait a few seconds and ask "Is the frequency in use? This is WD4CHP, Whiskey Delta 4 Charley Hotel Papa, WD4CHP"

If there is no response then I go ahead a call CQ.

I gave fair warning.
11  eHam Forums / Misc / RE: External VFO for Kenwood TS130-what's it good for? on: December 10, 2012, 06:08:37 AM
I used to have a Tempo 1 with a bad drift problem.

By using the external VFO the problem was solved.
12  eHam Forums / Elmers / RE: Power On-Off at Rig or at Power Supply? on: November 11, 2012, 05:59:37 AM
I keep my power supply off when not in use.

This keeps my power consumption down as the supply uses power even when nothing is being used.

(This also applies to wallwarts)

I turn the supply on and wait a couple of minutes for it to stabilize then turn the rig on.

I turn the rig off first then the power supply.

Go Green!
13  eHam Forums / Elmers / RE: HTX-242 replacement microphone on: August 22, 2012, 05:57:33 AM
The mic cord on my 242 fell apart from the heat in the truck.

I called Radio Shack for the replacement.

They didn't know who manufactured the radio and a replacements are not available.

The mic was still good so I bought a new cord and installed it with a new RJ45.

I could reuse the strain relief at the mic and used heat shrink at the RJ45.

By leaving about an inch of the cord on the old RJ45 you can match the colors for the new cord.

The only problem was the shield for the audio. A light tinning helped.

I had the crimping tool as I worked in telecommunications for a while.

I hope this helps.

14  eHam Forums / Misc / RE: New HF rig for a new Ham on: May 12, 2012, 01:24:32 PM
I would suggest that a new ham get a basic transeiver for the first rig.

That way he could master the operation.

Once he gets his feet wet then he can get the rig that will do what he wants it to do.

I started with a HW8 then a HW101. A couple of Atlases.

I now use an Icom IC 706MK2G mobile and an Icom IC 746 PRO at home and I still haven't mastered all the menus.
15  eHam Forums / Computers And Software / RE: HRD disconnects after a while on: April 24, 2012, 05:40:00 AM
I had the "prolific" problem with my 2 Vista laptops.

They (I went through 3 of the Chinese knockoffs) worked with my XP machine.

I went to Amazon and searched for FTDI. I bought one for about $30.

Problem fixed!
