46  eHam Forums / Elmers / RE: Icom or Kenwood HF radio? on: April 08, 2011, 01:56:57 PM
Personally I went with Icom.

Why??

I had a bad experience with Kenwood. But that is beside the point.

Years ago in Denver there was an electronics store that had a radio room. If you had a license, you could try out the radios.

Unfortunately I don't know of any today that offers that service.
47  eHam Forums / Computers And Software / HRD and Vista Home premium on: March 23, 2011, 03:42:26 PM
I finally found a driver for the prolific chip set for the vista OS.

I am using Vista home premium (same problem with Vista Ultimate but that computer bit the dust)

My problem is when I try to run HRD V4 or V5, I get a blue screen error.

Here is the Technical information:

*** STOP: 0x00000100 (0x00000004, 0x8062E3D2, 0x00000000,0x87cdce10)

*** wdf01000.sys - Address 8062E3D2 base at 806D000, DateStamp 47919015

Any help is appreciated.

This is the pdf file for the rm-35m-bb.

The battery backup part of the schematic should be similar.

Reference it to the schematic for the RS-20a

Does your radio have a monitor function?

If so, you could tap off the external speaker or headphones circuit.

My IC-746 Pro has that function but I haven't tried it yet.
50  eHam Forums / Elmers / RE: Saying "over" CONSTANTLY! on: March 23, 2011, 06:10:45 AM
When phone patchs were run for service men to their families, the term "over" was used to indicate to the radio operator to change from recieve to transmit and vice versa.

For those that don't know or don't remember, only one person could talk at a time on a phone patch.
51  eHam Forums / Misc / RE: 7.175 foreign broadcast on: March 15, 2011, 04:10:31 PM
Just for " Grin " a coordinated conspiracy could be organized for all hams call cq on 7.175 when propagation is highest in their area.

Not that I condone it, BUT it is an idea.  Cheesy

53  eHam Forums / Company Reviews / RE: AES is Terrible when compared to HRO on: March 09, 2011, 06:19:54 PM
I have always had excellent transactions with AES.

I get next day delivery for anything I order.

For the big items, I go to Orlando just to talk with them.

In all the years I have dealt with them, I have had no complaints.

No icon for it but "thumbs up."
54  eHam Forums / Site Talk / RE: ACNE ADVERTISEMENTS??? on: March 09, 2011, 06:02:53 PM
It seems to me that an acne ad on eHam is a waste of money as the average age of hams is well past the acne problem!! Wink

In "Run Silent, Run Deep" CW was in the background. It was hard to copy as the CW tone varied and I can't concentrate that well.

Staring Clark Gable and Burt Lancaster.

I forgot to add batteries left in radios, flashlights, toys, etc.
58  eHam Forums / Misc / battery cleaner on: January 27, 2011, 02:47:56 PM
I found that No. 77 Black Powder Solvent made by Birchwood Casey will clean the residue left by a leaking battery.

It is water based and will not attack the plastic.

Just a couple of drops on a Q-Tip will do it without rubbing.

I have had it for a few years. At that time a 16 fl oz bottle cost $6.46.

You may want go to a tool rental store.

They can suggest what to use and you won't have to buy an expensive tool that you might not use again.
60  eHam Forums / Clubs / RE: Is ARRL Life Membership Worth It? on: November 22, 2010, 05:05:27 AM
When I was still working and could afford it, I got life memberships in all the organizations I belonged to that offered it.

Now that I am retired and on a limited income, I am glad I do not have to worry about where I can scrape up the yearly dues.

Plan ahead for your retirement.
