31  eHam Forums / Stolen Gear / RE: RETURNED Stolen Gear! True Story! on: March 20, 2010, 09:01:28 PM
Interesting how life has changed since this thread began.
1) Does anyone carry a "Handitalkie" any more?
2) No one looks for a phone -- it's in your pocket -- unless you are a wife, and then "you're always looking for your phone."
32  eHam Forums / Antennas and Towers and more / RE: Rotator not rotating on: February 21, 2010, 05:26:17 PM
Before coming down from the tower with the rotor -- try to see that the antenna will turn freely -- if you are using a thrust bearing, it could be hung up.
33  eHam Forums / Amplifiers / RE: Choosing Amplifier for RTTY Contesting on: February 18, 2010, 06:06:51 PM
RE:  Had to turn it up to 600 watts.  Yeah, I noticed.  That's one of the problems of the mode.  Everyone is on a very narrow spectrum and when one dude turns it on to capture the DX it captures my receiver.
Back in the day with the old "Green Keys" you really needed the power to make dependable RTTY contacts.  The software defined stuff today is actually amazing.
34  eHam Forums / Amplifiers / RE: Choosing Amplifier for RTTY Contesting on: February 07, 2010, 06:44:24 PM
I'd look not only at tubes used but the power supply department.  My Henry 2K-4 appears to run about as cool at 1 KW RTTY as on SSB at full tilt, but I haven't used it on RTTY a lot.   I prefer PSK 31 at 30 watts.
35  eHam Forums / Amplifiers / RE: 160m into Henry 2k-4 and other improvements on: January 03, 2010, 04:48:29 PM
As the owner of a 2k-4, the idea of butchering it to add 160 makes me wince.  I have no idea of the electrical complexities involved, but the 2k-4 (at least my 2k-4A) does have bandswitch positions for both 75 and 80. I'm doubting that many of the 160 people do a lot of high power 80 meter operation, so this should free up a position for the 160 meter stuff.

Sounds like a chore, though.
36  eHam Forums / Boat Anchors / Using a Heathkit HP23 with a collins 32s1 and KWM2 on: November 23, 2009, 06:27:34 PM
I believe that the high voltage is somewhat lower on the 23 than the standard Collins supply.   I'm lookng for one too, since it pains me to spend 250-300 for the Collins supply.

Actually used the power supply from my old Heath Apache for many years to power my 32S-1, and it worked very well.
37  eHam Forums / Boat Anchors / FT 747 backup battery on: October 02, 2009, 10:49:32 AM
Has anyone had experience replacing the backup battery in the 747?  I recently acquired this transceiver and it works fine, but apparently the battery is done.

I've checked the little switch underneath, and it appears to be in the "on" position.
38  eHam Forums / Antennas and Towers and more / Hy-Gain 4 element Yagi Identification on: March 31, 2009, 04:07:38 PM
If it is Hy-Gain, you should be able to find the part number on some of the parts -- the element support clamps should have a part number on them, for example.

Many Hy-Gain antennas use the same parts, but you should be able to take a look at what you have and compare it to the parts list on the Hy-Gain antennas and identify what you have it is Hy-Gain.

You can find the parts list, manual, and ordering information for missing parts on the Hy-Gain site.

39  eHam Forums / Amplifiers / What to do with my Alpha 87A? on: January 20, 2009, 10:35:50 AM
$2000 to repair a ham radio amp -- Wow!!  I think that I can remember when you could buy a pretty good amp for $2,000.
40  eHam Forums / Amplifiers / Problem with a Heathkit SB200 on: January 15, 2009, 10:48:17 AM
I'm assuming that you have made the proper connections to the amplifier from your exciter to both supply drive through the RF Connection and Transmit/Receive functionality.

If you are using a newer transceiver, you must be careful that the voltage levels present on the T/R switch that it doesn't damage your transceiver.
41  eHam Forums / Amplifiers / Heathkit SB-1000 AC pulg for 220 on: January 01, 2009, 05:26:26 PM
Each amperage rating has a different plug socket configuration.  It's a way of preventing the user from plugging in a higher amperage/lower amperage device into a line not rated for it.

Rating the line and the associated breaker with the device provides protection for the device.  For example, if you hook the amp to a 50 amp circuit, the breaker won't activate until you have a 50 amp fault.

Thanks guys -- won't worry about it.

44  eHam Forums / Amplifiers / Henry 2KA Soft Start on: September 30, 2008, 10:48:05 AM
I have a Henry 2K-4A.  This has a choke input with a big Oil Filled Cap.  Should I be looking at a soft start kit for this amp?
45  eHam Forums / Amplifiers / Henry 2 K 4 on: January 03, 2008, 10:31:31 AM
I'll try that, however, it will blow a piece of paper slightly upward when placed over the outside enclosure.

It operates great in all respects -- The blower is nice, since it is very quiet, even compared with the one on my TS 2000.  I had heard so many negative comments about the Henry blowers that I was concerned.

I took a look at it when I first got it to see if I could lubricate it, but the motor is toward the front of the power supply enclosure, and it would have required removing the blower to check.  It seemed to run smoothly, as I tested it separately, but I couldn't ascertain if it was reaching its full speed.

I'm hoping that it's working all right.  I plan to get a muffin fan to put on the top to draw additional air flow under severe conditions.

Thanks for the help.

Phil
