eHam Forums / Boat Anchors / RE: Changing power cord on Hallicrafters S-38

Yes, I am aware that the Hallicrafters S-38 is an AC/DC radio without a transformer and that is why I posted my question. It does have a metal cabinet and does use rubber grommets to isolate the metal chassis from the metal cabinet. That is the reason for the question about adding the neutral green wire from a three wire power cord to the metal cabinet to keep it neutral in case there is a leakage. I am also going to use an isolation transformer. Have also considered using an old line cord from a hair dryer instead of a three wire since the hair dryer cords are terminated with a GFI plug. I was just checking for suggestions for different options. TNX and 73, Ray AK4RL

eHam Forums / Boat Anchors / Changing power cord on Hallicrafters S-38

I am in the process of refurbishing a nice Hallicrafters S-38 (six tube) and have run into conflicting posts on the web concerning changing the power cord on the radio. All of the postings mention changing the way the original on/off switch is hooked up to avoid having a "hot" chassis and using a polarized plug. The conflicting posts concern rather or not to use a three wire cord and tying the neutral green wire to the cabinet. Some posts do recommend doing this and some posts advise against doing it saying it would create a shock hazard because that would tie the cabinet into the ground system of everything in the house. I would appreciate some of you experienced rebuilders out their giving me your advice. TNX and 73, Ray AK4RL

I do not know what is wrong with the people at Inrad Filters but I cannot get them to answer the phone, return a phone call or answer an email. Can anyone help me with two questions. The first is how many pins does the Inrad Filter # 110 have. I found the filter that I had pulled from my Icom 746 (non-Pro) when I sold it serveral years ago. The filter has two pins, one at each end on the same side with a small bolt and nut in the center between the two pins. On the opposite side from the two pins is a solder spot across from the small bolt. No pin, just a solder spot. Is this the proper amount of pins for this filter?
My second question is about their filter for the Kenwood TS-2000. It states that the filter must be wired in, not dropped in. Is this a difficult filter to install. My old 70 year old arthritic hands cannot do much with small solder jobs now. Has anyone reading this installed this filter and how difficult is it? Also does it improve the reception and selectivity of the Kenwood TS-2000?

Have you considered that the adapter may be good and that it is the version of your Yaesu that might be the problem? There are at least three different pin configurations of the Yaesu microphone connector. I also thought I had a bad adapter and it turned out it was my Yaesu that had the problem by not being standard over the years. Read all ads carefully and know what you really need and then ask questions before buying. 73, Ray AK4RL

eHam Forums / Elmers / Yaesu FT-736R Mic Not Keying
|
on: June 19, 2011, 12:12:01 AM

I recently acquired a nice looking Yaesu FT-736R that was sold as a working radio (not from ebay). He kept his Heil mic and cord and did not have the original mic. Since I have always been an Icom and Kenwood fan, I did not have any Yaesu mics around. I bought an adapter cable for Kenwood 8 pin round to Yaesu 8 pin round and hooked it up and got nothing. If you press the MOX button, the radio keys and if you short pin 6 (PTT) to ground the radio keys. I figured bad adapter so I bought a MH-31 Yaesu mic and still the radio will not key. I then did a total reset but no change. Any suggestions as to what I should check now? Any strange combination of buttons on the FT-736R that I must punch? Would appreciate your help. I would like to use two hamsticks as a dipole for multi-band use. Which hamstick should I use, the 10 meter or the 75 meter? I know I will have to use a tuner for multi-band. Thanks, Ray
