eHam Forums / Antenna Restrictions / more on lightning arrestor & other antenna issues !

Hi all.
I have these issues with my antenna:
My antenna is on top of a three storey building. I have a 1000 liters water storage tank, connected to the house water supply, by plastic pipes and is always full. Can I use it as an RF ground ?
I will be installing a remote auto atu. I am afraid that it will not survive long, as my Qth is prone to thunderstorms and lightning in winter. A knife switch is fine to ground the antenna, but it is not practical for me to go up and down frequently to the rooftop. A remote knife switch does not exists, and I am afraid to fit an RF relay.
A gas filled arrestor will be the ultimate solution, but they are only available for 50 ohms coax ! Cannot be used on open feeders. A spark gap will only work at a relatively high voltage.
Any comments please ?
Thnaks
Paul

Hi all.
I live in a qth which is very prone to thunderstorms in winter.
Which are the best arrestors, spark gap or gas filled ? If a gas filled flashes, does it need to be replaced ?
Which type is ideal for a remote atu ?

What I mean is on the web, not on air. On air is a different story. We are chased as dx. That is ok And I did not mean all !!, but most. Only today , I had a very detailed technical report from Rick, KK7B, about my experiments on how to eliminate AM breaktrough in DC receivers, like the R2pro, Tayloe, etc. which is a plague here in Europe. But I am still wating for a reply from W6JL, who never showed up ! This just one example in a day's work. I am a pensioner and a cancer survivor, and spend most of my time homebrewing and experimenting, rather than operating. When I pose a question to a dx ham, he promptly answers, not the same for UK and US !!!!
Take for example, the GQRP club. Rev Dobbs is very understanding and helpful, with no predjudice. But, Mr Fishpool, the moderatyor of the forum, is very predjudice. He runs the forum as a British Admiral, the glory of the Long Gone British Empire !!!. UK and US hams can say antything, gfreely, but me, no.
Sorry guys, but my predjidice is proving right !!

I often communicate with fellow amateurs around the world, expressing my views and exchanging information on technical matters. Occasionally, I do not expose my call sign immediately, but when I do, most radio amateurs ignore me! And never reply back, or do not reply at all. The web is almost dominated by US and UK fora and discussion groups and they give the impression that they are supreme, or infallible! A well known qrp club discriminates between dx and US & UK amateurs. This is especially true on their discussion group, where UK and US amateurs can express their views freely, with very little, or no moderation, as against the opposite, with DX amateurs.

I have recently noticed that when making orders by Paypal, the amount of postage paid is never printed on the received parcel/packet !! This is a cause of concern, because a seller can abuse and charge any amount for shipping. I am from Malta, Europe, and the variations in postage paid by sellers in US, for the same kind of packet/parcel/carton is remarkable. Have a look at Ebay ! Some, if not all sellers of small, almost wietghless components charge astronomically high shipping charges. I have filed a complaint to Paypal, and they say that it is their standard procedure, not to print shipping charges on parcels/packets/cartons !!!!!!

I am experimenting with Tayloe switching front end. I have an FST3253 switching mixer, fed from 74ac74 divider and an SI570, with a FIN1002, controlled by an MC9SQ8QG8 and 24AA32 controller. An LT6231 op amp amplifies the whole thing. The set works excellent, but I have noticed a 1Khz backround tone, present on alll bands and frequencies, it is static, does not change in the frequency or level. Any ideas how to eliminte please ! The whole project is well decoupled. Paul
